As a young boy I was always fascinated by the mechanical movements of various watches, that curiosity has grown well into my adult years to the point it has developed into a hobby.

Every watch carries the story of it's previous owner(s). I like to wear a vintage watch and think of their lives, how they loved the watch, and how it faithfully kept time for them. I love the watch now, and it's faithful of me, and hopefully there will be someone after me!

I love that watches are small pieces of engineering that are reflections of time and your life all in one package. It's there for you to see... a masterwork of human engineering. The watch is reminiscent of us and also how time will never cease, as long as we care for it... it will care for us. It's a mirror of spirit in a way.

When I was 7 yrs old, my grandfather passed away. He left in my possession a old and broken Frank Holt & CO pocket watch that his father had given to him. That was the beginning of my love affair with watches. I am not sure if its the watches themselves I love so much or the pure facination with the movements that make a watch possible. I will say I finally was able to find someone to fully restore the watch years ago and It puts a smile on my face everytime I wind it and hear that tic..tic..tic. One day I will hand it over to my son, along with all the stories the watch carries with it.

Always nice to have a family story with watches

Watches, why do I love them? I am an engineer by trade and have always been fascinated by engineering mechanisms and watch making is essentially engineering in miniature. I was taught to tell the time as a school boy with a Smiths mechanical watch and have never been without a watch on my wrist ever since. I am now retired and dabble with my own watches and I am currently making a skeleton clock. Keep up the excellent videos. Terry

Funny to see that we have similar points of interest for watches

I love watches because they offer a glimpse into the past. The timeless, apologies for the pun, machinery that works tirelessly day in and day out. A nearly self contained system, requiring only the motion of the wrist to maintain operation. In a sense, they’re almost like small living entity, themselves. They are engineering marvels and their repairability is refreshing, in such a throw away world. Plus, the fact that so many people don’t wear mechanical watches, makes it all the more interesting to wear them myself. I’ve begun my own watch repair/watchmaking journey, this past year. Thanks for the lovely, and illuminating videos.

I love watches, quartz, mechanical you name it. I love watch making, watch repair, and watch smithing but mostly talking, sharing, and learning all about watch history, both new and old. I’ve always been fascinated by how intricate parts can run as a tiny machine that delivers the service of time (and calendar) keeping. Also, a watch is man using math, the closest thing to perfection we have, to support the concept of time, also a man made invention.

I can't pinpoint why I love watches in a single bullet point... 1. I especially love watches because they connect me to my familial ancestors. I have a couple from both of my grandfathers that I can't wait to pass on to my own son. 2. They are micromachines! 3. They are beautiful! 4. They are so incredibly varied in size, shape, color, usage, movement type, etc that there's a watch for every need and desire. 5. As an architect, there is a connection to me of something that is purely form follows function such as a watch. 6. They are a wrist-worn fidget spinner! 7. I could go on but I'll stop here......

Beautiful result, thanks for posting. The dial scratching the date disk like that is very odd - I wonder if someone pushed down on the Rolex logo to hard and bent the dial in slightly? What I love so much about the old watches is with a simple clean and oiling they spring back to life and work like they were almost new again - go from 3.3ms beat to 0.0ms just like that

Not sure for the dial. It was just the two pins holding the rolex logo that were not perfectly flush with the dial backside.

Another great job with excellent commentary. I love vintage watches for the quality, the sound, the feel and the wonder of who may have worn them and where they may have been but the best thing is to get them going again. Cheers French.

Do you think since it appeared someone altered the stem that they may have replaced the dial at one time with a replacement or possibly repaired the dial? Maybe that would explain why it rubbed on the date wheel.

For sure the stem doesn't look original. I cannot believe rolex would let a watch leave the factory like this. Not sure for the dial

Concerning the crown stem, we can have the impression that a weld with tin was made? why not (...) but it's not a conventional practice, especially on a beautiful ROLEX watch. It all started when my father gave me his Cyma Navystar 36000bph from there I did a lot of research about watches. The class, time keeping, and engineering behind watches have kept me inlove through the years. Love the channel so much and I hope I win, it is so nice to pair that Longines ultrachron with my Cyma beating at 36000bph

Another enjoyable video - every watch tells a story! I like the character of these vintage watches. Just compare this Rolex you just repaired to the current catalog offerings which Rolex in my opinion has sterilized of any character. The current watches from Tudor are much more to my liking. They are built using modern materials and techniques but still manage to have plenty of character that will continue increase with time.

Another great video :) If I may make one small suggestion; if you use the word "we" instead of "I" when you do something then it helps the viewer feel like they are a part of the experience rather than just watching it. Its a small thing, but its one of the intangibles that can really draw people in. You already hit some of the major intangibles like A/V quality, editing flow, and narrative flow. Keep up the good work! :D

Because they are unique, with a lot of characters and history and from a different era. It so cray to think what they achieved without computers and modern machine. It is as well an era where they did not think about profitability but more the craftsmanship and beauty of a product

Watches… why do I love them…… I call them “Earth Rotation Monitors (ERM)”. They tell us, periodically, where the Earth is in relation to the Sun. Does “time” even exist outside that definition? From my research, Science does not know definitively. It’s perplexing, and it’s one reason I love ERMs. They are mysterious and linked to the secrets of creation itself. The small machines that drives them are fascinating! But for me, the dial is the crucial element of attraction. You must love the dial of your ERM. It must make you smile and admire it each time you check where the Sun and Earth are in their space dance. Precious metal or plastic, a watch must stir your admiration and bring you joy, and just slightly, fire your imagination.

Me gustan los relojes con cuerda manual y me gusta ese Rolex, aunque para mi el Rolex tiene algo que no me gusta en ese reloj y es que cada vez que se la da cuerda hay que desenroscar la corona, dar cuerda y volver a enroscar la corona...no lo veo práctico sin contar el desgaste que sufre al roscar y desenroscar... tengo un Rolex 1500 del año 73 con sus caja y documentos y está muy bien conservado...saludos desde Uruguay.

Why do I love watches? . Well, I love them for what they can do! I love “tool” watches. . Here’s a funny story about a Rolex. For a time, I was the high bidder (eBay) on a Rolex GMT Master, all gold, c. 1981. . All gold?-Not my style! Mais, for $300 (three-hundred dollars), I said “Ok”. . I had the bid for about an hour, c’est vrai! The gold Jubilee bracelet was somewhat scratched on the bottom & clasp, but a good polisher like yourself could make that watch shine! . Puis, éventuellement the watch sold for c. $21,000, et malheurusement, the bid WAS NOT à moi😉! . Vous êtes formidable, Monsieur. Happy to know of your Atelier channel so I can improve my Français!
