The first guitar solo ( 8:52 ) is "the midnight train." Neil is painting us a picture of a train with the guitar. The harmonic is the locomotive engine releasing steam. The four repeating notes is the "clickity-clack" of the train, which gets faster, and ends with the horn, "Whoooooo..."

Agree. And that is why I am surprised that Rick Beato did not speak overtly about Steve Perry's singing and vocal clarity. Those two things were a big part of this band's success and I think this is the only Journey song that is covered in Beato's series. He demonstrates his appreciation for the singing and vocal sound throughout, but he never actually mentions Steve Perry's name.

@@Markothunder I saw Journey live in concert back sometime in 2020, I was one of those people who was doubting whether or not they would *really* sound like Journey since Steve Perry left, but I got to say that Arnel Pineda is genuinely incredible with how similar he sounds and sings compared to Steve Perry. I was astonished because he was that good in concert.

He often gets overlooked when talking about "rock" singers because many feel his style is not rock. One of the all time greatest voices and talented singers? Yes, but the guys in Journey referred to him as a "crooner" and details like that often are why people don't make certain top ___ lists. Journey is/was a rock "band" but the question remains if that means Perry is a "rock singer". Personally, I agree and feel he is in part a rock singer but more than that. A more typical rock singer might be characterized as a Paul Rogers, Brian Johnson, Roger Daltry, etc., but I agree singers like Perry can also be classified as "rock" as well.
True story. I first stumbled across Rick’s WMTSG series back around Episode 17, Boston. So, March of 2018. I immediately told my brother about these, and we quickly consumed the previous episodes and eagerly consumed each new episode as they came out. Somewhere along the way, I casually remarked to my brother, “You know, if Rick ever does an episode on ‘Don’t stop believing,’ I’ll die a happy man.” Fast forward to June 2019, and I’m scheduled to have heart surgery. It’s a routine, low-risk procedure, but, you know, HEART SURGERY. The Sunday before the procedure, I wake up to find that Rick has posted Episode 69, the band is Journey, and the song is . . . Don’t Stop Believin’. So thanks, Rick, for simultaneously focusing on the song above all others I wanted to see AND making me fear I was about to die. Spoiler Alert, the surgery was a success, and it’s all good. Don’t Stop Believin’ . . .

A lot of times in crowds when Don't Stop Belivin' is played everyone sings along. 2 months ago i was at a Stryper concert and Separate Ways (World's Apart) Comes on over the speakers and most of the people in the crowd singing along. I had cold chills. Also, it felt like those 5 minutes slowed down...I guess because I was in the moment. I am like whenever I see Journey I'd love for time to just go slow as possible! But time flies when you're having fun.

I agree and my parents did the same played the old songs which from that out of all the bands they listen to I like Journey the best and Huey Lewis & the News 2nd and 3rd The Doobie Brothers. From branching out from what they had on tape and CD and I discovered Boston I really like them too along with Foreigner. Out of the bands that my parents listened to before i was born and they would still listen to it after i was born the band I have seen and twice is Doobie Brothers and we will be seeing Journey next year!!! :)
Steve Perry is a vocalist nonpareil, there’s simply no one who could sing in his vocal range with such ease and tonal quality. He set a bar so high ,what a force of nature! Great analysis.

Everybody loves this song, it's SO GOOD that it's become cliche. It's gotta be the #1 cliche rock song ever. Now here's Rick, showing us why we love it so much all over again, in a way that only Rick can do. I love watching this guy, he's so enthusiastic about music and you can tell that his favorite thing in the world is to share it with others.

I disagree with the most cliche song ever assessment. My vote would be for I Wanna Know What Love Is
Steve Perry was called, "The Voice," in the 80s, a well deserved nick!
One of the best parts of the opening verse is Perry's rhythm at "anywhere;" the dotted quarter, eighth-quarter combination, which he repeats at the second half. It adds to the atmospheric feel of the words, painting the picture. So overlooked, too.
I don't know if I am the Only One... But I have the sense that Rick Beato put a lot of heart and soul on this Review... Rick you nailed it... God Bless You!

I have a soft spot for this song. It was the only song, i could remember by heart, when my daughter asked me to sing her a song to go to bed. I've been singing this song to her for i think 7 years now. She called it "small town girl" and i will forever think of my daughter when i hear this song. I love the depth of knowledge i now know about this song and i will forever be grateful to content creators like you Rick. You give me so much more to the story and the music than i ever could think to ask about. As a music lover and musically inept... Well i can carry a tune, but i have a rather deep voice, making most songs hard to sing along to. But i digress. I've been watching your videos for a while and i love the content. Please never stop. I hope this brightens your day even a little. Rock on brother, and don't stop believing.
These videos REALLY point out the thought process...the hard work...and countless hours these bands put in to get their songs exactly right and THAT is what is missing in today's music! You have a gift of teaching, as well as, explaining, that makes your videos one-of-a-kind!
The song is so great because it has something for everyone - killer base lines, a leading keyboard, quirky drum fills, signature guitar riffs and the opportunity for everyone to sing their heart out.
CURSE YOU, RICK! I GOTTA GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND BE PRODUCTIVE AND YOU MAKE ME WANNA SIT AND LISTEN TO YOU ALL DAY!!! On the serious side, thanks for what you do... ;-)

To be in the studio while they were recording the final cut of this song must of been like painting a masterpiece.
Rick I saw the tour, I remember they had a green lazer light for the wheel in the sky song. First time I'd seen a laser show. It was in a square pattern, and they made sure they touched everyone in the Arena. They had the show perfectly geared up... Thank you Journey all these years later...

The first time I played in a group after years of hiatus, it was this song, on bass. I sat in with a duo when I heard this song begin, then interrupted and said, "It needs the bass part. Yes I can play it."
My favorite element of this record is Ross Valory's bass part during the pre-chorus. That chorus effect that Rick mentioned really makes the section jump out of the speakers.
@kensurrency2564

that is a very specific, special bass and i don’t think i’ve heard that tone on any other song since. it’s ross’s secret weapon.
I picked up this album, as did my childhood friend Keith on the day of it's release. We had seen Journey on their previous tour in 1980, DEPARTURE TOUR. We were huge JOURNEY fans (also BABYS fans. Particularly Head First- the two JONATHAN CAIN era albums, UNION JACKS & ON THE EDGE. EXCELLENT!!) Anyway, back to the point. It was a beautiful summer day and I was 17, Keith, almost 16. We took the album home to his house and this song is the opening song on Side 1. It was polished and as bright a sunlight in its production. But also undeniably excellent. In retrospect, it wasn't straight rock. It was Pop/ Rock. But REALLY GREAT pop/rock. I knew it was time for Journey to hit the stratosphere. They did. But as we learn in life and the story of this band after this album. When you reach the stratosphere there is only one way your band is going from there... Beyond a place of time or space. A place of timelessness. This was their true ESCAPE. A Masterwork from a hard working road band that had all of the pieces fall together in 1981. It only would have been matched had the singles and B-sides from their follow-up album FRONTIERS had actually been part of Side 2 of that album. ESCAPE is the pinnacle. I feel their best all around COMMERCIAL/meets COMPOSITIONAL albums from each KEY era are: LOOK INTO THE FUTURE (1976) INFINITY (1978) ESCAPE (1981) ARRIVAL (2001) REVELATION (2008) * Trial By Fire was too long and lacked cohesion and focus. It should have been 10 or 11 songs. No filler.
If i had had a music teacher like you in high school my life may have taken a different path. Always enjoyable and interesting.

Steve Perry, a remarkable vocalist
Rick's breakdowns are so incredible. I would love to see one for Mother, Father from the Escape album. I believe that it is one of the most amazing songs Journey ever did. Perry's vocals and Schon's incredible guitar solos are elevating.
For all of the decades that this song has been out there (yeah, I'm that seasoned), I've never realized how that there was so much architecture to it.
Rick : I don't even think I can bend that note that high. Later : Bends note pretty high when playing together with song. Steve Perry in the song : Don't stop, believin!
Rick, you make me appreciate every nuance of every amazing song! When I see Journey this summer on The Stadium tour, I will remember your analysis of this, my favorite Journey song!

The building riff, story telling, and saving the chorus til the song's end is also what makes the Diana Ross version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" a bona fide classic!

Journey can give thanks (at least in part) to David Chase (the producer/writer for the Sopranos) for using the song in the final episode. The Sopranos was an immensely popular show that helped propel the playing of the song on radio stations around the country. That gave the song a new life.....even years after it’s been off the air.
"Let me play along with the track..." "I don't have enough frets...I don't even think I can bend that note high enough..." Oh no, Rick, you stopped believing! ;) :D (Great vid as always!)

The whole song is a hook. There’s no part that’s NOT a hook. Lol. That’s why they could milk the whole thing for so long, without revealing the instruments, and the “Don’t Stop” line. The whole song was so damn strong, they didn’t need to. They knew what they had, and had the wisdom to be patient.
