Vocal Coach/Arranger Reacts to TENACIOUS D - THE PICK OF DESTINY
Ойын-сауық
In this video, I react for the first time to A MOVIE! “The Pick Of Destiny” by Jack Black’s Tenacious D. I analyse the incredibly… exhilarating musical performances, explain and demonstrate the featured vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. I love a good blend of rock, singing and comedy! This was a jolly good time indeed.

Not recognizing Meatloaf might just be the part of this reaction I was most amused by. "Actually a suppressed rockstar" was really endearing. Love you Lolli!

Came in the comments, but in a different way. Meatloaf was a crucial part of shaping rock in the 70's and 80's. I mean rock anthems that are still played at weddings to this day. "Let me sleep on it, I'll give you an answer in the morning." That's Meatloaf! If that doesn't ring a bell, he played a heavy chested man in fight club. You should check him out @The Fairy Voice Mother. This was so much fun to watch... Oh, btw. You brought it up so I think you might enjoy it. Tenacious D did a cover of hit me baby 1 more time. A really short cover, but if you enjoy it, maybe you could make it longer by reacting to a bunch of their covers... Pinball wizard and wicked games

I love that it seems like he's just spent the last couple decades occasionally showing up to do whatever he thinks would be fun or funny. This, Fight Club, he did an episode of South Park at one point. Just seems like a fun guy enjoying life.

Even though I lived a similar experience like young JB; with an over-bearing religious father, every time I see his part in the song come up I am just brimming with excitement. like "Yay! Meatloaf!"

Not only was that actually Dio in the opening song, but his father was played by Meatloaf. Not just a suppressed rock star, but another actual rock legend. There's a video of Dio singing his part and Jack being in awe of him. Then Dio actually asked if there was more for him to do, because he really liked the project. Side note: Kickapoo is a real town. IDK if there's one in Missouri or not, but there is one up in Wisconsin for sure, as well as a Kickapoo river.

I don't remember where I heard/read this, but Dio supposedly brought his own mic, and the studio crew said not to worry about that because they had everything ready for them. He began to do his part and blew out their mic. He apologized and explained that this is why he brings his own gear, and they had to redo the part with Dio's mic.

The 4 droogies were a cameo from the film Clockwork Orange and in that film mostly cockney accents.

If it were a Cameo then the actual actors from the movie would've done it. This is "just" a reference!
36:30 Dave Grohl plays Satan
2:58 "There seems to be some continuity between him and his dad's voice, so it's kinda like... dad, I got this from you." Incredibly flattering towards actual Jack Black since the dad in this scene is straight up Meatloaf.
Also, the part where they don't remember the song they played at the end of the movie is what leads to "Tribute" which was part of their self titled album in 2001.
The winner of the Finnish version of The Voice as few years back auditioned with Master Exploder from this movie.
Regarding the 'demonization of cockneys' 😉 The masked goons are a Clockwork Orange reference, who in that movie speak a strange blend of English/Russian slang called Nadsat - with the obligatory Cockney accents 🤣🤣🤣

She's wrong in this instance but not wrong in the overall point. It is overused and cringe. It is meant to portray ill intentions
BTW, those side beard things are called "Sideburns" in honor of Union Army General Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 - September 13, 1881) His spectacular growth of whiskers became known as "sideburns", deriving from the two parts of his surname.

Those specifically were sideburns known as Mutton Chops
There's a funny story regarding Dio's part in the Movie. Dio brought his own microphone but Jack Black told him not to use it because they already had some. Dio warned them and fried their microphone on the first take. They then used his microphone.

it took me a couple years after this came out before I realized that was Tim Robbins myself. Easy to miss, but hilarious he was in the movie.
One song you should check out after now having watched this and tribute is "The ballad of Hollywood jack and the rage cage" It's basically a song of everything that happened after this. Jack's fame in Hollywood, how they drifted and Kyle went down hill while jack kept rising, and how they reunited and Jack brought Kyle back up.

Highly recommend a documentary done by Dave Grohl called Sound City. It's about the studio of the same name in Van Nuys, LA. When the studio closed Grohl bought the sound board, and had it moved up to his home studio in Seattle. He decided to do a look back at all the legendary albums recorded at Sound City (including Nevermind by Nirvana) while at the same time asking the artist to his home to record new songs on that old sound board.
SCHOOL OF ROCK is a must JACK BLACK MOVIE! 🤞✌
The Cockney guys at the start is a reference to the movie A Clockwork Orange.

As for Dave, he can play any instrument and sing. The first Foo Fighters album was made by him and him alone, he wrote and played all instruments and did the vocals. And so did he do for this movie play the instruments you see him play and sing the vocals you see him sing. Tenacious D opened for Foo Fighters at festivals for a while and Dave has played the drums at some of Tenacious D shows. The most wholesome rockers in the world (Kyle, JB and Dave) are also the most wholesome friends in rock.

Yay!!! So happy you are checking this out. I can't believe more music reactors have not done this.
So fun fact: I have a replica Pick Of Destiny. It has only ever been used when my band covered Master Exploder from this movie
The cockney gang is a reference to the movie "A Clockwork Orange". The music cue when they showed up is also from the movie
They both are actually singing and playing guitar. Jack black is good but Kyle Gass is a really great player👌🏼🔥
9:24 'the demonization of cockneys' It's from 'A Clockwork Orange', Burgess' famous 1962 novel adapted into a mega-famous Kubrick 1971 film adaptation. Nominated for 4 Oscars and 7 British Academy Awards. Crazy. Grotesque. Try it?

For the expression you made when you recognized Dio, you made my day. Why not make another video on another of his performances? Love your channel. 😍🤘🏻
Like others mention, the mockumentary "Spinal Tap" would be an obvious choice to react to It will also come with a few "Oh, did that rock term come from here" -moments - especially if you have ever played Guitar Hero :)
Ben has a Dio wig on its unmistakable 😂 It was amazing going to the movies with Lolli ...😊❤❤
4:36 you just watched pure epicness at it´s best with MeatLoaf, Ronnie james Dio and Jack black in about one piece of musical art....
Michael Angelo Batio plays ambidextrous doubleneck guitars like that, for lack of a better description. he even has one with 4 necks in an x shape, the strap button is mounted to a bearing or something and he'll spin the whole thing 180 degrees and switch to the other 2 necks. they're not a common thing, but they are a real thing

An awesome watch is Play by Dave Grohl which is a 23 minute song where he plays every instrument. So he records the full playthrough on one instrument then does another 23 minute play through on a different instrument etc. Its 7 instruments including Piano, which he admits he doesn't (normally) play. He doesn't read music so he had to memorise all 23 minutes for each of the 7 instruments.
I can essentially recite this movie. Its amazing
I love when she is talking about "childlike wonder." Exactly why I watch reaction videos in general and her specifically. So great to watch someone have their first reactions to the music I love, but have been listening to for over 40 years in some cases. Brings a new excitement to it especially when they are blown away by it.
I like the guests who played small parts. They were awesome. But I liked Tim Robbins part too. But I didn't see anyone comment that he was in the movie too. The Stranger, with no leg. In the trench coat. Ya, him. That was Tim Robbins. This movie is always good for a laugh. I'm glad that you saw it also. Thanks for sharing this with us.
"It's very nirvana this guitar part" she says as the guy on drums is FROM nirvana lol

Comment not related to this video - although I did watch it and enjoyed it. ( but also because I've seen POD several times and always find it stupidly hilarious . . :) ) But anyway - I just happened upon an interview that you did a few years ago on another channel called Video Husky. I've been a subscriber to this channel for a couple of years now and after watching that interview . . . I like you even more now. :) You're last two video's - The Johnny Cash cover and the most recent one "I can't decide"
RIP the Loaf of Meat Loli might need to React to some of his work... or Rocky Horror...
I am VERY excited about this.

That was great lolli. Loved it!

The Reaction of Destiny! I was waiting something like this for years!
I would love to see you analyze Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp, so many good songs and good performances in that movie. A lot of actors you didn't know could sing really can sing.
I am so glad you did this.
I've enjoyed a millon reactions on this channel and thought this day will never come. but it finally did. Thanks for giving us such a great reaction and enoying the movie as we all did ♥

FACT: Ronnie James Dio went to Jack Black's studio whereby he had about 3 of the "best mics in the biz", and initially Ronnie stated "hey, so i've got my mic with me"...and after Jack's trial and error with his "...let's use our best mics..." phase which not a one of them worked to capture Dio's voice proper...Ronnie as cool and sweet as ever basically chuckled and said, "Yep, that's why i always bring mine with me." Ha! 🌱✌ kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWiNyaNpnbasYLQ.html
I absolutely love this movie. I never knew about Tenacious D until the movie, I just thought it was just another Jack Black movie. I can't wait to see your reactions to the movie!

I saw a bit of Kirsten Dunst in her face and now I can't unsee it
FYI. The dad in the beginning is Meatloaf
I remember first watching this with my sister when it first came out, and when the end credits came, we both looked at each other like: wtf did we just watch 😂😂
Please listen to Automatic Sun, released the 4th, 4th song on their upcoming album, Keep Me Fed. Live video w studio audio. You will enjoy.
probably the only movie/series/TVshow/chwhatever i've ever watched where i was like "can we get back to the music please" whenever the dialogue went on for like 5 minutes lol
Love this movie! And your reactions were hilarious 😂
A story I had heard about the Dio part he brought his own mic cause he didn't think the mic they had would work. They had him use the one they had and he blew it out and they switched to the one he used
Thanks, fun movie. The ' Tenacious D - Baby One More Time ' video. These guys are just awesome.
RIP MEATLOAF... an excellent choice for an actor, playing his father..
Did everyone not notice the kick back to clockwork orange in the accent piece
Hi Lolli! Please, you've got to check out Viviane Donner belting out 'The Great Gig in the Sky.' It’s absolutely mind-blowing! She’s a Brazilian gem with a voice to die for!
I think the cockney accent thing was just a clockwork orange reference
There's only 3 or four musicals in the world that you can get me to sit through and this one tops the list.
when i watched this movie i watched it so many times. yet also i did not know who meat loaf was. but even back then i knew a song from him. "i´d do anything for love - meat loaf" that song is still so good. definetly a reaction worth :)
loved your reaction
One funny thing about this movie is, that at the recording for Kickapoo Dio brought his own micro and said that he would break every other mic. Everyone laughed and said „just use our mic“ but then he really broke the mic, so they had to use his.
This is one of my all time favorite movies!
15:28 Takes me back to a jam session I had with this psychedelic band that told me to sound more like water. I play drums. I love this btw! One of my favorite musicals and my favorite vocal instructor/vocalist/Fairy Voice Mother.

I loved your reaction to seeing Dio 😅
"rightly so" XD Yasssss this was chaos. omw. Pause, dont mute
20:44 That guitar is most likely a nod to Michael Angelo Batio, who is known for playing a similar double neck guitar (and also a four-neck one, as if two wasn't ridiculous enough). He currently plays with Manowar.
You should also check Tenacious D Live. The battle with the devil doesn't have Dave Ghrol, but it is still awesome.

You had the best reaction to Dio out of anyone who's reacted to this song. That right there puts you so much above the rest
oh you might have to do Meatloaf... soon? Maybe watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)... !
When Ronnie showed up to record his parts for this he blew the studio mic his first take. Good thing he brings his own mic for that very reason ;) he then nailed it all in 1 take and stated later that he wanted to do more because he found it quite fun RIP to such a great presence in music
20:56 I'm pretty sure the split double guitar and tapping style displayed by Kyle Gas there is a direct reference to a guitarist called Michael Angelo Batio who was famous for such a playing style, treating both fretboards as if they were keyboards.
