Vocal Coach Analysis: Two very different versions of CREEP - Brian Justin Crum vs Haley Reinhart

Музыка

This beautiful song by Radiohead is so often used in singing competitions, and has been covered extensively by all sorts of singers. Today we take a look at one of the best live male vocals I have heard - Brian Justin Crum on AGT - and a totally different - JAZZY - version by Vintage Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinheart.
I love comparing different interpretations of a song, don't you? Some people will always only love the original version, which is fair enough. But I find it so cool when a great performer turns a song into their own version completely!
Let me know what YOU think of these tow versions. I would LOVE to hear from you!

Thank you so much! This is the first time I've seen a reviewer has commented on the several seconds of silence at the end when bjc finishes singing. To me that is the ultimate honor, that he had them all, to use your word, spellbound. When you hear that silence after a performance, before the applause, you know you've witnessed something truly rare and special. Thank you again for pointing this out.

The Haley Reinhart version was live. Postmodern Jukebox is a collective of musicians who collaborate with very different singers all covering Rock and Pop classics in a blues/Jazz style. On the day of recording Haley was sick and didn't feel all too well so they only did a couple of live one takes and took the best one. Absolutely fabulous in my opinion.

New sub here! Firstly, I don't know beans about music except that I love it! I really appreciate and understand your inciteful comments. I have listened to Brian's version of Creep at least 100 times and I get chills and tear up every.....single....time!❤😊 He connects to the song emotionally and projects his feelings out to the audience and that, to me, is what that song is all about. I love your comments about the audience and how you could hear a pin drop throughout and 4 to 5 seconds after! He just draws you in and doesn't let go! I love Brian and the work that he is doing and the music he is putting out!🥰 A new favorite of mine!❤ I have never heard of the female but I do love jazz. She has a nice voice and has a lot of cool riffs and runs but, to me, she was just singing and not connecting to the words emotionally. And that song, to me, requires an emotional attachment. Just my opinion. I'll stick to Brian but thank you for sharing your comparison and contrast of the two artists!😊 I'll be back........❤

Her vocal style for this song was similiar to a style she did on American Idol. Not the same song but one of top performances on Idol of all time.

I've listened to Haley's version many many times, Brian's only once quite a long time ago... Let's see how it goes today...Hm, during his introduction Brian still doesn't get me, his pacing / phrasing feels akward... no, still not my thing - of course, his voice is incredible, but for me he lacks a sense of rhythm... it's a matter of taste for sure, but for me PMJ's version is MUCH more exciting...

Since you said you have listened to the Brian Justin Crum performance of Creep many times, I thought I point you to this upload that, when listening with headphones, you can hear has a lot fuller and clearer instrumental accompaniment and ambient atmosphere, and is also clearer overall. The title on KZread is: Brian Justin Crum - Creep - Best Audio - America's Got Talent - Judge Cuts - July 19, 2016

I remember the first time I heard Brian (or Justin, not sure which one he goes by) singing Creep. At first, his voice is so quiet, timid, it made me pay attention, and then he goes on this amazing crescendo, and totally caught me by surprise. I felt this rush of emotion, and my eyes filled up with tears. I think this is what the audience is experiencing, and why they don't scream like mad banshees. Notice that many are touching their face, it's self-soothing. They too feel this unexpected rush of emotions, and they're trying to deal with it, while listening to this hauntingly beautiful voice that just won't stop (I remember feeling like I was out of breath), until it finally resolves when his voice "breaks" and becomes small again. A masterful performance. Haley's version makes no sense to me. She has a beautiful voice, beautiful tone, but never in a million year would I believe this person is a "creep", nor a weirdo, nor insecure about anything. I'd rather she be honest, and sing a sexy song in a sexy way, and be a sexy songstress, if that's her shtick. Is it ok to sing a song completely out of character? Of course it is. Sing the saddest song in a funny way, a heartbreaking song like it came from a Disney musical, why not! Just not my cup of tea.

Scott’s PMJ arrangement is fantastic, you didn’t mention the change in tempo (6/8 as opposed to standard 4/4)or key signature plus you made no mention of the key change where Haley changed key on her own before the band changed which is a rare feat in itself. The male singer only copied the song with embellishments nothing special, it was probably a one off performance with audio enhancements where PMJ’s vid was just a one camera filmed vid of one of the tunes from their stage show that they perform every night during their tours. It was filmed on one of their days off during their European tour in a unfamiliar banquet room with minimal basic touring equipment and a haphazard quick setup and only one take. They filmed a couple more of their show tunes during that same session as it was their first overseas tour and they were just winging it and having a fun experience. The male singers well rehearsed and professionally presented version was vocally top notch but production outshined the talent, PMJ’s version was the complete opposite with the talent far outshining the low budget production.

Haley Reinhart finished third on the 10th season of American idol in 2011. I thought she should have won, and wasn't interested in the remaining contestants after she was eliminated. I think the most emotional and impressive performance of Creep I have seen is the live performance from about 10 years ago by Sarah Geronimo, of the Philippines. This seems like the venue recording: Sarah Geronimo - Creep [HD AUDIO REMASTERED]

I think it's difficult to establish a 'connection' to a performance unless you listen to it without breaking it up with pauses to analyze short bits.

Not sure how I stumbled onto this video, but I also love this performance and I really enjoyed your reaction. Brian is an incredible talent, and you seem very knowledgeable in regards to the human voice and performance. Unfortunately, your finishing statements are slightly misguided. I'm sorry to shatter this fantasy, but the reason the audience were so silent throughout the performance and for roughly four seconds afterwards was simply down to editing. Brian's microphone has been isolated and the sound from the audience is dampened. In fact, even in the broadcasted clip, you can hear that audience abruptly erupt into applause out of nowhere -- because the sound was muted until they wanted us to hear it (which is quite poor editing, in my opinion). Additionally, the reaction-shots you see from both the audience and judges, although quite possibly similar during Brian's performance, are also often pulled from other recordings throughout the day or even from different days entirely. The images you see on screen often happened at a different time entirely to the moment you are listening to -- it's all to create the idealised narrative for a televised show. Basically, the presentation was a bit fraudulent, but the talent was undeniable.

I came looking for this comment. I think both are beautiful in their own way, but I do think Brian's version is enhanced by the editing. Tara Simon (previous contestant and current voice coach) has done an extensive breakdown of the manipulation that happens during the competition shows. So while still beautiful, it really is a different vibe from the one take approach of PMJ.

I'm not a Haley fan, but thought her rendition of this classic was magnificent. I suspect you are too invested in the other singer to appreciate what she did with this song. Haley changed this song in a way that truly made it hers. To me the other singer just sang beautifully an old classic and was forgettable. Haley's version was more on the unforgettable side of the scale. But that's just my opinion, one without any credentials.

Real hard to compare .. Both did a great job singing .. But when I heard her do a Elton John song on American idol .. I followed her ever since .. Let alone she did a Led Zeppeplin .. The only judge backing her on American Idol ,was Steven Tyler from Aerosmith , I think he had his hands in getting to sing with PMJ .. She lost on Idol .. but some how she made it to PMJ .. I think Steven seen something more in her then the two other judges ..

It's all about the meaning, and the adequation between ambiance and words...Postmodern jukebox are very talented musicians and singers and they make playful versions of modern songs, bringing them in different old styles & vibes... Haley is supremely good but the previous artist interpretation seems closer to the core of the song, from what we heard in the original... I totally agree with you.

I first saw Halley Reinhart on American Idol. She was an entertaining singer contestant. She was eliminated by the American people as they voted on contestants at this point. I liked Lauren Alaina that season and she went to second place. For several years there was always someone on Lauren's video posts bad mouthing Lauren after that season and I had an inkling it was a fan of Halley's or someone very close to Halley or Halley herself. So, that is my memory of Halley Reinhart. I still enjoy listening to her, but as I said, I love Lauren Alaina as a singer and her personality. Lauren's lifetime goal was making it to the Grand Ole Opry, being a country based singer. She was voted as a member just last year, after 10 plus years of singing on the road.

Are you serious? Brian Justin Crum? BORING, he sounded forced --Fake. Haley really made this song her own....exciting, playful & beautiful. Almost a different song. If you wanted the feel of Radiohead, then listen to Radiohead. Not a stripped down version as with Crum--pretending to be passionate. I'd never put him on my playlist. But Haley? YES! So natural & flowing.
