He makes Scarlatti sing, and even in these old recordings he makes the pedal sound as if it is breathing.
Vladimir Horowitz is one of the few pianists whose performances of Scarlatti truly honor the marvelous spirit of the music. Horowitz approaches these sonatas with the same heartfelt respect that he would give to Beethoven, Schumann, or Chopin. I have long believed that Scarlatti's sonatas possess real majesty that far too many pianists and harpsichordists fail to convey. The Scarlatti recordings by Horowitz are imbued with vitality and emotion that always moves me. Thank you for providing us with this wonderful recital.
I didn't think there were any recordings by Horowitz left I didn't know. How wonderful to hear his unique delicacy. (I have heard mention that there may in fact be x2 more Medtner fairytails in university archive somewhere. Very exciting thought.)
Well thank you very much for this treasure ...
WOW, amazing!!!
They call him the last romantic but he plays these baroque pieces with the proper style
From the first notes... breathtaking!
Thank you so, so much for sharing!!!
Phenomenal! The beauty, the natural simplicity, his smooth and seamless dynamics, the bell-like clarity of his sound, the singing legato, the transcendental virtuosity... Somehow I still can not imagine these sonatas being played by someone else, although I know that's probably unfair. Valid still after more than seventy yerrs.

Großartig, wie immer sein Scarlatti! Die Vielfalt der Nuancen, die er realisiert, ist erstaunlich...Der einzige mögliche Vergleich: Benedetti Michelangeli.

Very unfair comment indeed given the fact t Volodja played on a heavily prepared piano. Pletnev, Pogorelich, Haskil and recently a few younger pianists can easily reach the same heights as Horowitz..on pianos unprepared by Franz Mohr.

@@thepianocornertpc Pletnev and Pogorelich (and ABM) are Horowitz level. Haskils Scarlatti album isn't (to me). Gilels didn't nail Scarlatti either, alas.

I once had the immense privilege of touring with Murray Perahia. We asked him who his favourite pianist was, and he said “Vladimir Horowitz. He taught me how to phrase.”

Merveilleux . .
Astoundingly beautiful, as only Horowitz can render.
Delightful. So much naturalness in his playing. A recording of Scarlatti sonatas by Maria Tipo from the '50s is another delight. The recording she made for EMI many years later is not at the same level.

@@doGreatartistsgrowontrees You're welcome. I also was very impressed by her effortless pianissimo. These Goldbergs are really special. Better than her Clementi sonatas, actually...

@@Pogouldangeliwitz I am ashamed about never having paid any attention to Tipo’s Goldbergs until today. I am truly mesmerized by her understanding, immersion and virtuosity here. It’s the aural equivalent of looking at a restored old master painting. Or something similar. This is really a revelation to me and it goes to the very tippy top. And the beauty is just indescribable. Sorry if I am sounding over the top but THANK YOU for making me aware of this unique musical gift.
La leggerezza di Horowitz è insuperabile!!!
Scarlatti is a mine field for mistakes. It is clean music and so even tiniest mistake is easy to hear. Horowitz was a Leviathan. Live. Hells bells.
Reference,,,,definitive, historic,,,,....beguiling! Is that Wanda next to V.? first photo with a long tie...." historic"(😄) at his most relaxed. Also? :" historic" ???? WONDERFUL MUSIC-MAKING!
Thank you. Interesting to compare with Sony recordings of the 60s and others. There are significant differences. I didn't know Horowitz had ever played the Sonata K.46. (The Sonata in B minor K.87 is actually L.33).

K87 and L33 are the same sonata. Longo was not the only one to catalogue Scarlatti’s sonatas; Kirkpatrick did it as well.
Il est clair qu’Horowitz excellait dans ces sonates de Scarlatti où il se noyait avec délice.
How does the g major so fast? What an artist
It is a shame he never (as far as I know) recorded the C sharp minor, K 247/L 256 sonata.
Who is the other person with Horowitz?

Perdon....la numero me recuerda al Padre Soler....
His interpretations in his 1960s studio recorded Scarlatti LP are an improvement on these performances. Crisper, more elegant and classically restrained yet with equal color and virtuosity. Too much of the Romantic/daemonic here.
