Vintage Action Man Space Ranger Battlepack & Laser review - Toy Polloi

Ойын-сауық

I'm a big fan of the Action Man Space Ranger figures and thought it was time I reviewed one of the great accessories you could get for him, The Battlepack and Laser set, and the additional Helipak and Space Walk set that plugged into the Battlepack.
This is a great set to have in your collection and one I remember playing with as a child. Really fun to have them again. And I often wondered if there is a link between this set and the James Bond 007 Film Moonraker. Turns out there is.

When I was a kid in the 80s I made a helicopter backpack for my GI Joes using a motor from an old Millenium Falcon and a painted popsicle stick as the helicopter blades. I thought I had come up with the coolest new accessory and now I found out that I was beaten to the punch by Palitoy!

I used random motors for all kinds of stuff. Of course, what I made never quite equaled what I'd imagined. When my FANG copter's blades broke off I tried to motorize them. Part of me thought there was a vague chance that it would fly.

Ever think of trying to design toys? I will always respect toy designers because you pass imagination on to kids and I don't buy that junk that kids don't play with toys today garbage. I know my niece does.

It’s often remarkable how many of share the same experiences and memories. When I was 9 years old, that Christmas Day I got the Space Ranger Action Man and this laser pack along with the Space Speeder vehicle- perhaps the best Christmas gift set of all time. Today, visiting my parents house I rescued the Space Speeder along with parts of the Ranger uniform (sadly the action man itself is long lost) but the laser pack was there and complete. The electronics no longer work but I’m delighted to have these back 40 years later.

Thanks Dave. Nice review. As a young boy, my parents could not afford Action Man/ GI Joe as they were quite expensive. I got the poor man's version which was Major Matt Mason. I'm mentionning this because he had a space walk thingy similar to the one featured here. Unfortunately, after a short while, the cable inside the backpack became tangled and the device would no longer work. I can tell you I was one 10 years old heart broken boy.

What a cool toy. I had never seen this before, and was amazed seeing all the cool accessories and the overall aesthetic is just so great. If I remember rightly, the big GI Joe (v1? edit- sorry, v2, the Adventure Team) also had a kind of portable backpack helicopter, maybe even larger than this one, but I don't think it was this cool. And those painted illustrations are super awesome! Why can't we have that kind of stuff today?

Thank you for sharing your wonderful childhood memories with us, Dave! I remember cutting out comic book adverts that featured Star Wars toys and play sets to put on my wall as a kid! Always dreaming of having cooler toys that I rarely got back then! I grew up with Adventure People, Megos, Six Million Dollar Man, Micronauts, and Star Wars action figures, and I had at the GI Joe in camo fatigues with the "Kung Fu Grip." He had the facial scar and the brown, fuzzy hair, beard and mustache. That's the closest I got to Action Man. By the time the small GI JOEs rolled around, I wasn't collecting toys anymore, and it's only in recent years that I've been collecting them. So far I have every figure from 1982-1987, and many of the better vehicles. You're never to old to be a kid again. :)

Love your videos, particularly Action Man ones. I watched your excellent video of the restoration of the Deep Sea Diver. The outfit took me right back to my childhood. I looked on Ebay and several months later, what started out as an interest in vintage AM, has turned into an obsession lol. Gives me something to do during Lockdown. So thanks again. By the way my gf thinks the Deep Sea Diver is the best outfit, in my ever growing AM collection.

That helped correct my memories - I'd assumed I'd bought the battlepack as one set complete with the add-ons. I guess I was particulary flush with my pocket money that weeked (or had gone back a few weeks later). Unfortunately my Action Man's Space Ranger outfit "melted" in storage, and I had to bin it

That’s Ace! I remember all the points you mentioned being problems as a kid. I was lucky to have a dedicated action man to be the space ranger. The under crotch strap went straight away, it was a pain! The visor I lost and was gutted, it must have been easily detachable. My wires didn’t work after a very short time so I could only illuminate the front. The batteries eventually leaked and that was nearly the end of it but I loved it so much! It was really cool and I’m so glad you’ve shown this. I would have loved the space walk accessory as I was obsessed with that kind of toy. Great video thanks! 😁👍👊😎

It was neat to hear about an Action Man figure getting used as a model in a James Bond film. In fact, I saw some old catalogs online advertising the Moon-raker tie in toys from another toy company, and they apparently used the model used in the film to advertise their tie in toy line. So they basically used a possible rival toy line to advertise their toy line.

@@toypolloi Yes, they were infuriating! Oh, do you have the diving submarine? That was my favourite as a kid! They really did have some ingenious features! Oh and the Gargoile monster thing that walked until you fired a torch at it if I remember right! Was he called the intruder? I prefer to see if my memory works than Google it and you’re the Action Man, man! (See what I did there). I’m pretty sure I had a hang glider too that flew but I might be mistaken! Great memories! My favourite Army one was the German Desert and sidecar! I loved that toy! Plus the Police motorcycle was excellent too! They did motorcycles really well!

I've got some videos on the submarine, it was a fun thing to fix up. I mainly collect the outfits, not got the room for too many vehicles. Although I am working on one now for a future video. Got myself an Intruder recently. Doesn't fit in with the rest of the Action Man toys, but it's pretty cool.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but the arms on the action pack are a bit short because I think they are a reused mold of the arms used for the Super Joe GI Joe heli-pack. He was the 8.5 inch scale figure so he had shorter arms and it worked well for him, but not so much for Action man. :) I believe they came out at about the same time as this set.
