Other vocal coaches have made progress understanding how this is produced by watching Floor Jansen's approach to it in the chorus of Nightwish's Yours Is An Empty Hope (Wembley performance). Apparently Floor's method of producing the growl is somewhat obvious when viewed by vocal professionals. Hope this helps.

Tatiana has explained in an interview , how long time it took her to get that growl , training it by screaming in a pillow and how she has to do vocal training about every day to be able to do it , so its not easy and something once you learn it you can do it for rest of your life . Specially when she wanted to sound like a man and not a women doing the growl . Loudwire interview Tatiana Shmayluk kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3am07mSfaXTZpM.html 12 min 38 sec .

IIRC Tatiana has stated that regular belts are actually harder for her voice than the growls: in live versions of this song she often replaces the belt in last chorus with a growl. Women doing growling vocals are not that uncommon these days (Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy is well-known, and for more extreme example there was Som Pluijmers from Cerebral Bore), but Tatiana is still unusual for both extreme effortlesness she moves between cleans, belts and growls, and also her pronunciation in growls is very good. Lots of growlers sound very deep and brutal, but at the cost of not making out any of the lyrics.

The vocal ambush here has made this video a thing, but from a technical standpoint their concert videos such as Perennial live at Wacken, Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne (the latter has more different vocal techniques crammed into a single song than anything I've seen them release, but is one of their most aggressive songs so I can't wholeheartedly recommend it haha), or the one-take vocal performance of Judgement & Punishment (very raw, even has a bit of an oops left in it, and a good mix of singing, belting, and growls) will show off her abilities much better.

  • @chriswalden798

What is this "oops" part you keep mentioning Jeffrey? Are you talking about first set of extreme vocals in the song, 3rd scream in where she sounds like your angry girlfriend? Maybe that was intentional hahaha I've seen/analyzed the performance as much as you have, I think its flawless, as flawless as human being can do. I don't think anyone would ever hear an oops in it, certainly after a first listen.

Want to know a little secret, in truth, it is more of a purr in that it is not that loud, mic and amplification are a big help. Might also be why the cleans sound a bit breathy and airy, she is close to singing in a whisper to not need to adjust that mic gain.

She's using her vestibular folds to make those noises, more commonly referred to as false cords, which sit kinda above the vocal cords. I would try to avoid calling it screamo though. Screamo is a very specific emo subgenre, and most metal heads are a bit tired to get that comparison. The vocal technique she uses actually comes from the death metal scene, and is typically a pitchless scream. It does indeed require a relaxed throat and a lot of breath control and support from your diaphragm. Doing it wrong is certainly very unhealthy, and in the past a lot of vocalists blew out their voice by using the wrong technique.

  • @projectomnia1997

Not only did I love your very genuine, excited reactions, I was also really fascinated by your professional take and analysis. As someone who's married to a professional voice actress, I really enjoyed hearing you explain all the physical/anatomical aspects, that go into shaping sound with your mouth. It's actually the entire body, depending on what you're aiming for. And Tatiana seems to have a ridiculous amount of knowledge, experience, and also instinct as far as that goes. For someone who can't sing AT ALL but is still tremendously fascinated by the human voice, this is such a fascinating topic. Thanks so much for expanding my horizon. This was fun!

She uses her false vocal folds to create the harsh vocals, as opposed to the vocal fry you hear sometimes when she's singing. This leaves her vocal folds free from wear and tear to continue clean singing.

Excellent reaction ty. I watched a lot, and it is the first a vocalcoach comments make me realise that Tatiana's throat seems, in fact, more tense when she use here "normal" voice than when she is growling. Thank you so much.

good reaction thank you! False vocal folds for the WIN!!! several YT peeps have mentioned trying this themselves but no results as of yet. You should definitely check out Jinjer Perennial Live at Wacken open air 2019 as everybody and their brother has suggested.

That is indeed her, and she sounds just as amazing live. If you want to better check out her technique I suggest Judgement & Punishment (one take live). For a live performance I suggest Perennial at Wacken (pronounced Vacken).
