    Glad to see your review. I just yesterday was on their site and actually put the mini in my cart to checkout, for a sale price of $60. However, after that it said shipping was going to be another $40 for a total of $100 so I decided to hold off for now. Thanks for your review.

    Interesting stove Mark, I like the concept! I have not considered a rocket stove before, due to their bulkiness, but they were not a folding design. I'm looking forward to your full review, and compare your findings to the big brother Vire.

    Presumably, the secret with this is using the feed-door and slightly shorter sticks to manage the air draw as it’s all a bit short? It would force the draw through a smaller opening and therefore a greater velocity and maintain the ‘rocket’ function - especially when the pot is on?

    I know the sole purpose of this channel is to show me lots of cool stoves and confuse the heck out of me on what to buy next, but not this time my friend......not this time. 😃 The mini is much more usable than the full size, but something I don't like about them. I do love that you take the time to learn how to use stoves and give them several tries before you do a proper review. There are so many channels that do a "review" when they haven't even learned how to use them. It can be frustrating trying to find a good, honest review.

    Hey Jim. Its my job to separate you from your hard earned money😂. I starting to think this really cannot be called a rocket stove but more testing to come. Any more thought on what you are going to buy?

    Mark Young lol, I knew you had it in for me! I'll probably stick with what works and stay with firebox, and get the little brother to my gen 2. I liked the bushbox you reviewed recently, but if it's going to warp every time I do something like a fire torch, then I'm thinking more about the nano. Especially since I plan on using it as a pot stand for my Trangia probably as much as a stick stove. Have you ever looked at the bushbox lite? Anyway, I'm not getting anything till spring, so there's lots of time to decide. And lots of time to see your review......if you ever get around to it. 🙂

    I don't understand why they didn't make every aspect smaller instead of just making it shorter. I'm happy I purchased the larger stove. I would love to see a comparison of the two stoves working side by side.

    Great video as always, Mark! I wonder if the "mini" part of this rocket stove is the reason it worked as well as it did. As you say, a lot of rocket stoves lose heat out the sides of the chimney. With a shorter chimney, this one has less distance for the heat loss to hapoen, so it may be able to retain the heat generated a little more efficiently. I'll be looking forward to your full review!

    I agree the chimney and feed ramp may be too short to really have the rocket stove effect. More testing to come. Thank you for commenting

    Would be nice to see this come in a titanium option to save weight. Wondering what the burn time on one of these would be before ash build up chokes up the flow and function.

    Titanium would be interesting for sure. I will be sure to test out how long before it clogs up. So far, the efficient burn seems to leave less ash. Thanks for commenting

    There is something about the way it draws oxygen into the chamber that just doesn't seem right. I'm wondering if there should be a few more breather holes near the top or at least the sides of the chimney however, the way it roars when it gets going even with some smoke seems (as another comment suggested) that perhaps it needs a higher pot stand or adjustable pot stand. Thanks Mark.

    It was enjoyable to watch this video. I wonder how it will work with sticks and wood gathered in the field. It looks like you had the perfect fuel there. It’s not likely we would have that kind of dry split wood in the camp site. What do you think? Maybe you could try it with field gathered sticks? Thank you for all your videos. This is the time of year I have time and the right climate for outdoor play here in Mississippi

    You have a good point. The wood I burn I gather from dead standing in my immediate area but it is dry and split. I will be sure to show using just sticks and twigs when I do the full review. Thank you for commenting

    Nice, Mark. I’m finding rocket stoves are a bit different in getting started, but once going, a hot meal and hot beverage can be prepared fairly quickly. I wonder how the stove would do with higher crosspieces, with double the width to increase the clearance between the stove and the pot or pan? Likely much less smoke. My Virestove has yet to be used in subzero temps, so your video is a good reminder for me to explore that path. Thank you!

    Hi Mark, Thank you for this overview, I meant to buy this stove but they sent the full sized one by mistake. Are you planning on giving us an update on the Vire in winter? I haven't had much luck with mine. On cold, windy days, it never got hot enough to boil water. I had to break out my old, reliable Biolite.

    Those pot supports definitely need to be taller. There's not enough space under the pot for the flame to escape, which is one of the unfortunate limitations of wood stoves: the majority of the heat generated is lost to the air. Most stoves work better if the flame is protected from wind. To be effective, the windscreen on most wood stoves would have to be taller than me top of the stove to shield the flame, but far enough away from the stove to ensure good air flow underneath (it would, of course, need vent holes down low. The Vire stoves would both need massive (relatively heavy) windscreens. The lightest effective material for the windscreen would be titanium (expensive), or aluminum (easily deformed and possibly melted by the flame).

    Windscreen? What are you talking about? The fire here is enclosed. The whole stove is a natural windscreen:

    Yes, I also feel the pot supports should be taller. I agree all stoves benefit from a windscreen. That is why I had it in the fire pit. Thank you for commenting

    @@markcummings6856 A windscreen extending above the stove body, shielding the flame - preventing the wind from blowing it away from the pot, which prevents optimum heating. Cooking stoves should be good at more than just heating air.

    The dimensions of that stove preclude it being correctly labeled a "rocket" stove. The amount of fire and smoke coming out of the over-sized feed chamber, relative to the riser, is just one example. The air gaps and very short riser ensure there will be no secondary combustion, which also disqualifies this small stove from truly being a "rocket" stove. It's basically a short vertical burn chamber with a horizontal feed option. I'm not saying it doesn't make for an effective way to cook stuff while in the bush, but it's definitely not a rocket stove, per se.

  • @MarkYoungBushcraft

    @MarkYoungBushcraft

    I agree this is not a true rocket stove. The original is closer but still does not have an insulated chimney. More testing needed on this stove. Thank you for commenting

  • @vensheaalara
    @vensheaalara3 жыл бұрын

    Sadly, rocket stoves work best with a longer chimney that is also insulated. The "rocket" effect is vastly enhanced with a proper burn chamber/chimney setup. What you have is really more of a semi-feeding wood stove.

  • @MarkYoungBushcraft

    Yes, I agree. In fairness to the company, they don't call it a rocket stove, just a mini VIRE stove, which is more of a rocket stove. Thanks for commenting

    Looked like a winner until the cookpot was placed on the pot stand & the smoke ensued. I'll bet if the pot stand stood a little taller the smoke wouldn't be much of an issue.
