    Your sources are wrong. He never said that. Cohen died like 2 weeks after this song was released and even Scott did an interview and said that they changed the lyrics for the Christmas album and sent it to Cohen for approval and he said “You know, I don’t want to change this poetry I wrote” and obviously they knew he didn’t like it and recorded it again with the original lyrics but deleting the sexual parts (for those who don’t know, the song is about sex and a toxic relationship, not God or religion 🙄) and that’s how they did it. That’s all. HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT COHEN SAYING IT WAS THE BEST COVER. That’s fake news.

    Yes! Scott regularly does that when their bass singer has a solo. Scott can cover a wide range from bass to tenor-ish, though baritone is his home territory. A good example of Scott doing this is their video of "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," in which their new bass Matt (the only personnel change over the years) takes the lead throughout, and the constant close-ups show Scott holding down the bass line.

    Best part about Pentatonix is: It doesn't matter who's lead at the moment - the others give their everything to support that lead. And the second they pass the lead to someone else, they get behind the new lead and don't try to keep the spotlight. The tall guy, young lady, and guy in the hat (aka Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch) also have been friends since childhood. The group, including both Avi and Matt, are as much a family as they are a group.

  • @ladrac198
    @ladrac1983 жыл бұрын

    An introduction to Pentatonix for you: Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which... Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing opera trained bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt. Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work) Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a tenor, and has a purely angelic voice. He also has an amazing range, I've heard 5 octaves before. Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously. Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on KZread. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo. Yes they do sound the same live, and yes it is all acapella. They never use instruments except for the occasional use of a cello when they feel it enhances the song (like their covers of Radioactive, Say Something, and Perfect). They have a rule that if they can't do it live they can't release it. I recommend all 3 songs above, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, and anything else you want to hear! Their Grammy winners are all insanely good. I also recommend any of their original songs like Sing, Be My Eyes, Happy Now, The Lucky Ones, etc. Welcome to musical bliss!

    Basically, if you don't see and instrument, it's their voices only. You will occasionally see Lindsey Sterling (violin) guest with them and they just released a new Christmas song 'Thank You' that has Scott playing piano (a first for them) and Kevin on the cello. There are also a few fan vids out there of concerts where the venue (like The Hollywood Bowl) basically required them to use at least parts of an orchestra - but, again, you will see the instruments if they do. I say all this because Avi is not only a fantastic bass, but can also do overtone singing - ie singing two notes at once. He uses it to good effect to create a very electronic synth type sound on some of their songs.

    Scott (tall blond and first singer0 is both tenor and baritone, and easily drops into bass whever Avi (or later Matt) needs to take the lead. One of the most incredible things about PTX is the RANGE of each singer, and how well they can fill in for and work with each other.

    You did see Avi in a Home Free video and he was the bass for Pentatonix. When he sang his solo, Scott (tall blond) took over the bass line. Avi has since left Pentatonix and they have a new bass, Matt. Scott (tall blond) is a baritone with ridiculous range, Avi bass, Kirsten (rhymes with thirstin') is mezzo soprano, Mitch (with the hat) is countertenor, and Kevin the beat boxer also sings tenor. (Who does an awsome job) Scott- blond first singer is a barritone but takes the base when Avi singes solo. Has an amazingly wide range. Kirsten- messo soprano and only woman, always sounds amazing. Mitch- contra tenor in the hat. Has an amazingly high register and can reach really high notes but still sound good in lower register Kevin - black guy who does most of the beatboxing and rythems, sings tenor at times and is an amazing cello player as well. You had the breakdown of the group right. Kevin, the guy hitting his chest and stomping is their beat boxer/percussion and Avi, the one that you thought was the bass really is the usual bass singer. Scott, the one who started the song, takes over the bass when Avi sings lead. Mitch, the guy with the really high voice, is, to me, what allows them to have such a balanced sound. He can sing tenor or all the way up to messo-soprano. He gives the group another voice that can hit the notes that a female soprano would usually sing. Avi is no longer with them, a young man named Matt has taken over his place in the group and he's also hella talented. The one female in the group is Kirsten or Kirstie and she has a very powerful, emotional voice that didn't get to shine as much in this song. They have a rendition of "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" that is gorgeous and one of "The Sound of Music" that is also incredible. Oh, and that's their actual voices. They sound almost the same when they sing live. They really are an incredible group.
