I went to a special Christmas concert for a homeless charity and he was a performer. Sweet Jesus. For the final number, he hit a note and held for longer than a human should be able to without their vocal cords combusting. People were concerned and looking around, wondering if he was going to need an ambulance when he was done. But, he just ended the note and started singing the next part. Easily the best vocal performance I've ever seen live.

In the part of the video where you explain that people's brains manage to assign the correct vowel to a word that's sung differently than usual; there's a name for that! It's called Top Down Processing. Top Down Processing is a way of processing information by with we take the information within it's given context and then interpreting it based around that. That one note without the context of the lyrics around it probably wouldn't have been interpreted correctly, but since there were other words around it, we're able to properly understand what they're saying

D5 @ 11:01 I literally said, "Mmph, I like that!" at the same time you did, so JINX! 🙃 That is definitely one of his best notes. I've listened to him for 2 decades and I've yet to hear a vocalist comparable. And for those who know, he's not just the effortless, Mr. BIG note, one-trick-pony guy as he's so often labeled. Everything else just comes so easy to him that what most people train forever to be able to execute even once, he routinely uses as throw-away material ( e.g. the perfectly executed riffs, the transitions in and out of the big notes, using the riffs as the transitions, etc. ). So good.

Some of David’s C5s sound different because the performances are from quite some time ago when he was still an opera singer. His tone has changed a bit to fit more of his soulful gospel music, as opposed to the fuller, ‘beefier’ quality he had when he first joined the Gaither Vocal Band.

I have always struggled to understand why it is that I can belt certain words better than others- and I thought it was always because of the vowel- but it never struck me that it could ALSO be because of the consonant with which the word begins! The consonant at the beginning of the word sets the tongue in a specific position that’s not easily moved 🤯🤯🤯🤯. I’m probably just dumb, but you moved a HUGE hurdle for me Sam!

your commentary on vowels (along with everything else) is always so fascinating. human brains are wack for hearing sounds that aren't actually being made. if you're taking requests, i'd love it if you watched/analyzed literally anything jessica vosk has sung. her vowels consistently sound so interesting/pure to me (and my untrained ears), and i'm interested to know what it is about her technique that *makes* them sound that way. Wow, his voice is fantastic. I don't listen to Christian music so I've never heard of him. I, too, really liked when he went into vibrato. It just seemed to complete the note. I don't know if you would be willing to do a reaction of Jani Lane, the past lead singer of Warrant. He wrote all of their music, if I'm not mistaken and I love his music. Even though he is no longer with us his music is still great today, imo. Thank you for a very educational reaction as usual. You are great and I truly love this channel.

Yessss I was so excited to see this. I grew up listening to the Gaithers, and I’ve loved David since the first time I heard him. I think there’s such a beautiful brightness to his voice. I’d love to hear him do an operatic role. Maybe Pinkerton from Madama Butterfly or Rodolfo from La boheme.

My favorite Gaither Vocal Band lineup was the group at 3:50. David with Guy Penrod and Mark Lowry. Definitely check out Mark he’s great too. He also wrote Mary Did You Know.

I think I would have really enjoyed being a voice coach . . . . my ears are quite efficient...... and I do love music and singing ( spent many years in Choir.) But my voice doesn't sound the way I want it to sound, so I just enjoy the blessing of music. Thank you for your excellent contribution ~ always loved David Phelps voice!

How does he add such a beautiful vibrato after singing so strong and for so long?! It’s so hard to do that. How do people do it??

If you like David Phelps, you should listen/react/analyze one (or more if you want) of his songs. Some of my suggestions to you would be The Dream, O Holy Night (one with the green sweater), or You Will Never Walk Alone. They are all live by the way.

I love watching your videos and learning about vocal skills - I've always loved singing and had lessons when I was younger but learning about all the technical skills is so interesting! I would love to see you analyse Sigrid, especially when singing "Raw" - I wonder what you make of her Norwegian accent and singing technique - I find her really unusal.
