The “cry” you’re talking about is called “quejío” in flamenco culture. It’s one of the most characteristic things of flamenco songs. Camarón de la Isla is one of the greatest cantaores because he has this talent called duende in the culture, so he just can naturally sing and improvise the best bulerias ever😍 Paco de Lucía is as well the greatest at Spanish guitar, when they both come together is magical🤩 thank you for checking it out!!

Hello from Andalusia !!!! you have perfectly captured the essence of flamenco. Flamenco is a cry, a cry torn against injustice or against a particularly painful situation in life. But it is also a song to love, to the memory of our best stages in life, to joys and friendship. Flamenco is a way of expressing feelings directly with the heart.

We will have to wait more years to know Rosalía’s development. We can’t compare them yet and we shouldn’t compare them in the future. Rosalía is a great musician, we just have to see her evolution. Hating her instead of supporting an artist who creates her own music (which aren’t many these days) doesn’t makes you having a better taste for music nor cooler/alternative . If you listen to her albums you’ll know her music is good, better than the 90% of the music on the radio.

@@zzzzn1011 I love Rosalía, I think she's one of the greatest things that has happened to modern music nowadays, but in my personal opinion, I think this goes beyond the music, it's more about the feeling, and don't get me wrong, if you listen to Los Angeles, the first album of Rosalía, which is entirely made of flamenco covers, you can definitely see that she has the potential, but she chose to do this more trap-ish sound, which again, totally cool, I love it, but the feeling behind their interpretation is very very different.

Flamenco is an art. Camarón and Paco had deep admiration for each other. They perfectly complemented each other. We are talking about the greatest flamenco guitar player of all time, Paco de Lucía, and the most famous flamenco singer, Camarón de la Isla, together. I'm not into this style, I'm into heavy metal, but these people are gods and myths in Spain. Even a person who never heard this before can realize the greatness and emotion this performance shows. Music is an universal language. The 'cry' is called 'quejío' it comes from 'quejido' that means lament or something similar.

There's only one word you need to know here: it's duende. This is pure traditional flamenco. There's no 'vocal training', they're learning from as soon as they can speak. What you're hearing is a very unique vocal sound/style that is not limited to Cameron, but rather part of the system/tradition. Also, it's pronounced 'Is-la'. :) You should also check out Jose Merce, Rancapino Chico(Hijo), and El Torta(to name a few)

Agreed, this is what I find frustrating about this video too, the conflation of what's mostly traditional flamenco with Camaron's style. You simply cannot make a meaningful video about Camaron in a vacuum, there's too much context you are going to miss. I've seen also in people reacting to Paco playing and it drives me nuts, they come into the videos knowing nothing and come out thinking Paco was amazing because he used tremeolos, picado or rasgueados.

I just want to praise what you did here. Coming from an intellectual and collected British culture as it is. How bold of you (I mean this in the best way) is to dive in gipsy-flamenco art. Even for the average Spaniard, flamenco can come across as challenging to "understand", (just because there's nothing to understand, it's all feeling.) You are so on point appreciating the "cry" that often times can come across as disturbing (It is soooo easy to be an annoying flamenco singer BTW, its like walking on a thigh rope)- You are far from being disrespectful, flamenco singers actually aim for the "cringe" or "quejío" (for them is a good thing because their craft is to turn pain into something sublime... Isn't it something fascinating? That being said, you helped me to appreciate how restrained and nuanced this piece is, making the feelings palette and tonality go across the board. (Bulería is the jolliest tempo of flamenco mixed here with a sad song.) Anyway, flamenco is so complex and takes guts (pun intended) to dare scratching its surface. In a nutshell: OLE for you!
