Vintage Rolex 6426 OP Oyster Precision Review

Finally, I finished my review of my late father's Vintage Rolex 6426 OP Oyster Precision. A birth year watch from 1974, perhaps the slimmest version of the timeless OP style from Rolex. The epitome and bare essence of all you could ever really need from a Rolex watch.

    Beautiful piece. I just purchased a 1959 Oyster Datejust 6694 -- love the clean, simplicity.

    It looks absolutely identical to my 1968 Rolex Air King 5500. It was my fathers and I've worn it daily since 1990. It goes with everything, suits, jeans etc. Nice and understated, but real classy and the highest of quality. I absolutely love it and I've never considered buying anything else.

    My stepdad has an Air King.. not sure of the ref, but, it also looks near identical to this one. But, having looked at it closer recently, it may not have any lume and maybe some black details on the indexes.

    I also have a 6426 (1973) and have recently taken it off its bracelet and wear it on NATO’s or leather straps, mainly because I have other watches on Oyster bracelets and the OP looks great on almost any watch strap. Great watches and a great entry point to Rolex (I’ve since bought another Rolex but a modern 36mm blue dialled OP which will stay on the Oyster bracelet.)

    Very Nice. Just picked up the same watch but a 1970. love the clean classy classic design. Goes with anything from a t-shirt and jeans to a suit.

    Beautiful watch! I have this same watch, only 1972 with silver linen dial. Mercifully, my bracelet has screws. It runs +/- 2 seconds per day. Which IMHO is on par with modern mechanical watches, but at a fraction of the cost. It's last service was 4 years ago. The power reserve was stated to be 52 hours but it stops intermittently after 50 hours in my testing, so 2 days is about spot on. Rolex will not relume the watch btw. Great job with the lume and keeping it vintage green. I may follow your lead and relume mine :)

    Awesome, I know slime one selling the same size model. What do you think is a fair price to pay

    I don't personally find these have been worth nearly as much as other Rolex models. Depending on condition and what it includes, I'd say safe starting price for just the watch in fair condition might be under $2k. As I was looking around a couple years ago to gauge the value, they seem to be asking around $2k. Times may have changed and Rolex prices generally go up over time it seems, even at the lower end. I feel the thing holding this one back isn't necessarily that it is manual wind only. It's nice it keeps it one of the thinner OPs. But, it is also a screwdown crown. So, I think it's not such a great idea to constantly have to srew & unscrew the crown to manually wind it which it will inevitably need about every 2 days or so. There's just going to be more wear and tear on the crown and compromise what little WR it may still have. If it's only going to be an occasional watch to wear and forget water resistance, then that should be fine for that kind of occasional wear.

    @@khronokraze in your honest opinion do you think it wears small?

  • @khronokraze

    @khronokraze

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@leomedina5614 yes, of course it does. The thing about it and any watch that is significantly smaller or larger than what I would say is my "normal" case size range is it only takes a few little time to give such watches an honest chance to look right out normal on wrist, again. The moment I make a jump from sat a 40mm to a 34mn, there will be a visual proportion shock initially. But, as I wear it and don't compare it directly to the larger watches I normally wear, it becomes ok and seems to fit and look right on wrist. Of course, everyone's wrist size and shape and what they feel comfortable wearing will vary.

    @@khronokraze You know it’s funny you say that because I have a vintage omega 135.041 and it’s a 34mm but it wears bigger then it’s actual size. Seems like for the most part most vintage pieces wear great on the wrist for many people

    I recently came into possession of my father's 6426 champagne dial steel bracelet Oyster precision Rolex 1964 (vintage). What is its nominal or current value? The hands, dial, and case have some minor corrosion but it still winds and works.

    No idea? I don't really follow Rolex market too closely. This one for example when I was looking wasn't particularly expensive. Around $2k +/-.
