I'm brand new to VR and although I'm a 46 year old IT professional by trade, was still overwhelmed by the minefield that is Quest 2 and PCVR coordinated setup. Your videos have been invaluable. I'm just off to play with these suggestions myself but wanted to drop you a formal thank you.

I'm also a 46 yr old IT workhorse (but have done vr testing from oculus rift upwards ect test vr networking for myself and customers) and found 'perfecting' (tinkering) for decent vr performance was more of a nightmare than installing a new network for a small hospital sometimes 😂 Definitely the number 1 move is to have a (cheap £40 wifi 6) dedicated router for a wifi vr headset with nothing else connected to it. Lock the vr router to the least congested 80mhz only channel (Dfs channel if you don't live right next to an airport or weather station) and the both the quest 2 and pico 4 perform really well. It's surprising how well so called 'weak cards' perform. Vram really helps with VR over gpu clock speed I've found.

Thanks for such a great video. Bought Virtual Desktop as nothing else worked well. Game changer. Love it so far.

Virtual Desktop is my daily driver for both Quest 2 and Pico 4. "It just works" as Todd would say. It's truly amazing what a single developer can do by himself if he's really deep diving into the technical possibilities of the hardware. Although there are two features missing in the app, which i think would make it even better. a) Folders and Favourites in the Games Tab plus the last four to eight used games on top. I have about 100 games on STEAM and Oculus, mostly playing 2-3 of them regularly, and scrolling down all the time to find them is pretty annoying. I would be happy if at least the last couple of games i have started would be listed on top. b) specific settings for different games to be set automatically when you start a game through the "Games"-Tab and depending on the PC you play with. The settings can be very individual for many games. No Man's Sky for instance does require totally different settings than Half Life Alyx or First Person Tennis. On a RTX 3070 you can play Tennis at 120Hz in the highest Quality without SSW, whereas for No Man's Sky you need to go down below 90Hz with SSW switched on. SSW will increase response time of the game, so for all sports or fast paced games SSW should be turned off (if possible). I know this feature would be quite complicated to implement in the app, because you need to find a way to select PC and Game and then apply the settings and all of this should not be too confusing. And that is not an easy task to do and maybe nobody really needs this anyway 🙂 A quick question at this point: Does anyone have the same isuee, that every time the PC restarts the Virtual Streamer settings get lost ? This happens on only one PC (of four) and if i restart this one i have to enter profile names and set my settings every time. I have tried to reinstall everything but nothing helped. I could not get an answer in the official Discord forum. Anyway, maybe someone knows what's wrong.

It’s a good guide. I used your original guide to set my quest 2 up. That said, when it comes to fps I find it’s a bit of a minefield. I have an RTX3060 and Ryzen 5. I find the best settings the are at 60fps. It doesn’t seem to cope well with much more. That’s said, a steady 60fps is nice. This is the one thing I like about my PSVR2.. I don’t have to mess with settings.. I just have to find the sweet spot every time I use it, put up with the annoying roomscale (I have guardian off on my quest) put up with an annoying cable that needs to be looked after like the Crown Jewels, put up with Muira, put up with the uncomfortable strap and light bleed. Other than that it’s great 😂 Think I’ll have to get a quest three. Can’t have all my eggs in the PlayStation basket. My quest 2 still works fine but the controllers (still on the original set since it was released) are getting tired.

Fantastic!! Thanks. I got a quest 2 for Christmas. Setup Virtual desktop yesterday and tried flight sim. It was ok but graphics weren't that sharp and was getting lower frame rates. I have an i7 6850k, 32gb of ram, 6650 xt graphics card and my router is in the same room. Today I followed your settings and wow does it look and run great! I'm now getting 60-70fps in flight sim and it's amazing!

what about recording some games with gpu encoder or with obs in 60fps? is there any interference when selecting 90fps in virtual destkop settings or is obs or virtual desktop "balancing" the frames then? Best :)

Just bought VD and set it exactly as told. Works perfectly! This is insane. Getting unbelievable quality graphics wirelessly from my gaming PC. Even Half-Life 2 VR mod works. Oh man, good times ahead! I will make sure and recommend to anyone I hear who wants to use this app to play PC games on their Oculus.

@@MacInVR Thanks Mac. I see “5G/400 Mbps” in amber on the VD overlay, and only get up to 130 Mbps even if I select H.264+ and bump the bitrate up. Does that mean that my WiFi limits my bitrate, or is it the 3080Ti, or is both?

If you're only getting 400mbps from your 5ghz channel, sounds like your wifi is congested. Wifi 5 up to 866mbps Wifi 6 up to 1200mbps Wifi 6e up to 2400mbps Trying pass word protecting your 5ghz channel and see if that gets rid of everything connected. Your PC setup doesn't affect the transfer rate 😉

I really like VD over Air Link since it obviously provides much more control over the VR streaming. My only complaint would be that the volume with it, is way too low in my case compared to Air Link, and there is no way to increase it. If you have a suggestion for that, I wouldn't even consider Air Link anymore. Great video BTW! I'll update my settings right now!

You have to adjust the headsets volume, volume is independent of VD.

I found something that helps a lot. I checked "Use virtual audio driver" in the VD streamer options, which wasn't checked in my case.

So for somer reason VD will use whatever the volume is set to on your PC, you just have to turn that up

great video as always. I have a new build and didn't download oculus pc app this time round and works without.

I find the oculus app to be lacking. Won't let me cast to my laptop. For some reason it won't detect it for casting but works for everything else. Virtual desktop works all round and feels much better.

Good on ya man , not the easiest thing . Still lose patience too much to deal with complications I run into . Hoping quest 3 is helpful but dyslexia , add , and well a lot else has me ready koolaid man through wall in seconds lol .

You must get the latest versions before us here in Australia, as i can only find 1.26. Will follow this guide when it's available to us..

I just bought Virtual Desktop for Quest 3 and was disappointed because it did not look better than Air Link or Steam Link. After I followed this guide, the image looks way smoother and cleaner. Thank you!

I've been fidling around a lot with my router and vd settings, just cant get it to run stutter free somehow. Sometimes it works flawlessly with certain router channels, lower seems better for me. But it mostly works for a brief period and then gets back to lagging and stuttering. the VD overlay tells me most of the time its my network spiking out and causing the lag. I've beenn suspecting my lan cables to maybe be the issue, have you had any experience in difference of Cat5e, CAT6 or seven? i've defaulted back to wired at the moment with my pico 4 since I cant pinpoint the issue. Also altough this is a great tutorial video, I seem to get way better performance with almost completly different settings. I use a T-Plink Archer AX 50 wifi6 router at 80mhz 5ghz band ax only which should easily get the job done. Is it possible that my router is running out of cpu pef. or memory, or maybe overheats due to all the traffic going through it? Kinda running out of ideas by now...

All comments I have seen on the snapdragon VSR thing say you see no difference if you are on 3070 and above, only see a difference on lower spec cards as to be expected.

I'm on the Virtual Desktop support team. You don't need the Oculus app unless you own or intend to own Oculus store apps. Virtual Desktop does not need or use any component of the Oculus PC app. I haven't watched the whole video but was pointed here to the timestamp by one of our users.

thank god. the oculus app makes 2d games microstutter and gives my mouse input lag because of the always running processes. really wish they would fix that. i've confirmed it was the app multiple times over the past year optimizing my pc. every time i install it my games run like crap, uninstall it and everything is good again. even did a clean install of windows and tried it, same thing

!!! I have been using virtual desktop for a long time and I find it great for all purposes. If you experience any issues with streaming, you can simply turn off HDR on your computer. !!!!

So the virtual desktop app is only for wireless connection to your vr headset?

oof... I wouldn't recommend force enabling Space Warping - it basically halves your framerate and creates very distinct ghosting. It is much better to lower resolution to medium but achieve more stable framerate. Video nominal range is also bad due to loss of details

It doesn't cause ghosting in every game and I do recommend that if you do see ghosting, then turn it off

I have voicemeeter and see the Voicemeeter mode under option/audio streaming. I can't find any info about what this does. Does anyone know?

I've recently bought the Tp Link AX10 Wifi 6 router, which is tethered to my pc and I STILL get nowhere near 1200mb/s? I really don't know what to do anymore, I'm literally sitting 30cm away from my tethered designated Acces Point router connected to the pc and the modem. Any tips?

Hi, i was wondering if you can help me with problem, I was looking at your video, I just bought oculus quest 3 and I install vr desktop as you said. When I look at my desktop and computer everything is crystal clear, but as soon as I activate vr in the desktop (stream vr) in the room of stream vr, the quality of the video is not very nice (blurry) and when I’m turning my head left or right, the line makes waves. Since I install stream vr, I saw a graphic card in the system, do I have to do something about it… and since that installation when I open msfs, the writing is not clear… Thank you and have a nice day

Thanks for the great video just got my meta quest 2 and was running so bad with link cable and the meta app was telling me my pc did not meet the spec tho it has a ryzen 5700x , rtx 4060 and 32gb of ram it was leaving my games running so bad and crashing out after playing for 5-10mins but just setup virtual desktop and been flying around for the last 2hrs on microsoft flight simulator with great fps and 0 crash's

What do I put in under "Viveport ID"? I realize this may sound like an dumb question but does it need to be different then the Oculus Username?

Why do you buy the app in the headset but run the windows app? Seems a step was skipped. So the 'server'/streamer is in windows and the 'client' is on the headset right? And the streamer is free?..

Super Rez doesn't give a 2080ti 4090 image quality sadly to say. But a 4090 will :-p Joking aside SuperRez is a nice new addition to make the image more clear. I believe Oculus have used their own spin on it for awhile via link cable but now they all use Snap Dragons method to my knowledge.

What codec should you use with the 40 series GPUs since they support AV1, I don’t believe they support as high biterate as the one you recommended though

Recommended that you use the AV1 10-bit codec for 40 series gpu's. It goes up to 200mbps and it's what I currently use since upgrading to a 4080

Why does my deskop on my pc change to 1080 after running VD? My screen res is 1440p ? And are the VD running 1080 then? How to change ? Thx

I use VD and love it, when I first tried it, it was far better than the alternatives (like air link), but I'd like to go back and try them out and see if they've improved, could you make a video on best settings for those too?

Do you adjust your resolution through SteamVR or is it purely done through picking the setting related to your GPU in the Desktop app? Games look like they are running it a much lower resolution than they were with Air link, I picked the high setting for the 3070.

Hey man, I love the simplicity of it all, but I'm a goshdarn idiot when it comes to this. I remember using this back like a year ago but for some reason my frame rate went all to hell and I deleted virtual desktop

I've done pretty much everything setting it up to prefection, but the problem I've got I can't see the gameplay vile OBS..

Help, i cant get the VR Bitrate above 177, i have the right codec like you, but when i raise the deep blue bar its stuck at about 50% with 177 and anything higher is only light blue and bitrate stays at 177 ???

My VD on my PC is only at version 1.26.6 and when I click on "Check for updates", it says there are no updates. Why?

What about the settings i. The oculus app, debug tool and steam vr? So many places to tweak stuff like super sampling. I'm confused and no tutorial covers everything.

Is there any way of forcing a zoom. Some of the screens for viewing videos are either really large... like sitting too close to a screen at a theatre... or sometimes one wants a larger screen instead of seeing all much of the room.

You can resize the screens, it's one of the buttons on the left controller that brings up a menu above the VD home page 🤔

It's incorporated directly by Qualcomm so I think it doesn't affect performance too much 🤔

Nice one Mac, VD is a real quality piece of software and seems to receive new features at an incredible rate. However, there is one game I have to use quest airlink for still which is SkyrimVR. This is because using OpenComposite appears to give me around 20fps more and VD does not support it yet. Are you aware of any VD trick I'm missing in this situation?

Hi Mac. Random question. As of now. U and I use wifi 6e. I’m on Asus and u on tp link axe75. Does your bit rate on virtual desktop stay at 2401 constant or does it occasionally drop to about 1700mbs for a split second and back to 2401. Mine does :( wifi 5 is constant 2401 but it plays virtual desk laggy! Think to many on the 5g. Last question u have perfect wifi bars? I stand right next to it and it goes off n on loosing 1 bar. Be nice to know how yours is compared to mine good friend :)❤

It does fluctuate, but I think it's not the router, maybe VD or the Quest itself. Are you running your router in access point mode? Only do this if it's a router dedicated to VD

Try turning off the other router (unplug) while playing. Might fix it.

Just open the "Performance Overlay" and crank everything up till it starts to fail, then dial it back. Have a good fiddle, you can't break anything and just reset to default if it goes wrong.

10 months on, Pico Connect is absolutely crushing VD for me?

Does anyone have a hard time running Stormland well even with high end PC and dedicated router? My latency hovers around 40 to 50ms but I still get this horrible 'bordering' effect as if the screen cant keep up with the movement of my head. Also i still get when I'm out in the main game open worlds horrible artefacting as if its compression algorithms are not great.

I really would like to know if you could set specific settings per game rather than having to change them. I can run something like beat saber in godlike but half life alyx I would run on high. Also, why no video buffering?

Airlink is Meta's wireless gaming solution and VD is a paid for wireless solution. Meta have kind of abandoned Airlink but VD gets regular performance and quality of life updates. I prefer VD because it is more flexible, with more options to tweak how you want to play (eg latency over graphical fidelity). As for performance, they are pretty similar to be fair.

You keep saying wireless. But can this also be done with a Link cable? Or will this only work wirelessly?

Thanks for your guides. One question, please help. I read that VD version 1.7.x now uses openxr. Does that mean that we have to switch to oculus/Openxr runtime in StesmVR? Since the update, my VR performance has been terrible, compared to previous version. Everything is jumping all over the place, and the steam overlay is visible in VR for some reason. Everything was perfect before the update. I just need to know if it due to the runtime change. Thanks.

V54 Oculus software update caused loads of problems for VD, that might be the problem. My advice at the moment is to open steam on desktop, start a game from there and select "run in steam vr mode". Just until Meta get their act together 🙄

Keep the runtime in SteamVR, only switch if you're playing Oculus PC VR (which they seem to have abandoned) 🤔

You'd have to buy it for Quest and Pico but once you own it, it will stay in your library if you upgrade to new hardware (Quest 1,2 & 3 for example).

I have vd on quest 2, n now i own pico 4, should i buy vd for pico too? Or i can share from my quest 2?

Ok I have 1 more question…. Got it all setup and working great trouble is when I try to run games that are installed from the windows oculus app from Virtual desktop it opens them games on a 2d screen? If I play games directly from steam vr installed from steam they work fine do you know why this is happening?

its just the way vr desktop works, it needs to the load the game either from vr desktop menu or steam vr menu otherwise it just plays in a 2d screen

for some reason with those settings i can only get 57Mbps bitrate with H.264+ enabled

Even since i updated to quest v54 VD HAS MAJOR LAG SPIKES , I tried every updated VD , delete and redowmload both on vd steamer and quest app, factory reset my head set 2 times, check my internet provider , all is good there no other device has this problem, i tried oculus air link same issues , i will say the factory reset did help the 2nd time olny for a little bit bit then the lag started again , i done everything in this video as well

To do a Soft Reset: 1. Go into the Oculus app on your phone and tap on settings, is the Quest showing as connected? 2. Power the Quest off completely 3. Plug in the charger 4. At the same time press power and volume up at the same time for 2 seconds 5. This should bring up an menu in the headset [then some incorrect info which I am replacing with how I found the setting] hold down power and volume up again if it says No Command, at which point a list should pop up 6. Choose Reboot to Bootloader 7. Choose Sideload Update, and your Quest 2 display will go dark, don't worry, it is just performing a reset. With a Soft Reset, you do not lose any files. Once it turns back on, go to Settings>About>and it should have a button saying 'Start Update' or 'Update Available' click that, and you are set! The lastest update completely fixed the stutters for me.

@@kidblaze210 Did you see the reply about updating to version v55? I can't see my comment on my side so I'll put it here again. Before you do the soft reset, you need to toggle the public test channel by going into the Oculus app on your computer or phone through settings -> beta -> public test channel. Then you can do the steps for the soft reset if you don't see the update appear in your headset. Once you update, you'll know you're on v55 if your version number starts with 55

For me SSW enabled gave me BAD performance outcome. I guess it's diff for some settings.

Mac how did you get version 1.27.1 for the streaming app? When I download it from the website, it is version 1.67 ?? ... even after hitting the update button in the app it says "no update available". I play on Pico 4. Please help 🙏

I have this issue on my Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop which is whenever I load into a game the left and right eye are not synced which makes this very weird effect

@@MacInVRi have an AMD Ryzen 5 5600H CPU, 8GB of RAM and I'm running Windows 11, my graphics card is an AMD Radeon RX 6500M connected with ethernet to my router which is just an average virgin media one but it has a 5ghz connection

Adjust your IPD. Move the eyepieces around. See if that helps.

Can i play through virtual desktop quest 2 apps/games ?

Hello, noob question. Can i use virtual desktop Via cable connection? I dont have good internet connection and i want to play non vr games. I dont mind cable

There is absolutely no point in using VD with a cable, just use the cable 😉

The new quest 3 doesn’t appear in the oculus app software to download. Can I download the quest 2 instead and will that work ok?

Cyberpunk is a tough ask for any PC, even my 4080 struggles. Maybe try a less demanding game, then try again once you've got used to using VD 🤔

Should I fiddle with any of the in game graphics setting as well?

Yes, depending on your GPU spec. Get it running as best as possible then let VD do the rest

For some odd reason... i suddenly experienced some weird behaviour in VR: 10-20 seconds of smooth gameplay, then 2-3 seconds of stutter and back 10-20 seconds of smooth gameplay... i was looking for the cause for days! tried a wifi6 dongle... doesn't work, changed some settings on the router and removed some devices from it, QoS and prioritize Quest 2 and Pc.. still issues... ensured no antivirus was attacking both steam and VD... Made sure GPU scheduling was off, made sure high performance gpu was set to both steamvr and VD... and yet it all persisted.. tried various settings in VD.. HEVS or H.264... same results.. only then would the stutter be either from gpu or cpu respectively... and after all that.... it was VD itself... Air Link was smooth as butter... And now as it turns out... Sliced encoding setting was removed from VD... i wonder if that could have an effect.... but in the end... i now have to rely on Air Link... which i don't really like...

Best thing to do is buy a cheap wifi6 router and set it up as a dedicated access point, password protect the 5ghz channel and use it exclusively for Quest & Pico. That should solve all your problems 😋

@@MacInVR It was on a dedicated wifi6 router... contacted VD... it appears that a network bug in v54 is the culprit, and it hasn't been patched out in v55 (PTC)..

hi mac i just got the version 1.27.4 but my oculus head unit in vd will not connect cos it needs to update to marry up to latest version of desktop streamer.....any ideas?
