ABOUT…
I am Rebecca and I am one heck of a passionate vocal coach/singer/songwriter/impressionist/health/fitness/self- improvement/anything that makes me smile!! I love anything vocal/singing related and geek out on it every day. I want to motivate and inspire others to follow their dreams…corny? Well maybe but it’s true. So what’s motivating me?? I had a huge tumour removed summer 2017 and my ovaries and fallopian tubes. The tumour was the size of a 20 week baby!! However, despite not being able to walk for a couple of weeks, and feeling generally awful…. It has made me create and do what I love! It wasn’t an easy time but I won’t let fear dictate my life. I didn’t think ‘why me’, there are plenty of horrific issues people have to deal with…it’s not always smooth sailing. It’s true when you hear, ‘Life is short’, the crazy thing is, I am glad it happened…I appreciate life even more and practice gratitude everyday…It’s so easy to get caught up with the little things…and I do sometimes, but look at the bigger picture, will it matter in a year or two…?
Also thank you for all your support. It means a lot.
Subscribe to Rebecca Vocal Athlete to get inspired by new videos!
Have a great day!!

Steve Perry was interviewed when "Don't Stop Believing" was inducted into the Library of Congress fairly recently. He said something like it was the biggest highlight of his career. He's a very humble, genuine, talented man. You should also go look up the videos of him singing & stirring up the crowd at the Giants games singing this song. He's in full on party mode enjoying his favorite team. Great personality. Hard not to love him.

His voice is so powerful that it seems like he is effortlessly yelling the song. Most non-musicians don't realize that what they (the crowd) hear out front is not what musicians hear out of their vocals on stage (which makes it more amazing that he can pull of a studio quality recording LIVE.) Stage Monitor speakers (what the musicians hear) typically a dry mix without effects, no reverb, echo, etc. to combat feedback issues? and also balance of vocals, back up vocals, can seem OUT of balance and instruments too loud, not loud enough, BUT a good sound man makes it all sound good out front where it counts. Have played in situations where I could barely hear my own instrument/voice. Side note: It was rumored back in the day that his voice was so strong that it was hard on microphones. I would like to believe that rumor.

"After the Fall" is the one that amazes me most. Perry's voice transcends human ability on that song. One of the few nice things about being older (I'm in my early 50's now) is that I was around back when these songs first came out. I was already a fanatic music LOVER even as a kid when Journey peaked. When these songs were initially released and everyone was hearing them for the first time it was unlike anything happening today. Somehow even back then we knew we were hearing what would be timeless classics. Bands and music were a big deal back then and everyone was talking about the incredible stuff coming out. The emphasis was on the quality of the music not how someone looked or danced or what their latest publicity stunt was…like in today's music scene. Young people today are so unfortunate. They didn't get to grow up with a music scene like we Gen-X'ers did. The only bad thing about that time was we mostly listened to it on crappy cassette or 8-track tapes on equally crappy stereo systems. So the advent to modern ultra-high definition formats breathed new life into these classics and we get to really hear them again for the "first" time. I love music so much.

As a male tenor singer, (AND [hate to sound immodest] a pretty decent one) I can recognize how ridiculously hard this song is, and to any non singers out there, know that this man is a LEGEND the notes themselves can be reached, but there's a HUGE leap from that to what he does, his huge control, the purity, the power of each note, the ease, the individuality of his timbre, the performance Takes YEARS to get near that level

I believe Steve Perry is actually a counter-tenor (male equivalent of alto) as was Freddie Mercury. Unfortunately, the voice is like a muscle. It has to be "exercised". And Steve took off too much time and aged. Currently, he can hit some of the same notes but doesn't have the full range or power that he used to. (And I'm an avid fan just being honest.) He may be able to get it back, who knows? But age and lack of consistent use takes quite a toll.

I truly believe this 1981 tour and specifically this Houston show which they captured on film is probably one of the most remarkable live performances in rock music. In the late 1970s into early 1980s for technical singers in the genre it was all about Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry taking that bar to a whole new level. I'm not a very sentimental person, but as a musician and singer, I tear up listening to it, because it's just so incredibly perfect and this is before all the technology we have today helping live performers. It's raw perfection. I enjoyed your analysis.

Steve Perry was and still is recognized as ... "The Voice'. Steve Perry set the bar so high that it is impossible to reach it. You know you are listening to a true Rock Star when 40 years alter people are still listening to him. A voice so pure and powerful that it touches your very soul. Steve Perry sang 'Live' better than most sing in Studio. Even auto-tune would be wasted trying to make his natural voice 'better'. There is no substitution for true talent.

I absolutely adore Steve Perry! He's one of the most brilliant rock singers ever. A beautiful and disciplined voice full of emotion and soul. Most Freddie Mercury fans can't seem to grasp that while Freddie was a genius songwriter, had an incredible stage presence and charisma, and was just an all-round super performer BUT his voice was excellent but not brilliant. He had a lot of weaknesses, especially singing live. Steve Perry sang just like, if not better, than the recorded versions. Freddie didn't.

Rebecca! Hi! There are some things that you missed that I think you'll appreciate. 1. The concert was in 1980. There were no in your monitors. He only had wedges. There were no wedges on the ramps. Therefore, he didn't have the luxury of getting a pristine feed in order to base his pitch off of. 2. His pitch throughout the ENTIRE CONCERT was astonishing/he wasn't experiencing fatigue in any way that was audible. 3. Whenever he sung very high notes he would always tilt his head to the right AND it didn't affect his ability to hit those notes.

Jonathan Cain wrote the song. He didn’t join until after Captured was recorded in late 1980. As for the monitors, they were under the stage/ramps/risers.If you watch the entire show he goes to the same spots over and over. Early 80’s is when understage monitors really started becoming the norm for headliners.

Steve has spoken several times in interviews how he got really stressed trying to keep up with expectations of always hitting those high notes while on grueling long tours. He felt a lot of stress & anxiety because he felt it was all on him & his instrument, his voice. Touring back to back to back had taken it's toll on him and his voice. He has now emerged back out into the mainstream after many years of silence & is singing once again, but this time in a lower range. He is an amazing song writer & a gorgeous voice and Journey could have never risen to their success without his amazing talent. He kept on writing those love ballots hit after hit..
