This album for me is an absolute classic without any duff tracks, In my opinion it's one of if not thee best debut album ever. I still play it all the time. "Sleeping pills" & "Animal nitrate" still give me goosebumps everytime. An absolute corker of an album.

I remember my first exposure to Suede. I was about to go to work and the US version of the Drowners video came on MTV and I was spellbound. Beyond the video being amazing that sound, Bernard's unapologetic use of those power chords with Brett's vocals over it was the catchiest thing I'd heard in years. One of those times where you hear a song and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. That album, that sound, that image was sorely needed at that time. And I dare anyone to find a trifecta like Suede, Dog Man Star, and Coming Up. They haven't toured the US in decades but I was lucky enough to see them twice on the first US tour for Suede and twice on the Dog Man Star US Tour. And fwiw Richard Oakes is extremely underrated.

Great interview. Have to disagree with Brett on Animal Lover, though. Great song (let’s face it, there are no weak tracks on this album) and I think it is really important in terms of sequencing, building the album to a crescendo before that big final shift of dynamics into The Next Life.

Wrong, Animal Lover is a fantastic song. It really makes the record sit well within the time frame it was created. Brett get over that tune. It's a power house. It really showcases the bands rock side. Not quite a single like Drowners, but anything too heavy would have spoiled the broth of that record. It's just what the record needed right at that moment and it gives way to the depth of a great closer. It's like one last cocktail before we have to say farewell to a great party.

Apparently Brett says he never liked how it came out live when the band played it...Which makes sense it has a lot of layers of guitars. If the band was a two guitar band it would probably sound better live. I can play this tune from beginning to end and I think it can be done with one guitarist but I am pretty sure that is where Brett is drawing his response to the tune. But for me it's one of their best songs, plus it never gets on my nerves. Can't say that about the Wild One's anymore. Even though it is the best song they ever wrote.

Good point, I always saw that song as a deep little ditty. Kinda like the opposite side of the coin of Animal Lover. It is Animal Lovers opposite song. Which makes that second side so cool. Drowners, Breakdown, Metal Mickey are the Hits Sleeping Pills, Animal Lover and The Next Life the perfect low key tunes to give the album its depth, its dynamics. They got it right. Anything else would have been unthinkable but not appalling. So I am glad they made these decisions. I would have made the same call if I were them. It turned out perfect. They were consistent for their first five releases. The Police were the same and they stopped before they delivered something that was not up to par. Suede should have taken a break at New Morning or at least, stuck to their guns and made an all acoustic record, which is what they were going to do but lost their nerve. If New Morning was acoustic, it could have been rather interesting as a maneuver. But hey, they are still great. I still love them. Even Bernie.

reethkitchards it wasn’t the same after dog man star for me. Anderson and Butler were suede. The 3rd album was ok, great singles, but I thought they lost their way after that. I suppose Brit pop was fading. The Verve, Coldplay and Muse were the new indie darlings.

I once met someone whose favourite song was Animal Love. He was a vegetarian, go figure. I'm relieved to hear Brett is dismissive of that song because it was the point in the record for me when the songwriting started to sound a bit formulaic . Particularly Brett's vocal melodies, very predictable and throw away.
