UPDATE: Sandi has a collapsing trachea. Not sure why it affected her so harshly and quickly, but she is home now and we are going to try to medically manage it for now. If the problems continues we will have a scope performed to assess other options.

    Jay Bates 2 Watching and listening to the dog, totally sounds like laryngeal paralysis. That's essentially a breakdown of the cartilage rings that make up the structure of the trachea. A lot of doctors will try a medication like butorphanol or temeril-p, that reduces the cough and sedates the dog. If that does not work to allow the pet to heal, there is a surgical correction that uses a synthetic material to keep the trachea open, and it is sutured to the bod of the trachea. Best of luck with your pooch brother!

    For your miter saw "wings", why not design a telescoping/sliding version? This way as you adjust the saw you can keep them close for dust collecting.

    Good news for your dog, They bring so much pleasure and ask so little. I no longer have a dog as my health has deaerated and I would not be able to take them for a walk so when my second dog passed away from old age I got a cat, don't need to take it for a walk but it still keeps me going. I hope the medicine route works and no more options are needed. Keep she well and also look after yourself, you have a lot on and can easily get exhausted without realising it.

    Jay, love your videos man, I just started some woodworking projects as well. But the reason I am commenting, our dog Lana had a somewhat similar issue, one thing that helped a ton was raising her dog bowl so she didn't have to hunch over to eat. (My first wood project since highschool). All of her issues have stopped since I built that. Keep it up sir, enjoy all of your videos, good luck!

    Raising the dog bowl is an appropriate solution. But Sandi likes to lay down and eat which puts the food at a similar level to her body as if the food was elevated.

    one thing to note about the new DC: it will be super, super loud. i have one and holy crap it hurts even with ear protection. if you can, find a way to contain it either in a closet or have the blower and exhaust section isolated in an area you can sound proof. also, exhaust outside if you can. i am looking at separating my blower and sticking it up in the crawlspace above my garage shop with a muffler and potentially exhausting outside or, if worse comes to worst, route it back down into the garage for the filters & dust bin.

    Any way of fixing Sandi's collapsing Trakea ? Hope she does better, beautiful dog/companion/family member! Could you put some of those plastic (thick sturdy type) accordion style sliding doors on the sides of the miter saw. Attach to the miter saw somehow so whenever you change the angle they move as the angle changes. Would keep you from having to remove what you have now all the time. Still vote for exhaust hole in wall.

    You might also be able to put hinges on the wings so that they will fold back and adjust to the angle of your saw.

    So sorry to hear about your dog's problem. I hope that medication works, but if it takes surgery, I wish you the best. That's a nice idea for the wings on your miter saw. It seems that no matter how good the dust collector is, a miter saw still throws stuff out. Those wings should help a lot, especially when you get the higher powered DC. How many CFM will it be? I'm looking to upgrade, and would like to get the biggest that my wiring will handle. Good luck.

  • @JayBates2

    @JayBates2

    My current collector is rated at 1-1/2 HP and 775 CFM. I'm upgrading to the CV1800 which is rated at 5 HP and 1442 CFM

    Just watching this and I have reached the point where you are showing the 'wings' on your mitre saw. Funny I was going to suggest something like this after your video explaining your mitre saw dust 'containment' a while ago. What I plan on doing, when I get around to building a dedicated station, however, is seeing if I can put sliding doors in where you have wings. This way I can move them left and right as I angle the saw around. Your thoughts?

  • @JayBates2

    @JayBates2

    7 жыл бұрын

    That would work too but I don't think moving the wings will be an inconvenience. About the same effort as folding something else back.

    Jay, how do you like your SawStop over-arm dust collection? I have made one that works moderately well, but I find two things: - I'm not crazy about guards in general that restrict your vision of the blade and feed; - I can't use it for all tasks. I'm about ready to remove it for good, so I wonder if my experience is different from yours. Here's hoping your dog is better soon. Steve

    I like it. It did take me a while to get used to not seeing the blade but as long as you keep the material tight against the fence all should be well. It's not suitable for 100% of situations though. For non through cuts or for rip cuts less than 3/4" wide I do replace it with the regular riving knife. It's quick and easy to swap out and I always put it back on when I"m done. Like any other tool, use it when it's beneficial and don't when it doesn't fit the situation.
