Vocal Coach 1ST TIME Reaction to TENACIOUS D - “Tribute” (Analysis)

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I react for the first time to Tenacious D performing "Tribute”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate their vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. Jack Black and Kyle Gass are icons of comedy and it turns out they’re also serious musical talents!

You nailed it: the genius of Jack Black and Tenacious D is that they are always FULLY committed to the bit. Which includes both of them being legitimately brilliant musicians and songwriters. They're deadly serious about their extreme silliness, and few comedians (especially of their generations) have that kind of confidence. They've been a breath of fresh air to me for 25 years-and it really delighted me to see you take them so seriously as well. ❤

That _is_ Ben Stiller. He and Jack Black have been friends for a long time, and that's why JB finds his way into many of Stiller's projects. Likewise, Ben Stiller pops up in Black's stuff, too. In their movie, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, Ben Stiller plays a guitar store employee that sets them on the path to their goal for the movie.

It's not. It's about "The Devil's Trill" by Giuseppe Tartini. Tenacious D pretty much just retell the story about Tartini hearing the devil play the greatest piece of music in the world in a dream and Tartini's attempt at recreating it was so inferior he considered it to be no more than a tribute.

Also, I dont know, but in my book this a capella is a reference to how they in found secret messages in music when you played the LP backwards, and suddenly clear as day you hear the word "Lucifer". Rock was considered the downfall of the youth ever since the seductive power of Elvis hips... I do think the religious right in the US tried to claim a backwards messages in stairway to heaven, something about satan and 666 and even coupled this to the Manson murders and stuff... this was long before I was born but I do think this part is refencing some of that stuff.

Ahh, I love the bit you talk about feeling relaxed on the stage. Actually, thanks to your videos, last year I signed up for vocal lessons in my neighborhood music school and after only two months they had this talent show. It was a bunch of elementary schoolers, 30 year old me and one other adult vocal student. My teacher asked if I wanted to be involved, at that point I still couldn't sing at all, but thanks to you I knew singing was about having fun with your voice and also I was already doing theater, so I didn't mind being on stage. I figured I'd be fun and goofy and enjoy being there. I ended up doing a duet with my teacher, I sounded mostly terrible but I enjoyed the hell out of it and everyone loved it to bits! This is mostly thanks to your positive energy and joy about singing. I managed to forget about my self-consciousness and just tapped on my goofy side. It became one of my best memories ever. I had to drop out due to moving cities but I really want to go back to it again. Thank you for this channel and all your positive energy!

Pretty sure others said it already but not only Ben wassisname Stiller was in this video but the Devil itself is Dave Grohl! Also the song is inspired by The Devil went down to Georgia, which is also a great song about battling a Devil. Nice interpretation of the tune, i think the main point of it is that in this spur of the moment when Satan challenged them, they just improvised the best song in the world and beat him. And then wrote "Tribute" to tell their tale since they don't remember how the "best song in the world" went. Cheers

I believe, though could be one of those urban myths, that the original version of the song was actually referencing and included Stairway to Heaven as the "greatest song in the world" - there are videos floating around using a lot of the Stairway guitar work etc, but the Zeppelin denied the use of their copywritten song to an, at the time, unknown band, thus this album version was the one we all know and love. But again, could be a complete urban myth xD It is also worth noting, that if you're ever bored (or want a video series idea), they actually did a film, the soundtrack of which was their second album, called Pick of Destiny which is largely one big music video with some story in between connecting all the songs.

I think Tribute is closer to Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata than the crossroads story. Tartini says the devil appeared to him in a dream and played him a song on his violin, and Tartini immediately woke up and wrote the best piece that he would ever create--and then swore that it was so inferior to what he'd heard in the dream that he would have smashed his violin and given up music altogether if he didn't have to rely on it to put food on his plate. (He couldn't remember the greatest song in the world, so he had to settle for a tribute.)

That other guy is the one and only Kyle Gass aka K.G. or Rage Kage! The songs main section uses the chord sequence Am, G, F - Which just happens to also be the main chord sequence to Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven, undeniably and most definitely the greatest song ever written. I think this was their tribute to that song. Surprising you haven't heard any other Tenacious D songs as they're freaking awesome and Jack Black is just an insane rock vocalist to analyse. Please do more of them!

FVM: oh, the guy from the children's movies? Student: um, yes...yes he does kids films... And... Other things...

Jack does one of the funniest very minuscule things that I feel goes unnoticed. Any time he uses an adjective he uses the same word as an adverb in the same sentence. Ex: A whip Crack went his whippy tail. And : there shined a shiny demon 😂

Tenacious D is a parody of rock bands and the tropes that go with them. Jack Black is the over the top front man who draws everyones attention, while Kyle Gas is the stoic lead guitar who nonchalantly riffs his way into the hearts of the ladies.

Oh man. I've just stumbled upon your channel and I'm already binging it. I love your passion, your facial expressions just as much as all the brainy insights and analysis. I've only seen 3 videos so far, but I can already say: thank you for that shitload of great content! If you want to make a new subscriber very happy, I would like to contribute to the long list of bands you've probably never heard of: Blind Guardian. The video to react to would be their performance of The Bard's Song and Valhalla live at Wacken 2016. I've seen a lot of reactions for that one and besides the music, the crowd response is what gets every single reactor. I would love to see your reaction to that. And of course the reaction to Hansi's voice.

That is a great interpretation of the song that I haven't heard before, very smart! Another one is that this song actually has a lot of elements that are inspired a lot by Led Zeppelin and specifically by Stairway to Heaven (the structure of the song, the dynamics, even the ending), which is considered by many to be the greatest rock song ever.

Dear Lolli, now that you have dipped your feet into Tenacious D, I have two suggestions that will CHANGE YOUR LIFE! (hope I'm not too late for you to miss the comment) 1- Watch "Kickapoo"s video, it has a special participation that you will very much love. THEN in the same video look for a 2 min clip of that person recording the song in studio, it WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. Seriously. 2- Watch their recent video for "Wicked Game", it's a freaking piece of art. Unfortunately it's very short, so you can look for their live performance as well to complement the video. That's it, love your reactions, please keep it up... you're actually the only reactor I have a follow on (and I watch A LOT of you), that tells how good you are :)

The first version of this that was shown on TV somehow had a very Stairway to Heaven feel, which I guess was unsustainable in an officially released piece, so it became some tribute to some stereotypical seventies epic thing. At least in my mind.

Being the nerd I am. And my love for history of all kind. Often the far out kind, because I fall into rabbit holes and then end up somewhere learning something. I always took this song to be a nod to Robert Johnson. A country/blues singer from way back when. Born in the early 1900's and dying before 30. Being a very poor black man, no one knew of. To then make some really legendary songs like Cross Road Blues, and Hellhound on my trail. All leading to a story or legend being created around him. That he in fact sold his soul to a crossroad devil, for fame. And that is why he came from nowhere, made these songs. But then died young. And it became a sort of urban legend. Even if you just google it, it will come up with it. So it still hang on to this day. What is the famous Devil crossroads? "The Crossroads", where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for mastery of the blues, according to the legend" And to me, the way Tenacious D did this song, always made me connect it with that story/legend.
