Eminem is a poet. Amazing lyricist! Give him a good honest chance. Dysfunctional relationships, core wounds, generational trauma, addiction, autism, codependency, mental illness, bullying, poverty, the list goes on. But also, hope, strength, and a 12-step program doing its work. Truely amazing storyteller.

About to sound like a ‘back in my day’ type, but this is exactly the authenticity and naked rawness that modern music production strives so hard to remove completely from published works. Uninteresting backing tracks and vocals autotuned to the point of homogenisation will never hit anywhere near as hard as something like this.

Yep, not a lot of music coming out these days does much for me. I grew up in the 70's and early 80's and I think we were spoilt for choice. Then the record label gurus decided to dumb music down and produce what I describe as modern day elevator music or plain garbage where the video clip is more important than the words and music. TBH Kasey Chambers to me was just a pop country artist with a couple hits in the early 2000's but this track woke me up and I have since gone back and listened to a few of her albums. She is very underrated and deserves more accolades and success than she has got.

I first saw Kasey Chambers live in a club auditorium in Canberra. It was before she started her solo career and she was fronting the Dead Ringer Band - comprised of he mum and dad and her brother Nash (Her Dad Bill is a great fan and interpreter of American Roots, traditional and alternative country) They had scheduled a 3rd concert as 2 in that venue had sold out - Mainly because we had been plugging them relentlessly on local community radio. That night a massive storm hit Canberra, roofs came off, cars were blown off the roads, power-lines went down - and I was one of about 35 people who made it to the concert, which went ahead as planned because the Dead Ringers don’t let their fans down. Kasey sang, like a gritty heartbroken angel, with relentless soul, and I sat there with my mouth open most of the time, with tears and laughter - her voice can open you like a can-opener and tip out all the contents. The first review I ever wrote on the internet was about Kasey Chambers. I don’t remember what else I said - But I did say that Kasey is the ONE. She doesn’t know how to hold back. Yes, I’m a fan - and this shows exactly why…

So much raw emotion, and Kasey does that so well. Let's not forget this was a Country Artist's audience watching her rendition of a Rap song - and you could hear a pin drop in the 1st half !

Best reaction. I've watched a lot of others. Some just say they didn't enjoy the first part and that it was really good and surprising once it heated up, but you really got the emotion of it, and explained things about her voice, and how she put everything into the whole song. What Kasey did to this song is just brilliant. She really made it her own, and yes, the lyrics can be heard, so we can see what a great writer Eminem is. Kasey's voice is so beautiful in the beginning and the reactors are blown away by her artistic interpretation but all through the first and second verse, I am just fixated on the thought in the back of my head that says "You don't know what's coming! Thanks for doing this one! Kasey is very under appreciated and needs to be recognised more on an international scale! Kasey is a master of storytelling, conveying lyrics and emotion! She is an icon in the Australian music industry, mostly for country and folk, but has her own style and is never afraid to delve into something outside the box. She is just getting better as she gets older. I really hope that Eminem has seen this and appreciates that his song and lyrics were re-imagined in such a spectacular way. Where else would you see banjo, pedal steel guitar and rock band together? Kasey started her solo commercial career around the same time as Eminem and she was a big fan of his music. Kasey spent lockdown playing around with some of her favourite songs and this version of Lose Yourself is the result. Brilliant! Kasey has spent her whole solo career bucking the constraints of the record companies and always gone her way. She made it to the top in Aussie music anyway with many awards, becoming the youngest ever ARIA Hall of Fame recipient. BTW….how was Lose Yourself for breath and vocal control? Not to mention the awesome arrangement. ❤ Also, that was Kasey’s Dad, Bill, on the steel guitar.

Eminem didn’t do a “cover of this song”. Not trying to sound mean or condescending, but he wrote this song about his life, while filming a movie about himself. And he put just as much pressure on himself to have a song that embodied his life and the story of the movie, as “Rabbit” did to create a future for himself in Eight Mile.

Still, I’ll admit, this is a cool version that she seems to really feel. I just happen to come from the generation of hearing and being inspired/motivated listening to Eminem’s version, so I lean to liking his more, but can’t deny how good hers is. Does remind me of how Marilyn Manson sang and changed the feel of “Sweet Dreams”, originally by the Eurythmics. It just depends on what sort of mood you’re in.

We have been lucky enough to see her twice in very intimate settings with only around 20 people and was there when she sang aint no little girl for one of the first times live, before that album was released. omg, maybe the greatest cover of any song ever. The emotion in her voice is everything, just wow wow wow. You're right, it hits the soul. She must have lived the same life as Em. As you mentioned, it is haunting. I love your take on her voice, but it makes sense. The life she has led can be heard in her voice. That's why she must have had quite the life. This is a once in a lifetime performance, phew!!

Thanks for a great reaction Beth. You can tell the audience are as invested in her performance of this as she is - it is rare to see/hear a live performance like this where the audience is totally silent but it happened here. If not for the music, you could have heard a pin drop!

Interesting to see your reactions.....I've played this over 10 times now, and each has taken me to the edge..... Kasey using all her heart and soul to rip out the cutting words of Eminem's lyrics.....This reaches deep into your emotions, you get more than one shot to feel it! Powerful performance by Kasey and band.

Absolutely adore your research into our Kasey's history. I used to buy fish and chips from Kasey's family shop as a young fella when hunting around Southend, South Australia. She was about 10 years my junior and even then you could tell there was something special about her. The whole of Australia is immensely proud of Kasey and her amazing musical family. That's her dad on the slide guitar. Kasey reached out to the audience and asked them to submit their phone recordings of this performance so this video could be spliced together. Probably my favorite song outside of this is Rattlin' Bones, with (now ex) hubby Shane Nicholson, which was featured in the series Hell On Wheels. One similarity occurs to me. When Trent Reznor saw/heard Johnny Cash's treatment of Hurt, he said "This is no longer my song. It belongs to Johnny." I love Eminem's song, but can't help but believe that Kasey somehow hijacked it. I'd love to know what Eminem thinks of this. I can't count how many times I've watched her video of this song or other reactors. Thanks for reacting.

IMPRESSIVE!!! I enjoyed that MUCH more than I expected!! (Not saying I expected bad. Just didn't have any expectations at all.) Started off so calm and quite and reserved. Ended with such intensity. Was like all this emotion was being held back for so long until eventually the dam burst and it all came pouring out!!

Kasey's own material is outstanding. The Captain album is brilliant. But if you want to be shattered for days, listen to her song Paper Aeroplane. It is the most beautifully crushingly sad song I've ever heard and I'm an old man who is drawn to sad music. It's beyond beyond.

you mentioned the hardships of someone living on a farm in the 1800's. you need to know that kasey's family were shooters that eradicated feral pests on the nullarbor plain, nullarbor means no trees it's a huge unforgiving deserted desert plain. they made a living in winter hunting when it's safe to go into the nullarbor though it's still hot during the day and freezing at night and they sang in clubs during summer for money when it's too hot to be in the nullabor. So the hardships of someone living on a farm in the 1800's may not have felt so hard to kasey at times.

I think the reason this works is that Kasey taps into her fear of failure from her early career . She had trouble getting interest from record companies . Her earliest big hit was Not Pretty Enough about struggling to get noticed in the music industry . But she has been a star in Australia and had a decent following in the US.

Great to see you react to this, hadn't seen/heard her cover before this. My favourite performance of hers! She's amazing in this.. and I'm wanting to watch it a few more times, was just seeing someone else react to it too. Been following her since she first jumped onto our music scene here in Australia.. and I haven't always liked every song she sings but love her voice... and this hits the mark. That poignant element she brings to it at first, then crashing into the reality of how hard life is to be a performer and in that culture...and giving it her all. Eminem's lyrics are great in it.. she just turned it into something else again. WOW!
