Vintage Remington .22 Tackdriver

I was going through my gun collection, and decided to make a video featuring one of my vintage .22's. The Remington 513-T is an extremely accurate target rifle that can shoot with many modern rifles. Watch and see how well this old .22 can print tiny groups at an honest 50 yards. Here is the link to Remington's dates of manufacture; www.oldguns.net/sn_php/remdat...

I own many vintage Remington 22 rifles. All of them are tack shooters. I consider these old firearms treasures that the rest of the world hasn't picked up on yet. They are usually inexpensive and better shooters than many modern expensive rifles. Given the choice between a modern 22 and a vintage Remington, I'll take the old gun every time.

Remington made some good ones my personal favorite is a 541T that I picked up some years ago at a now defunct ( like almost all gun shops in Cook County Illinois) gun shop when I was forced by circumstances to sell most of my firearms I held on to this one, as it's the most accurate rifle I've ever fired and the group included some old Winchester and Springfield target rifles!

YOU BET, I Bought my 541 in 93 and am so glad I did. It is ridiculously accurate and I,ve probably shot around 750 squirrels with it over the 30 years I've had it. Of all my guns THE 541 is the one I WILL NOT PART WITH. Have had many high end offers on it which just tells me hows hard they are to find.

When I was in my teens I worked on a farm. I saved my money up and bought a .22 Remington pump gun. The cheapest gun they made or close or close to it. It wasn't a very good rifle. It shot well but the sight came loose and being young, I didn't know how to properly fix it.I never bought another Remington until a friend that was a doctor sold me a 22/250 bolt action Bull barrel it was very accurate and never failed me. age helped me realise Remington made some fine rifles. It shot as accurate as my Anshutz and that is saying a lot!

I picked up two old Winchesters this week, a Winchester 55 single shot and a tube fed Winchester 77. I already had the magazine fed 77, but wanted one of the tube fed models. The little 55 is a unique slam fire design. Love my old .22’s. Wishing now that I had kept the old Remington 510, 511, and 514. You got me hooked on the 581’s, now you’re peaking my interest in the 513 and 541.

I have added a rail and use a scope for target shooting and made the mistake of removing some of the barrel and having it threaded for muzzle devices. I feel I lost some of the accuracy however it still shoots less than half moa at fifty yards consistently with good ammunition. Your rifle is a really nice one mine was a hand me down most likely from the CMP I bought it from a private collector. I just shot fifty rounds through it today it never disappoints me.

I didn't mention it in the video, But I actually grooved the receiver to accept the dovetail mounts I installed. This smithing job requires some very careful filing with specially angled files, precise measuring, and a lot of patience. I have done this on other models that I own such as a 512, and two 511's.

BEAUTIFUL rifle! Not a piece of plastic to be found on it. And I'm sure it was built with American pride. Back when we still knew what that word meant. I would love to have a collection of those grand "senior" rifles, but I have a fear that parts will be harder to find. Also, good "smiths" are becoming harder to find where I live, to work on them. I may be a gun snob, and for that I'm sorry. But I would take a rifle like yours any day of the week over the latest, greatest offerings out there today! Thank you for the beautiful memories.

If you want to own an older classic rifle, I would go ahead and get whatever my heart desired. If you find one in good condition, you really shouldn't need much if any gunsmithing. I have found parts available on Gunbroker, Ebay, and other online sources such as Numrich. Even factory original components and parts such as magazines, complete bolt assemblies, barrels, trigger systems, and stocks are still regularly available, so don't let that fear stop you. Anyhow I appreciate the comments, and kind words very much.

My first love ate premiere 22 rimfires, they're just much fun to shoot and hunt with . Currently own a Rem 541 T which I would,nt part with for anything. Took it to the range one afternoon and there was a guy there with a beautiful vintage anschutz mod 52. He took one look at my T and said I heard they're PRETTY accurate and I said more than pretty but scary accurate. He looked at me sideways caressing his 54 and said CARE TO PUT YOUR GUN UP AGAINST MINE. I said sure and he pulls out some gold medal match ammo while I pulled out some American eagle 38gr hp,s .He said something I could,nt pick up and proceeded to shoot a nice dime sized group of 5 at 50yds saying bet your gun wont be even close. I set up and shot a 5 shot group half the size of his and he was shocked. I told him if I could have 5 of his gold medal match bullets and he handed me 5. I got a good rest and shot a 5 shot group that was 1 HOLE. He made me a great offer on my Remington and asked if he could shoot it.I said sure , 2 boxes of shells later he hated to hand it back saying he,d love to take that gun to his competition shoots and watch jaws drop as he outshot guys with olymoic target rifles. I dont know if I just got the best of the best but that little rifle FLAT OUT SHOOTS. Have never heard anyone say their 541 didnt shoot well.

Only thing I don't care for about these Match or Target barrel models is that you can't shoot CCI Stingers or other brands that make the longer cased high velocity rounds. If I was into entering Target Matches I could see it maybe but all my rifles do double duty. I want the option to take larger vermin like coyotes and bobcats. Not that a good high velocity round doesn't work but rather they are so sketchy that it's harder to get very close to them most of the time I like to be able to use a round that I know I can take the longer shots needed.

@@bigbilllasalle One of the reasons I love posting videos that feature old .22's, is folks like you sharing their experiences. That's a great story, and I thank you for sharing it. The memories, and past experiences we have with these old guns are what make them so special. Just wondering.........do you still own that Scoremaster rifle?

Firearms made before October 22 1968 were not required to have serial numbers. The National Firearms Act was passed in 1968, and thereby all gun manufacturers in America stamped the receivers and/or frame of their products to comply with federal regulations. Also, any firearm imported into the US had to have a serial number as required by the act.

ALRIGHT...!!!......I HAVE THIS MODEL...BUT WITH GLOBE SIGHTS."PEEP"....I HAVNT HAD IT LONG..ONLY SHOT IT A FEW TIMES...PEEP SIGHTS ARE DIFFICULT FOR ME TO SEE THRU...RECIEVER ISNT TAPPED OR GROOVED..JUST THE BARREL IS TAPPED ... THAT WOULD ACCOMMODATE A LONG TUBE SCOPE

@@aircommando505 99 M-1 was my first rifle. Still have it but broke the stock doing drill team practice flips. Countless rounds through it and it will still stack 'em in a competition target. Unfortunately, can't say the same for my old eyes.
