I actually used to sing background for David. Yes he is a southern gospel singer, but he is classically trained and holds a master's degree from Baylor University. In his falsetto he actually hits Eb6.

He rarely uses falsetto....its his natural voice ....thats why its so rich n why he has such excellent control....falsetto uses too much air to support it so long...n solid. Its all natural baby!!!

David is THE best male singer alive, and he deserves SO much more recognition than he has gotten.

Yes, I think he is one of the best singers alive. I love David Phelps, he deserves way more recognition.

I have had the pleasure of seeing David Phelps in person twice and I am here to tell you he is every bit the perfect singer in person! I have never heard anyone sing the way this man sings and I have been listening to music for over sixty years! If you ever get the chance to see him perform live you would be insane not to jump on it. Trust me, buy your ticket and go see him in person. If you love music, you will never be the same again!

There is singing, there is singing well, there is being a great singer ….. then there is David Phelps. He is standing in a league of his own with his voice.. It is not only the notes that he effortlessly hits, the faultless tone, and the power, its the pitch PERFECT performance, and I mean PERFECT ! WOW.

David Phelps went to Baylor University in Texas where he studied music. His teachers kept encouraging him to sing opera but he told them he wanted to use his voice to praise God. I have been to one of his concerts and he is amazing. Thanks for this video.

I've been following David Phelps for 20 years and it's amazing that he is just now getting some recognition outside of the gospel/Christian circle. He is THE most incredible singer ever!

Yeah, and he does it all for the glory of God in Christ Jesus. I've seen Mr Phelps live like, five times and had the pleasure of meeting him a couple times. He is the real deal. The most likeable, genuine Godly guy you could imagine.

He is by far the best live vocalist I’ve ever heard. He was classically trained at Baylor University. He’s been doing this professionally I believe since 1998. So 20 years and still sounds as strong as ever. I’ve seen him live several times. His solo shows last 2+ hours and to sustain that range for an entire show with ease is the most incredible vocal skill I’ve ever witnessed.

Same. I last saw him in 2008, but I have saw him three times live. Every note was perfect and better than the recording. And to do it all night (and also tour). It's crazy. God wanted this man to "sang" and so it happened, and it happened perfectly.

He’s a gospel singer. Gospel is where my vocal career started, and it’s still my first love. I’ve been telling people for years that David is one of THE best male vocalists on the planet today! I enjoyed your reaction so much, because you “get it!” You know that you are hearing pure talent and pure genius, when a lot of people have no idea how amazing a gift like his really is.

Bingo. The man is a ball of talent and God inspired C5s. Few can hit the note but none like David. When I hit As or Bs, I want in the paper because it's rare, even when they sound like crap. :P

He is definitely a Gospel singer and the best I have ever heard - I would place him as the best singer I have ever heard - he is amazing - and especially in concert 💖

Wes Hampton who sang with David Phelps in the Gaither Vocal Band referred to David as an alien because his vocals were out of this world. There's not too many like him.

I've been a David Phelps fan for 20 years. He's a humble family man and is amazingly gifted. He does a couple duets with his daughter Maggie on youtube. She is talented as well

Hes 49 I think. He is solo now, unless he includes his daughters. He traveled with the Gaither vocal band for several years. He has a farm in Tennessee on which he converted a barn into a theater (I believe mostly by himself) he is a renaissance man if there is one. He was formally trained and does classical numbers in his concerts. Word has it that he did do opera early on. The fascinating thing about his physical composition, is that he has the vocal cords of a baritone but the range of a tenor, and his oversized skull increases his resonance but his love for God takes him over the top.

He has vocal folds of a tenor and a range of a tenor. And larger skull is not gonna increase the ring. It’s just not how the voice works.

David's God-given talent has been classically trained, and he could probably accumulate more wealth and fame in the field of opera (though I've never heard him sing anything other than praise music). He was born in 1969, and he has four children. Those who've met him in person say his heart is as big as his voice, and he's a humble man. I've heard his vocal range described as three octaves, but I swear it has to be more. Glad you enjoyed him, he's been around for decades!

You will be blessed by the hearing of not only his voice but the message he brings. Also, where he has a full head of blonde curly hair, he is much younger. The older David has the shorter thinning hair, maybe his mid-forties? Also check out his performance of Nessus Dorma. Exquisite.

Met David a few months ago at one of his concerts. He blew me away. Also, up close his hair is not thinning but actually pretty thick and, of course, curly (one of his trademarks). He looks a lot different in person than on videos or pictures. A really handsome man.

The absolute best Tenor on the planet. Of course that is my opinion. It has been a pleasure listening to him for at least 15-20 years now. So, clean, smooth and a lot of control. As an audio engineer, he is a dream come true a big PA.

Just saying, if you love harmony, listen to more of the Gaither Vocal Band.

David Phelps is the epitome of male vocal singing.

I've only found this living legend recently too, from channels focusing on vocals or technicals more, such as that fedsax channel. David Phelps is another example of talent doesn't equate fame, and vise versa. I think he's probably well known in the gospel scene though.

Yeah he's been hidden within the gospel community for many years now. A treasure many of us have enjoyed for a long, long time. Glad to have you on board the Phelps train!

David Phelps is one of the best singers you will ever hear. He went to Baylor Univ. and graduated in I think 1992. He sang for the Gaither Vocal Band from 1997-2005 and again 2009-2015. He finally went off on his own to become a solo artist. His sister Sherri sang backup for him, but passed away in 2012 of Cancer. His other sister Kari is a professional trumpeter who tours with the Miller Brass Ensemble. He is married, has 4 kids, has won 12 Dove awards, (I believe it is), and was a 4 time Grammy nominee. Amazing, Amazing voice. If you want to hear more of course just search his name, if you love harmony search Gaither Vocal Band.

He is a classically trained Lyric tenor (he majored in stage performance and vocal) and a southern gospel vocalist/musician. He was a part of the gather vocal band, now he is doing solo stuff and should be 48 by now.

@@urowskiilive4701 It's called vibrato. It's a vocal technique you achieve by Twitching your vocal muscles at a faster-than-usual pace.

I had never heard of him before... until I had the opportunity to hear him in concert nearly 11 years ago. The look on your face pretty much sums up my expression during the entire concert! Haha! IMO, he is even better today, and perhaps even better to see and hear in person. He frequently sings notes spontaneously higher than his albums in concert. David also seems to be the genuine article. He is not as famous because he chooses to represent Christ. No large media outlet would want to make him more known. We all know this (those who have followed him over the years).

My first knowledge of him ......was his involvement with Bill Gaithers Gospel Group years back. He has cds with them as well as his own cds. Recently have seen videos of him in single concert rooms. He is wonderful and inspiring. Musically absolutely spectacular. So well trained and my favorite Song is. ." this is the end of the beginning."

Ive seen David twice. The first was at a Gaither Christmas concert, and the second was on his farm at one of his "Barn Bash" in Culleoka TN. The man is amazing.

I have been listening to him since his early days in the vocal band. Seen him a few times in person. Got to go to the barn in June for his Hymnal taping. Fantastic!. My friend lives near culleoka tn around lima. Two people that go to his church work on Davids farm and for events.

I have loved him for many many years. I’ve seen him live and it’s just amazing. Definitely a God given talent.

I do listen to the Gaither Vocal Band for hours.. I am so happy that you can hear David Phelps and know of his God given gifts.. I love watching your reaction and now he is about 50 ish years old.

David was a part of Gaithers gathering for years! Have watched him and adored his pure voice for so long!

He turned 50 this past October. He is amazing. He has a Barn Bash every Labor Day weekend at his barn at his home and you can buy a ticket and see him in person. He's way better in person. The quartet he was singing with is the Gaither Vocal band. Best tenor out there. Drs at Vanderbilt hosp looked at his vocal cords and they were very unusual compared to the general public. Watch O Holy Night from Christmas in the country and These Are They in Israel!

I have a favorite concert of David's from Nov 2012 in which his vocals were absolutely brilliant. He was clean shaven and wearing a tuxedo (doesn't matter for his singing; I am just describing what he looked like, so you can look for the videos). He sang 'Ave Maria,' 'The Lord's Prayer,' 'Nessun Dorma,' and 'O Mio Babbino Caro' with really perfect control of his range and dynamics.

He not only resonates those glorious notes, but he resonates his amazing love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. That voice - along with all the Gaither Vocal Band singers' voices are all used to express worship. Their excellence is dedicated to Him and Him alone!

It was so much fun to watch your reactions. Obviously the first time you have heard him sing? You did not know what you were missing. David Phelps is otherworldly and defies just about everything I've ever thought about the definition of a traditional tenor.

I had the opportunity to go to David's concert in Ohio and he will blow your mind. What a witness for God. I had my picture taken with him and have it on my refrigerator.

David Phelps is best known (as far as I know) for being the tenor in the Gaither Vocal Band from 1997-2005 and 2009-2017. As of 2017, the current Gaither Vocal Band lineup is: tenors: Reggie Smith and Wes Hampton. Lead: Aaron Crabb. Baritone: Todd Suttles. Bass: Bill Gaither. Phelps is still active and is either solo or in another vocal group.

We shall behold him is one of his best song for me...

Bill Gaither discovered David in the mid/late 90's. He was part of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1997-2005 and again from 2009-2017. Bill has gone on record saying that "David is the best tenor he has ever heard." That is a HUGE statement coming a man of Bill Gaither's stature in the gospel music industry.

David is now 50 and he still can hit the high notes but not as frequently, and many times he "slides" to get up there. No matter, he's still my all time favorite singer and that will never change! Thanks for your wonderful comments!

First time watching one of your videos. I fucking love David Phelps. He's the most talented make vocalist I've ever heard, and it's because of his incredible stability and resonance. Anyway, I loved your video! Immediately subscribed before it even finished!

He now is probably 48-49. In the videos, he was in his late 20's and 30's but he can still hit those high C's. He's was classically trained at Baylor University in Texas.
