Not only are they the best band. But they are the best band of brothers. This is clear during the good times. And also the very worst of times. They continue to grow and change with the times. They all are very sexy. Joe takes the lead in sexy with his vocals and his obvious sexy looks. Keep going guys. We need you.

They are the true definition of what a band should be about. No egos just mates. You won’t get a band as big as Def leppard as down to earth.

The thing I love about this interview the most is what fans they so evidently still are of bands like Queen and T-Rex, with the desire to compare themselves in the same way teenage garage bands do. Nice to see.

Def Leppard’s golden era was from Pyromania(1983) to Retro Active (1993). I wish they had more than Hysteria and Adrenalize in between, but of course Rick and Steve had their tragedies.

@wildcatter63 Yeah. Viv's an honest guy. Seen some of his more recent interviews and he's full of praise for Steve. Steve was the guy that got me to pick up the guitar after I bought the In The Round video. Still remember how I found out he'd died. They definitely lost something that day. But I do feel sorry for Viv sometimes. It must be a thankless task being in a band where the fans are still talking about the guy you've replaced as if you're just a session musician. But he puts up with it with good grace.

What is awful about it? You may want to stop comparing one album to another and appreciate each album on its' own. Slang was way different than anything Def Leppard ever did. It definitely isn't the party album you got in Pyromania or Hysteria. It has much more mature lyrics and more introspective. It still has the Leppard sound though-unmistakable layered melodies, guitars etc. Sometimes an artist has to think out of the box. They took a chance. Commercially, it didn't do so well. But artistically, it is a triumph.

Wow, what a great interview. Kudos to Jamie East for not banging on about Pete, or Rick or Steve and just getting on with the music. Lovely insights from Joe and Phil. What a great work ethic this band has. I was about 17/18 yrs old when Hysteria came out and (if you're not of this age) you have to think about the peers at that time too, to realise what the record was competing against: Bon Jovi had Slippery when wet, Europe: The Final Countdown, Aerosmith were scoring big with Permanent Vacation, Van Halen's 5150. The Crue had Dr Feelgood(?) and Poison had Open up and say Ahhh. Whitesnakes self titled album (or 1987), Maiden's Somewhere in Time, Queen's A Kind of Magic and Heart's resurgence with Bad Animals. And then there were the others that I can't remember right now. I do remember rumblings of an up and coming band called Guns and Roses about to premier their debut album; Appetite for Destruction. All competing for the same airtime - all scored big, fat, juicy hits. I cannot explain what an absolutely fantastic time it was to be a hard rock fan in the mid-late eighties...

The total respect and gratitude they had for Mutt is there to see. Hysteria was my gateway album into rock and, later, metal. I'd heard Animal on Top of the Pops and thought it was decent. Then I was sat in my mum's car waiting for the job centre to open and I heard Pour Some Sugar on Me for the first time on the car radio. Blew me away and, like many others, bought it on the strength of that song. Listened to at least one song on the album every day for about 5 years!!

NO QUESTION! -- This interviewer guy simply MUST BE the editor or director of this (or perhaps his lover[?]) because I cannot believe how long the camera stays on him as they are speaking. During 'Animal' Joe E. is speaking for half-of-a-minute or more and the shot remains on Dr.Interviewer Guy, Esq.

What Phil and Joe say about recording a single string at a time - as an example, the original Roland guitar synth had a "hex fuzz" effect. Each string had it's own pickup so the hex fuzz was a unit that that had one fuzz unit for each string which were then mixed (summed) into a single output. If you had had the 6 strings being summed and then going into a single fuzz unit, all the different notes & harmonics generated by each string would cause the output to sound like mush, when they're processed individually and then mixed together, they sound absolutely huge!

The Pyromania drum sound was essentially everything apart from the cymbals was the Fairlight and Rick played the cymbals. When Leppard recorded Pyromania in 1982, probably the only other people in the UK using the Fairlight were the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and Peter Gabriel (there's a great his 4th South Bank Show where it shows him using the Fairlight and the Linn Drum for his 4th album - and I'm sure a few bits and bobs were stolen for Brian Pern from that)

No offense Joe but queensryche does their own harmonies too.. Geoff is supported by degarmo Jackson and wilton, and they can both shout sing and naturally sing too. But I do agree that this type of sound is rare in heavy metal from 80s. But I do give you credit that def can tap into a pop audience which is largely ignored by ryche.

25+ million in the biggest hardest market the US alone. Hysteria achieved the same 25+ Diamond. Only Van Halen can match these figures with 2 records also Diamond in the US. Phil is nowhere near as wealthy as he only played on the record after Pete was sacked but Pete Willis received his royalties from the band rightly as he co wrote some songs but it was the lyrical, musical genius of this band 'The Riffmaster' who was the real reason for this record's epic status - 'and' the genius of Robert 'Mutt' Lange. Steve's arguably pinnacle performance live is here at this gig, mind blowing stuff. Steve really did have it all. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gayEmLyfYNa7pco.html
