Vintage MEGO Black Hole 3 3/4 Inch figures review - Toy Polloi

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The vintage MEGO Disney Black Hole 3 3/4 inch action figures are some of the best figures from the late 70's great sculpts, articulation, and design. They can also be very hard to find. Wave one was released worldwide, wave two (apart from the sentry robot) was only available in small numbers in Canada.
If you can track them down they are well worth collecting. Watch my review for find out more about them.

I loved these as a kid. I hated the thumb breakage. I was always so careful with my Buck Rogers, Black Hole, CHiPs, and Dukes of Hazard figures for that reason. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!!!

When I was a kid, none of these figures were sold in Brazil. But on the other hand, on newsstands, a paper model magazine called Destaque e Brinque (Detach and Play) was sold, which in one of its issues published a Vincent to assemble. This Vincent, participated in many adventures alongside my Falcons (the Brazilian version of G.I.Joe) facing Torak, Falcon's Brazilian archenemy. And knowing how to draw, I copied Vincent's model pattern, and created Boris, the evil robot, Torak's assistant. Super Fun times!

I even got my son to watch it a few years back trying to recreate xmas's of old when films like the black hole, flash Gordon, star wars ,star trek and tron would be dotted all over the xmas tv schedule..... you've given me another toy line to hunt for now lol

Like you, I have a fondness for Black Hole. As a kid, I had VINCENT, Maximillian and Sentry - I think the main reason I only asked for those were to incorporate into my Star Wars play, as I would frequently mix figures of the same size in play. I’m tempted to try and pick the up once more. BOB is probably a pipe dream at this point.

I was not a big fan of the film, but I did pick up the robots when I was a kid. Vincent and Max hung out in the Star Wars Land of the Jawas as part of the droid sale. The Sentry became a henchman for Baron Karza. Great video!

Good video, Dave. These are favourites of mine, too. It would be great if someone like Stan Solo productions could make repro figures of this range;(including variants like the unmasked Humanoid, Maximillian with swappable arms, and Maximillian with Reinhardt's terrified face looking out of it's eye-slot) - they're good at stuff like that. I was always annoyed that they never came with weapons - for a Disney movie, it's very violent in places. A company that makes weapons for LEGO mini figs, which are out of scale with them, but perfect for 3.75" figures, did make the iconic Black Hole laser pistols for a while, but not any more. A friend 3D printed an Old B.O.B. figure in 3.75" scale for me, and a nice little USS Palomino. A good range of figures that really deserve more love.

The movie at the time, scared the hell out of me. I still have a soft spot for it. Mego had all cylinders running on these figures. I have to say, I was suprised that Mego didn't do Space 1999 figures, at the time, and Mattel got that license for that Eagle 1. At the time, I had to use my Buck Rodgers and Micronauts for the Eagle 1 crew that I had going on.

Great video, always happy to see a fellow Black Hole fan. The Sentry was definitely part of the first wave despite not being on the back of the card. Growing up in Canada, I can tell you that I waited and waited for B.O.B Humanoid and S.T.A.R but had all the other characters. They appeared the following year in the 1980 Simpsons-Sears Catalog and ultimately I found a whole wall of them at K-Mart for $1 in early 1981.

I was a huge Black Hole fan as a kid. I remember my local Woolco (or maybe it was Woodward's) having bins overflowing with Reinhardt figures. I guess he was the peg warmer in my corner of Canada. Any time my dad went out of town for work, I'd beg him to look for a VINCent figure, not understanding that the reason I couldn't find one was because the toy line hadn't been in production for years. I did eventually get more Black Hole figures at local garage sales and such growing up. I even had an Old BOB. Sadly, about 10 years ago I hit a pretty rough financial patch. I was forced to sell a number of items in my collection, including the vintage diecast Tie Bomber, and Old BOB, in order to make my mortgage payment. Prices are such now that I don't ever expect to add those pieces back to my collection. Forever lost to the Black Hole I guess :p

One can only hope you get the last two for your collection. I koved VINCENT and Old BOB since childhood, but think this range might be one I have to watch from a distance. I wish Buck Rogers figures were armed, such a poor business decision! The Black Hole seems to be an under appriciated film amd toy range now, not sure the newer generations are even aware of the film, but as a kid it was just a wonderful concept film.

I could only find about half these figures back in the day ; Holland, Pizer, Reinhardt, and the robots Maximillian, the Sentry, and V·I·N·CENT. Eventually I got my hands on a Humanoid (the robed drones with silver masks), but that was it.

I don't think I will ever be lucky enough to own the 3 that I am missing as they are way out of my price range when they come up for sale, but you never know and to be honest I am happy really with the 9 I have which is what we got back in the day here in the UK. Thanks again for all the great info on these wonderful figures.

This was one of those films that stuck around in my mind from childhood, but only vague impressions of it. Mostly the design of Vincent. I was surprised at how good the film actually was when I revisited it as an adult. Now ... maybe someone can help me with this .. but I swear I remember some strange elementary school program in my youth that involved a fake robot that looked really similar to Vincent, especially the eyes. I feel like they actually brought the robot prop to our school, but it's a very strained memory... (For reference, I was born in '86... so this would've been in the early 90s, in the southern United States.)

While I really like the logo spiraling down into a black hole (even if pink, so it can be seen) I've always preferred a less generic/repetitive background. Those photos on back would've been nice on the front or even painted image or best yet, comic book style drawing. Kirby, Ditko or Perez art would've tripled or quadrupled their sales. Back in the day I really wanted them to do a weekly Battlestar Galactica (the original) type show or even Star Trek (the animated series) style. The figures though didn't really do anything for me (except for the robots), but glad to see the line was enjoyed by others.

Wow. I used to buy these as a kid in Alders of Sutton. Now I know why I was never able to get ‘Old Bob’. I collected these and Battlestar Galactica figures with my limited funds. One thing I remember but have never been able to find again was a ‘Black Hole’ ballpoint pen I bought in the same shop. It was all plastic and a recall it looking a bit like a Parker Jotter. The barrels were white and the top part with the clip and button varied depending on the character. Mine was purple so I’m assuming it was a sentry guard. If anyone can help with a link to a pic of these I’d be very grateful.

Old Bob was made in Italy too. Super7 are doing the Black Hole in their reaction line soon and I think both Vincent and Bob are in wave one. I don’t think Mego did as good a job with Bob as they did with Vincent in terms of being movie accurate and the figures since (Kubrick and Diamond Select) show what can be done. I expect the Super7 Old Bob will be a superior sculpt and more accurate details in the 3.75 scale.

I only had a few Black Hole figures - Captain Dan Holland, Vincent and Maximillion. I think part of the problem is that as a story, The Black Hole just isn't that child-friendly in the way that Star Wars was, with it's menagerie of characters, weird aliens, droids, and cool spaceships. Mego produced action figures with incredibly accurate likenesses for their different lines. I'm not sure you can necessarily say the same did Kenner & Star Wars. The face of a Star Trek Motion Picture Mr Spock looks just like Leonard Nimoy in that movie. The Kenner Han Solo looks nothing like Harrison Ford. V.I.N.CENT looks like the prop in the film. R2-D2 takes some creative liberties. I'm not saying all Mego's figures were brilliant - Daisy Duke looks nothing like the actress from The Dukes of Hazzard, and their Buck Rogers never really looked like Gil Gerard. But Mego seemed to keep picking properties with limited appeal, or that weren't particularly child-friendly like the Black Hole (or ST:TMP). And often, the other toys in a range were flimsy as hell. Look at the Motion Picture Enterprise Bridge playset - it's made of plastic that's little better than an inlay tray for a box of chocolate biscuits. Whereas you could practically throw a Kenner Millennium Falcon around, and it would be fine.
