Nah, you're right. Avi (dude with the beard) was with them until 2017 when he needed to step away because the touring schedule was really rough, especially since his mother was very ill. As others have said, he gave them plenty of warning and helped them find Matt, the new bass. I love Matt, but Avi is just unreal. He's got a bass that can shake your soul, I think due to his training in opera, which he majored in in college. The man's been known to blow out sound systems at venues they toured in.

I still hate that he had to leave. His voice what I have always aspired to get to (I was a third bass before disability took away my ability to sing (I get horrible headaches when I try to sing)). I never could get anything as close to as resonant as his deep notes.

How they met: Scott and Mitch had been friends since grade school. During high school they met, and befriended Kirsten. The three of them, together known as The Trio, started making music together shortly after meeting, and haven't stopped since. Avi, the gentleman with the beard and the hat who, you were correct again, wasn't in Sound of Silence, having left the group for personal reasons a few years prior, they met through some friends. Avi had a reputation, according to Scott, as an amazing bass. Kevin, their beat boxer, they found through a KZread video which had gotten about 1000 views by the time they saw it. The reason Scott, Mitch, and Kirsten wanted to find two more members for their group in the first place was so they could enter the competition the Sing Off, for which they needed a minimum of 5 members. But, as it turned out, they had found lightning in a bottle with the other two members of the group. They entered the Sing Off and won their season, season 3. One of the prizes for winning was a recording contract with Sony. They recorded their first album...and Sony promptly dropped them. The sales for their first album was nothing Sony was used to with other artists they had contracts with, so they figured Pentatonix would never amount to much, as far as record sales went. They were a novelty act, nothing more, as far as Sony could see. So, Pentatonix did what anyone would do in that situation. They gave up. I'm kidding, of course. I don't think any member of that group would know HOW to give up. They took to KZread and started putting out covers of EVERYTHING. They gained a following on just about every social media platform you could think of. They did shows everywhere. Anything to keep their dream of making music together alive. And, as they gained that following and did those shows, they made contacts. One of them was a young man they had gone to college with. He's the one who edits their videos. It was he who edited their Daft Punk medley video, which they made in Kevin and Avi's, who had an apartment together, kitchen closet for around $400. And, won them their first Grammy Award. All while still independent. It wasn't long after that the rest of the music industry started taking them seriously. They were signed by a subsidiary of Sony, this time to a much better contract than they were the first time, and started doing tours, domestic tours but tours nonetheless. The rest, as they say, is history. Sorry this was so long, but I thought it was information you might like to have. I truly appreciated the history! Btw, I believe! I LOVE Pentatonix 💘. They graduated from the same high school 2 of my stepdaughters went to, in the suburb, here in DFW area. Same town the Dallas Cowboy's stadium is in, FYI. I love extra info on people i admire. Both those daughters have gone very far, both personally and professionally! It, at least, used to be a great school! Been so long ago now, i cannot tell you about the present!

I am a Pentaholic from their first Sing Off Show, and you did a great job of summarizing their journey. Ben Bram has also played a huge role in the music they create as well. They also have released a good amount of original stuff that is fantastic as well. ETA that Avi, the original bass, recommended Matt Salee to be his replacement in the group. Thankfully they took Matt up on it. He is a great member as well.

Scott and Kirstie met in high school but Mitch met Kirstie when they were about 8 in musical theater, like he did with Scott.

For me, the sign of a true artist is the ability to make people feel things they don't expect. Pentatonix is able to do that and I love it.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Daft Punk Medley are both a must! Another favorite of mine is their cover of Gold, but I highly, highly recommend you watch Kiiara's original first if you're unfamiliar with the song, that way you can see how she handles the chorus versus how Mitch handles it. Fair warning, it gets stuck in my head lol.

To let you know this came out a while ago. She had blond hair for a while but died it. The guy you were confused about he left a few years ago to move on with his music career. Now there is they "new guy" that's the base. Forgot his name, think Matt. And the blond guy, Mitch with the hat, and the women, they new each other sense high school. Other two good friends and singing partners. 😁

You spoke of a record label being amazed by them. LOL. Forgive me if I'm repeating any previous comments (I didn't read all of the comments on the board), they won a recording contract when the won the SingOff reality competition. The label then cancelled the contract very soon after they moved out to LA because they didn't think acapella music would be 'sellable' and appeal to the masses. So Pentatonix stuck it out, made their own videos and posted them on KZread to build a fan base, and were picked up about a year later by another label. They worked so hard those first few years and ever since, they've maintained the work ethic, doing anything to get their name out there, get their music heard, and just kept it going. Kudos to Pentatonix for doing the work and sticking with it!

Welcome to the ranks of the "Mitch" slapped, the extremes from Avi to Mitch is indeed magical.

They were on The Sing Off, which was an a cappella competition show. They won season 3 (2011) and got a record deal from Sony/Epic as a result. Unfortunately, Epic dropped them only a few days later because they didn't think an a cappella group was marketable. They started producing their own songs and videos, then got re-signed to Sony about eight months later. They released three EPs on the small Sony-owned Madison Gate label, then their Daft Punk medley went super-viral and won a Grammy, so they were bumped up to the major Sony/RCA label...and the rest is history. Scott (tall blonde baritone), Kirstie (the only female member) and Mitch (amazing high contra-tenor) are life-long friends who grew up together in Arlington, Texas, are the very best of friends, and have been singing together since they were children. They formed an a cappella group called The Trio in high school. Scott got them the audition for The Sing Off a year after he and Kirstie graduated from high school (Mitch was still in high school at the time), but they found out they needed at least five members to audition. Bass singer Avi was brought in thru a mutual friend and they found beatboxer Kevin thru a viral video on his KZread channel where he was "cello-boxing" (playing cello and beatboxing at the same time). They've only had one member change. Avi left in 2017 for personal reasons (he has since embarked on an amazing solo career) and Matt, who was in the Sound of Silence video, joined in early 2018. Mitch and Kirstie are chameleons who change their looks constantly, but it's always them. On tour, Kirstie wears wigs every night, so she literally has a different hair color for every show! Sometimes she wears the wigs in videos too, so it's hard to tell if she's in a wig or has colored her hair again. Her natural hair color is black, but she's also known to color it brown, blonde or red from time to time. Mitch lost a lot of weight at one point and also changes hairstyles a lot too, having gone from short to long to mullet to bald on several occasions! The tenth anniversary of the actual formation of Pentatonix is coming up in just a few weeks.

Great reaction. The "perfect match" was born not found. The three main singers, Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were born in Arlington Texas with in 11 months of each other. They became friends at a young age and were in Choir and Community Theater together. Kevin and Avi were added so they could compete on "The Sing Off". So it was ordained that Pentatonix would come into existence and change a Capella forever. Thank you for your very enjoyable videos.

So much about the group seems meant to be. I loved hearing that Matt was in an a capella group in High School that got to see Pentatonix in concert not knowing he would on day be a part of the group he so admired. He said he feels it was God-ordained. They all still seem so happy and they treat Matt like a little brother.

Thank you for the reaction. Pentatonix won Season 3 of the TV show The Sing Off in 2011. Later this year will be their 10-year anniversary. Avi, the original bass, left the band in 2017 for family and personal reasons. Matt has been their bass since late 2017. That is the only member change. Matt was in The Sound Of Silence video that you saw.

Mitch, Kirsten and Scott have been a trio since high school. They found Avi, and Kevin just before Sing Off. Avi left the group last year. His mom was ill and he wanted to be with her and do some new things. He helped them find his replacement, Matt. Check out Amazing Grace. It will blow your mind.

The bass in this video is Avi Kaplan founding member, left the group in 2017 on good terms helped them find Matt his replacement. @@guinkoo Mary Did You Know was written by Mark Lowry, who is a Christian comedian and was also a member of the Gaither Vocal Band.

Scott and Mitch have known each other since they were 10. Kirsty joined them in high school where they became a trio. When they auditioned for the Sing Off they were told they needed at least 5 members. A friend of a friend introduced them to Avi, then they heard of Kevin, he was also doing you tube videos and he joined them.

Actually it was Mitch and Kirsty who met at 10 and found Scot later in high school. But, Scot was actually in a syndicated singing competition show when he was 10 years old.

They were on the acapella competition show on NBC 's The Sing Off, Season 3. The band/group is celebrating their 10th year together. The band has only 1 member change, Avi Kaplan (beard), he left the band in 2017 for personal reasons, it was amicable, and he helped them to find Matt.

Mitch, Kirstie, and Scott all grew up together in Texas. They found Kevin on one of his own KZread videos. They later found Avi through a friend. Avi left later on to do his own thing but helped them find Matt who is the new bass.

That bass is Avi Kaplan, he left the group and went solo. He helped find Matt, his replacement. Avi was an original member when they won the 'Sing Off'.

Not sure about this. This has NEVER been confirmed. The more research I've been doing, the more it seems like an urban myth. Cohen was very ill when the PTX version was released and he passed away within a few days. It seems highly unlikely to me that he ever even heard their version. I'd like to think he would have been proud of it, though.

I know the line that got you: 7:10 "It's not a cry that you hear at night, it's not someone who's seen the light, it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah." That line is talking to directly to the religious seekers, doubters, wash-outs, what have you--that is *your* hallelujah. Leonard Cohen really hit out of the park with that lyric. Mixing the biblical references of failure (David pleasing the Lord, but then seeing Bathsheba on the roof, Samson letting Delilah cut his hair) with the contemporary reality of alienation and doubt--what a perceptive and profound recipe for our time. When that message gets delivered in this stunning wrapper--it's going to get to a lot of people. I, for one, cannot get enough of this song--this version. It's redemptive.

The TV appearance on The Sing-Off is what brought them together. (Not AGT.) If you want to see how good they were back then, their Sing-Off videos are still around. In particular, the "Let's Get It On" video is when they KILLED it. The judges were blown away, and their quick shots of the other competitors let you know that they (the competitors) KNEW they were doomed. As to their origins, three of them (Kirstie, Mitch, Scott) went to the same high school. To qualify for The Sing-Off, they needed two more members, which is when they met Kevin and Avi.

Mitch, Scott & Kirsten all went to school together, they literally grew up with each other, how amazing is that!

For the record it was a-cappella only show and Avi, the baritone You don’t recall, left the group shortly after this song was put out.

We all grow up with different messages given to us but we find our own ways in the end don’t we? Thanks for your authentic reaction.

This moves the spirit of a higher spirit in all of us. I still get chills and cry when I hear the song. No shame in being moved.

Their original music is my favorite. They released a new original album in February of this year.

Paused the video at the moment you were taught there isn't a higher power. YOU are a child of God. The emotion is very real. The tears and whatnot are a sign of that. When you feel something it means something.

First time I heard this I was jumping up n down crying and goosebumps.

God is music, Doll. That's why it hit you right in the feels.

My very favourite songs are those that touch your soul and this is definitely one of them.

I love this version of Hallelujah so much that I watched 40-45 different people (experts, voice coaches, whatever) critique it. Yours is the only one that I subscribed to.

I've listened to it dozens of times now and it still does it to me. Try "Mary Did You Know", "Amazing Grace", "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Shallow", "Run To You", "Say Something" and "Daft Punk" for a start.

Mary, Did You Know and Amazing Grace hit me in the emotions the hardest, but typically it's Kirsten's voice that does it to me.

Mitch is the stand out in this song. What makes his verse so special is the feeling it puts into it and the incredible skill he has, singing off the beat when he sings "It's a cold and broken Hallelujah". Avi does the same to a lesser degree. They both hold the Ha, which syncopates the rest of the word. It is a truly special talent to pull that off just right, especially in a capella close harmony.

Well, the natural progression into the world of Pentatonix now would be "Amazing Grace" and then "Mary did you know".

Scott (the tall blonde man) and Mitch (the man wearing a wide brim hat) met and became friends in elementary school. They met Kirstin in highschool and the three of them sang together all the time. They decided to audition for the TV show "The Sing off" in college but the show required that groups have a minimum of 5 members. Scott was introduced to Avi through a mutual friend and he find Kevin by watching his KZread channel. The 5 of them met and sang together for the first time either the night before or morning of their audition for the show.

They said in an interview that only three of the singers knew each other before they had found out that they needed five people to preform on America's Got Talent. So they had to move fast to find two more people, they met in person the same day they had to preform on stage. All I thought was okay, no pressure.😱

Avi was recommended to the trio when they were preparing to go on the Sing Off. They knew about Kevin because of his cello/beat boxing You Tube videos. They were all together for 6 years, when Avi decided he wanted to leave. But he helped them find Matt before he left.

Pentatonix won season 3 of "The Sing Off". Avi (the original bass) who is the second soloist in this song was replaced by Matt a few years ago now (2017 I think). Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were friends in highschool. A friend introduced Avi to Scott when the trio of friends were looking for a bass singer to audition for "The Sing Off". A friend showed Scott a KZread video of Kevin beatboxing and playing the cello at the same time and Scott knew that he was perfect for the new group they formed for the Sing Off audition.

I seen them LIVE... they said " for anyone who thinks this is fake , we want to do something for you" they put down all the mics and performed... Beacon Theater NYC ... IVe been following them since day 1 . They won the first season of the sing off. Mitch Scott and Kirstin are the original members . Kevin, the beatboxers was recruited , but is very much his own entity. does his own music as well.They are all very close, If they didnt win the sing off it would have been over, but they went on to win Grammys . They have a different Bass member now, A lot of people are wowed by Mitch by if you dig a lil .... you can hear, Kirstin and Mitch can both do " whistle notes"

New sub AND hardcore PENTAHOLIC (since their beginning in 2011) here Be aware. Since you’re doing a deep-dive into Pentatonix, their original bass, Avi Kaplan, (second singer here, long hair and beard), left PTX at the end of 2017. The palace they keep is grueling (to say the least), and Avi’s Mom was ill. It was an amicable parting, and Avi helped PTX find their new bass, Matt Sallee. So videos after the end of 2017 have Matt singing bass. Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) and Mitch change their looks a lot-A LOT-but the only change in personnel was when Avi left and Matt joined the group.

They were on Season 3 of the Sing-Off (2011). That's where Pentatonix began. The tall blond, Scott, Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty), and Mitch (hat guy), have known each other and sang together for years in school. Avi (original bass until 2017) and Kevin joined them in 2011 (first episode of the Sing-off that they are in, explains all of that). If you don't watch any other episode of the sing-off, season 3, you really should watch their first one. Oh, and Matt joined them as bass in late 2017.
