Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major Op. 83, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. NOT the well-known studio 1940 recording from May 9. This is an earlier live broadcast from May 6.
"Horowitz's May 6, 1940 performance of the B-Flat Concerto in New York was a sensation. The event was an all-Brahms charity concert at Carnegie Hall with Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra. New York Times' critic Olin Downes wrote that "Mr. Horowitz played what is probably the greatest of piano concertos with all the sincerity, the virility and fire of his young heart, and the abundant virtuosity and power which are phenomenally at his command, and...one ventures to say that this was playing of a breadth, a masculinity, a poetry and withal a heroic spirit which would have satisfied the composer." Downes reported the audience to have applauded each movement and cheered at the end. On May 9 he recorded the concerto for RCA Victor studios.

This May 6th broadcast most likely remained unpublished because live broadcasts were recorded on 16-inch discs at 33rpm. Most home record players only played 78rpm sides, which is why RCA had Horowitz and Toscanini record that concerto in the studio a few days after this broadcast.

That is Correct as the Recording was Made in the early part of the war in 1940 and was Reissued in the 1970's in the Toscanini Edition by RCA Victor and it is equally as good as the both Brahms Piano Concertos Recorded by His Master's Voice in 1968 by Daniel Barenboim and the New Philharmonia Orchestra Conducted by Sir John Barbirolli for His Master's Voice Concerto Number one ASD 2353 and Concerto Number two ASD 2413 and it was also on Tuesday May 6th 1941 that Vladimir Horowitz and Arturo Toscanini Recorded the first of two Recordings of the Tchaikovsky B flat Minor Piano Concerto with the NBC Symphony Orchestra which was Reissued in 1956 under licence by His Master's Voice in the Golden Treasurey of Immortal Performances Record Number CSLP 505 and almost two years later they Recorded the work again on Sunday April 25th 1943 at a War Bond Concert which was Reissued in 1960 by RCA Victor, and I always find the third Movement of this work to be the Most haunting

That is not quite true as the Brahms Second Piano Concerto which Vladimir Horowitz and Arturo Toscanini made together was in fact Recorded in 1940 and a year later on Tuesday May 6th 1941 they Made the first of two Recordings of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto Number one in B flat Minor Op 23 Reissued under licence by His Master's Voice in 1956 in the Golden Treasurey of Immortal Performances Record Number CSLP 505 and almost two years later they Recorded the work again on Sunday April 25th 1943 at a live Concert given at Carganini Hall and Reissued by RCA Victor in 1960 Record Number RB16190 and both Records were Made with the NBC Symphony Orchestra and for Recommendation I would Recommend the 1956 Reissue of the 1941 Recording as it's far clearer than the later one

Wow, in all my years thus far revering and upholding master Horowitz's name, I honestly never knew he had a sister who moreover was also musically equipped!....this brings to me an entirely new perspective!!

I listened to that piece so many times, I love it so much ! But I think it's probably the first time that I'm completly satisfied by the interpretation of the pianist. I'm myself pianist, I played 30 different concertos or concertant pieces with many symphonic or chamber orchestras but still not dared to play this one. Thank you very much for posting it !

Hearing this most dynamic performance once again in 2023!, I am struck how full and rich Horowitz' chord playing was. He really took over the lead in the 2nd movement making the infamous knotty technique episodes so crystal clear and as if easy.

One thing recordings like this do is show what a wonderful ensemble player Horowitz. In terms of musical choices, his creative impulses are subservient to the greater musical good

Horowitz was invited several times to appear in Hollywood films (one particular request was for him to play a portion of the Rhapsody in Blue) and he rejected all proposals. Also in the 50’s, there were offers for him to give TV recitals - which he also rejected. He also never played a solo concert on the radio except for once in 1951.

May not be the last word on Brahms' Op. 83 but Horowitz is wonderful here. Good thing he didn't seem to have an affinity for the work because, otherwise, what would the inspiration and quality have been?

He not only understood piano mechanism completely, he had a phenomenal ear for acoustics. When playing solo he found the best spot to place the piano. I don't know if that ability came into play for concerti

Thank you for the recording-he looks like he had a lot to eat before he took this photo. It doesn’t look like him to me… The first mvmt was nice some parts really clean. The opening is a little bit aggressive for me I think it’s the only part out of the whole concerto where he has the freedom to be Horowitz. The rest of the concerto feels kind of restrained to me I think it has to do with the with the writing.

@@jefolson6989 I think you might be right ! Toscanini was very opinionated. I always felt that somehow he restrained Horowitz in order to fit any concerto into his own musical conception. Yet, Toscanini truly admired Horowitz's abilities.... It's funny because this is too fast but the Tchaikovsky first concerto that they recorded together are too slow. Bruno Walter/Horowitz is better !

  • @jefolson6989

@@martinmysteres1384 I think Horowitz deferred to Toscanini for family reasons. It was in everyone's best interest to keep his father in law happy! But Toscanini is often faster than I'd like. I used to think it was so longer pieces would fit on the 78s, but he is that way on performances outside the studio.
