Didn't see the other video, but this attitude "my kid is having ideas about being ENEMIES, but 'nobody should kill' is too deep for him to understand" reads just like those videos where religious leaders justify throwing gays off the roofs. USA is clearly part of that whole sand religion diaspora of unhinged violence being normalized. And THAT IS USA, not "America", majority of that continent is called "non-Americans" by Unitedstadians. Even the Han chinese don't call themselves "the Asian nationality", but "Americans" do.
There's an important line from the first volume that I want to comment here because Daniel didn't call it out specifically in this video: "The only reason I must rely on this sword... is because I am imperfect. A true warrior... needs no sword." -Chapter 15 (appropriately titled 'True Warrior')

Others have already mentioned this, but I would also highly recommend the 24 episode season 1 of the anime. You don't have to worry about Askeladd's name tbh, almost everyone gets it wrong anyway. The name comes from a protagonist in many Norwegian fairy tales, and it means "Ash Lad" because his job in the house was to blow on the coals to stoke the fire. As you have noticed, most of mangas start with a very direct set up and info dumping. This is mainly because the way manga industry works in Japan, where if you dont get popular in the first issues (10-15 chapters) you may be cancelled. So mangakas usually write a first simple arc to catch as many readers as they can and then is when they start developing the story they want to tell.

For me personally, - what I liked about the anime, is that it presented the events chronologically. I'm not a huge fan of flashbacks because it's a bit spoiling the surprise for me, and I was baffled by how the manga intertwined the events. Personally I'm more satisfied how the anime handled it. Also I liked it that there were more added scenes of Thorfinn growing up and learning how to survive on his own and how to fight, I think it's a very nice addition. - what I disliked about the anime, is that it placed the last Thorfinn/Askeladd duel before the banquet and while in York. For me it didn't make much sense, I mean I get it that it was for more drama and shock value. But it doesn't for example justify that a heavily injured Bjorn managed to stick around for a 5 days trip on the Ouse river and be able to hold his own in a faux duel with Askeladd. Also Askeladd told Thorfinn specifically that he promises a duel once they reach *Gainsborough*, I bet Thorfinn would have given him a hard time if he didn't honor the promise. Also why would they busy themselves with a petty duel right in the middle of cooking the king? The plotting was so thick they had to keep their eyes on the ball.
I really appreciate the variety of different pieces of content/franchises that the channel focuses on, looking forward to this series

Oh I'm so hyped for this read along, like Berserk, Vinland Saga has been a series I have been following for a very very long time and it is a series that is close and dear to my heart as an artist. I cannot give enough praise to the author Makoto Yukimura a fellow research junkie and his insane attention to detail. Vinland Saga is one fo the best period pieces within the genre of manga next to mangas like Cesare or Jin. It's still astounding that an artist can manage such levels of accuracy in the details, from the props to the architecture to the arms, armor, and to the dress and atttire of the inhabitants of varing regions within Europe. It's one thing writing these details in a written medium, but another level in density in research to depict them visually. I've read interviews and seen some where Yukimura stated that he and his staff went out of their way to build mock versions of the props like the dane axe to understand the ways in which they may be wielded and carried, while also creating scaled models of the long ships to get a grasp of how they function and be used as reference within ther production. Another cool side note is how Ubisoft kinda partnered with Yukimura during their release of Assassins Creed Valhalla due to similarity in the setting and region. Also Yukimura also was a guest in a japanese youtube channel where they invite professionals of certain fields that a certain game heavily focuses on, and was invited to discuss details concering the Vikings for Assasin Creed Valhalla. Definitely a must watch if you understand japanese for fans of VInland Saga and Makoto Yukimura.
Wow, I can't believe how true your statement at the end was, most arcs of this manga could be read as standalone stories, definitely has the quality of cohesive storytelling...Personally I gave up on this manga after a series of events after which the general outline of the story changed drastically, but knowing your taste, that part might very well become your favourite

Manga usually debut with one long hook chapter (others have already pointed out some stuff regarding the industry) and the first chapter is the entirety of episode 7 whereas the rest of this volume (which is around 15 chapters i believe) takes up the first 4 episodes of the anime. So yeah when you have confirmation that the entire 24 episodes are produced regardless, you don't necessarily need that hook anymore
One of my favorite things about Vinland saga is how many characters actually existed. Thorfinn, Knut the Great, and Thorkell the Tall were all real people! It's a super cool thing that shows how dedicated the author is to the period quick edit: if you want to avoid spoilers I'd avoid looking them up, it's not a 1 to 1 thing but some storylines kinda connect to the real life counterparts

10:23 Vinland Saga is surprisingly accurate when it comes to history, culture and "costume" design. Even the borderline supernatural feats some of these warrior pull off can be said to be simply a tribute to the (usually embellished) stories of the Norse Saga, which the manga is based on. Just love that you are reading, it's truly an awesome story. Btw there's a great anime adaptation that covers the first couple of volumes, I highly recommend it
A couple of notes here. Thors tanking all those arrows is badass, but not without precedent. Arrows wounds were rarely immediately fatal. King Henry the Fifth of Agincourt fame took one to the face and lived, though not without significant scarring. That scene from Fellowship where Boromir got shot multiple times and kept fighting? That was a thing that happened, on numerous occasions. Unless the arrow hit something vital, like the heart, lungs, or an artery, you were more likely to die of infection or shock than anything else. Thors taking that many and keeping his feet stretches things a little, but that brings us neatly to the second note. VInland Saga is an expansion and adaptation of the actual Norse sagas. Many of the characters in the manga were real historical figures. The author takes some liberties, sure. Many of the people were only mentioned in passing and likely never met each other. But, he does an excellent job of capturing the spirit of the sagas, where regular people were elevated to the point of myth and legend. Norse culture placed a lot of significance on boasting and telling tales of glory on the battlefield, and things tended to get slightly exaggerated in the telling. Vinland Saga plays with this idea by taking the heightened sense of unreality that comes from the source material and playing it completely straight in an otherwise grounded world.
24:40 oh BOY I can't wait to get to *that* particular panel 👀
15:45 very right here, from my understanding of the industry. The manga publishing world is weekly/bi-weekly and is incredibly cut throat when it comes to possibly getting your story cancelled by the magazine. Japan still has, when it comes to weekly manga, an approach that is very reminiscent of stories in Pulp magazines in the US or Roman-feuilleton (serial) that you found in journals in France and are the sources of books like The Three Musketeers or The Count of Monte Cristo (Dumas) and many of Jules Vernes books.
Oh boy I’m excited for this one. Vinland Saga is truly a masterpiece of a tale
I knew you would like this. This, Beserk and Vagabond are the legendary 3 of Manga masterpieces that transcend the medium. (Kingdom may be in there too depending on who you ask)
I think my favorite moment that sets the tone for the entire series is when the young men are all asking thors to tell them grand stories of his time as a warrior and he tells them about when he became a father and what an asshole he was at the time, heading off to war barely bothering to give her a name.
I‘ll be finishing one piece, then reading Vinland saga so watching this will sadly have to wait. But I‘m very excited to finally read it soon
So hyped to read along a new manga with these videos. Any way we can get a rough estimate how long time we got before next volume to time it with you?
I feel like "Story Time" might draw in more folks in general, but "Readalong" is more accurate to what someone who is actually looking for this video would call it. Also I have been super looking forward to this one. I haven't decided whether or not to read Vinland yet, so I imagine this video will be my ultimate, or perhaps penultimate deciding factor.
It's interesting watching you and Merphy Napier review the same series at the same time. You both focus on different things and have different takeaways, though both of you seem to agree Vinland Saga is worth checking out. I look forward to the next volume review.
Oh boy it's so nice seeing Dan's expectations on characters knowing their future now. This is going to be one hell of a ride.
Yes yes yes this is what I've been waiting for
End of the prologue will be so good i cant wait
