He meant emotionally heavy. The song is not about Paul Gray, their bass player who died, but it kind of emotionally became connected to him. That's why Corey is almost in tears. Great video! Corey is just an incredible talent. Hope to see more of him on the channel! 😃

@@tosuismyu he didn't. Corey wrote it after the breakup/divorce of his ex, but didn't really want the song to "be out there". It was more a way for him to just deal with it at the time, but Paul read it and convinced Corey to record the vocals. Then after Corey left, Paul and Joey put the music on the track.. Corey heard the result the next day and just started crying. But Paul is also the one who convinced Corey to put the song on the album if I remember the interview with Corey correctly.

I knew Corey pretty well back in the 90's. He was a great singer before he became a great 'screamer', although he was rock/metal vocalist back then too. Not saying he was a bad screamer, he just hadn't honed it to slipknot level yet. I think he is just a naturally gifted really good singer and a really cool guy to match. Was always a blast to be around and he lived, sleeped and ate rock & metal. His craft was his entire existence. I've seen people try to call him a fake online. Trust me he's legit.

  • @ProtusMose

Technically he wasn't a 'good' screamer back then. There's a reason he doesn't scream like he did on Iowa any more. It sounds amazing, but It's not sustainable and rips your throat to shreds. It's not healthy. Later on he developed a healthy fry.

Death, the quintessential Death Metal act not to mention a founding father of it, has one of the most sublime instrumental tracks with Voice of the Soul . Corey may be one of the top 5 vocalists around today. He does screaming like few others, has unbelievable control of his distortion (as is plainly evident in this performance), and can rock out with the best of them (as his Stone Sour performances can attest). He may not have the greatest range, or the silkiest tones, or do any one thing the best. But he can do it all as good as the best. The guy is almost unique, especially since Chris Cornell and Chester are gone. Few others besides those two can be as great at multiple styles as Corey is.

How CMFT can sing the way he does in both songs like this and everything he does with slipknot after smoking cigarettes heavily since he was like 11 or something is truly incredible. The lung compactly issue alone is enough to cripple a singer. The man is super human. Cigarettes make you get a great “gravelly” distorted sound but I’m sure you’d agree it’s one of the worst habits for a singer to have, or a human for that matter. Paul convinced him to do it, and the rest is history. It is easily one of the most significant and emotional slipknot songs now, and every fan of corey, knows how much this means to him. Hence his extreme emotion while singing it, whenever he looks up, he's looking to Paul

I love metal music, but more specifically, bands with singers that do a mix of screams and clean vocals. Some of my favs are Howard Jones from Killswitch Engaged, Corey Taylor from Slipknot, the 2 dudes from Our Last Night, and many many more

Screaming seems more strenuous than clean singing. Nobody could scream like a young Corey Taylor. Still listen to that first Slipknot album regularly. What a poet.

That first "oooh ooh", followed by Corey's one, that you commented arround 7:10 minutes, it's from a very talented fan in the audience, it take me some listenings to realize, since his voice is so similar to Corey's voice. Awesome!

the thing about metal singers, especially mixed genre ones, is they can do literally everything vocally, all the voices and tricks get used. rap, yodel, croon, twang, growl, operatic or falsettos

Hi Beth. Great you are more into metal now. You will find most metal fans get into it due to the emotional connection and the subject matter tends to lend itself to it. I got into it after years of singing in a church choir and both music forms still inspire and move me. Snuff I believe was an autobiographical song about Corey's ex wife/girlfriend and so the the emotion is all genuine. If I am wrong, please put me straight on the facts.
