Jason also killed a couple of people using a Machette. I remember a person being cleaved through the shoulder besides Jason himself. If your going to iconize a weapon for Jason then personally I would go with the circular saw on a stick or crossbows as he used the bolts more than once and basically no other slasher uses ranged weapons.

Thank you so much for sharing this journey. You went over a significant amount I had yet heard about... and yes according to my friend this is a series where rereads reveal a lot of subtle clues. I can say that I believe his approach for ending her worked because she could CONTROL none of the events around it and so it forced a surrender out of her. I think going forward Its up to Denji to grant the dreams of various devils/fiends/people/etc. because I feel that is what Pochita wants to do but was incapable of doing previously. Cheesey as hell but I think it would fit that the person with great minor ambitions will be the one to make those around them genuinely happy. Crazy insane challenge to pull off, but that is why it could be interesting to follow the adventures of.

The point of the fast food scene is that Denji is at this point dead, the one in control is pochita. Denji died the moment his dream of a normal life died, so Pochita is trying desperately to fullfill the dreams he heard from Denji (eating a burger, going on a date) in an attempt to get him to come back, all for naught.

Just to clarify, the Chainsaw Man that's the hero of hell, ate previous atrocities such as the nazis, and is ultimately the Chainsaw Devil IS Pochita, who's in a weaker form after escaping from Hell. The suped up Denji is also Pochita who's been forced into that form because Makima broke the contract he formed with Denji, forcing him into control, and he's trying in vain to fulfill the dreams that Denji told him about. Eating a good burger and going on a date. But he's so unintentionally dangerous and violent he can't even do that without causing mayhem and death.

Thanks for the clarification, I was under the impression that Makima temporarily got control over Chainsaw Man when Denji transformed into his suped up version. It was rather that Pochita took control in that moment if I understand your explication correctly right ? And he would have attacked Makima immediatly if he hadn't been grabbed to hell then ? I think I see Fujimoto's logic in this but it takes a bit of thinking in why she couldn't have secured Chainsaw Man's powers by asking Denji to "give everything to her" in his lowest moment ? Like was the contract with Pochita not completly broken yet or did she need to beat him in his chainsaw man form ? I am sorry for all these questions, I loved it overall but a lot of the explainations Makima gives in volume 10 confused me on why she wasn't forcing things more, so to speak.

I'm of the opinion that Makima had gotten the wrong wording of the contract between Pochita and Denji, as she heard the exchange on the logs between Denji and Pochita for a normal life and body swap, but the actual contract is Denji shows Pochita his dreams, and Pochita becomes Denji's heart. Denji's dreams change constantly throughout the story, so she never actually breaks that specific contract, which allows Denji to eventually win.

it also goes to show how little SHE understands the Chainsaw Man. DENJI did, and that's why he wins, because unlike Makima he saw what was beneath Chainsaw man's exterior (literally). And this lack of understanding, and her twisted sense of love, is part of why she loses.

There was a lot of small details I think you missed in these last two volumes, still an awesome video overall. 1. Makima's scent was set up back in the first two chapters, telling Denji he has a peculiar smell and that she has a particularly good sense of smell. 2. The scene with Power and Denji in the dumpster is more of a dream sequence and a direct parallel to the sequence with Pochita and Denji in the first chapter. 3. The reveal that the Nazi's canonically don't exist in the CSM universe was one of my favourites. The pure "WTF" when Makima asked Kishibe if he remembered what the Nazis did to the Jews and his response being, "Nazis?" was bone-chilling. This had been subtly foreshadowed through the fact that the soviet union still exists, despite it being set in 1997 when the soviet union should've already been dissolved. 4. Denji asking Makima if bad movies would still exist is an obvious callback to the movie watching chapter at the end of the Katanaman arc, where the experience of watching the 9 bad movies in a row made the 10th good movie all the more impactful. 5. Makima's line to Denji as she rips out his heart is "If your going to get in our way, then die!" Which is the exact same thing Denji said to the Zombie devil back in chapter 1. 6. Denji eating Makima while gross was also kinda set up, as throughout the early parts of the story it had been stated repeatedly that he would eat just about anything... ANYTHING. 7. Makima mentions the four horseman of the apocalypse in Vol 10, in which she herself is one of the horsemen. The Kanji used for her name in Japanese can be translated to "Control" and also "Conquest" which is one of the names of the horsemen, the others being War, Famine and Death obviously. 8. The Kobeni torture scene, along with being one of my favourite moments of the series, is Pochita desperately trying to fulfill Denji's dreams in order to bring him back from death essentially. As you can imagine the Kobeni dance panel is a massive meme within the community. Finally my favourite moment from these two volumes and in the entire series is the conversation between Denji and Kobeni. The deconstruction of Denji's life goal of wanting to be normal and him realising that in many ways he had been living a normal life despite the circumstances being extreme. When he sees the TV broadcast and sees how everyone loves him as Chainsaw Man, he realises he loves that attention and love from the public, he starts talking about how he wants more out of life than the bare minimum, he starts taking an active role in his life for once and decides for himself that he WANTS to be Chainsaw Man. In many ways, this is the first major decision Denji has made throughout not only the story, but his entire life. It is the moment where he breaks free of the confines of Makima's control, it is the moment he breaks free from being treated as a dog, it is the moment he steps forward and decides selfishly for himself that he wants to be a hero. To me, that whole revelation is incredible and gets even better upon reread. Glad you liked the series overall! There are already 9 chapters out of part 2 which started earlier this year so I highly recommend reading them as they've been absolutely fantastic so far!

Kishibe mentions how the Control Demon will just turn into Makima again if they leave her to be raised by the government. The (almost) first thing she says is a comment on his scent. "You're a strange one. You don't smell like a devil or a human." The (almost) last thing she says is her saying "Now we will always be together." Also, shout out to her saying "We'll eat together, sleep together, and have a lovely life." Chainsaw man is definetely one of those series that gets better with a re-read. An interesting fact I learned recently: In the scene where makima is fighting the Gun Devil, the chains that connect to the other characters seem to originate from Makima's womb. Through the use of intimidation and manipulation she *physically* fulfilled the control devil's wish of having a family. I hope you decide to check out Fujimoto's one shots: Look Back and Goodbye Eri. They have a more serious tone compared to Chainsaw Man, but the Fujimoto style remains as zany as ever.

I've always loved the scene where Makima is explaining CSM's ability to erase concepts from existence. The fact that she's lists things from our history and also things that don't exist in our world makes it feel more surreal to me, while also seeming to place the story in reality

I like how the Santa Clause agents basically outlined Makima's plan and how she would be defeated. Their way of making an "ideal doll" reflects what Makima was doing to Denji. The way they hunted the fox and ate it reflects Makima's death. Which I thought was great since Makima had expressed how she would be fine with being eaten earlier!

For all the chaos and insanity that chainsaw man has, it really does have a lot of heart. And not just in the pochita kind of way. At its core is some good ass characterization in a chaotic fucked up world, and is one of the reasons I fell in love with chainsaw man. It was nice seeing the perspective of a non regular manga reader on the manga itself and definitely entertaining seeing your reaction to the *mcdonalds happy makimeal*

I laughed when you did your little spiel about schlocky movies because Fujimoto is a big film buff. He has an entire one shot(Goodbye Eri) where the paneling is all in the style of someone filming a movie, and by far my favorite work he's done. Also, I just want to say, thank you for doing your chainsaw man read along. It actually brought up my own personal enjoyment of the series a point or two because I initially wasn't a big fan of chainsaw man.

Fujimoto's penchant for derailing his own scenes with abrupt interludes of pure farce is actually the focus of one of his one-off short comics, Goodbye Eri. It touches on how the main character's impulse alienates and offends certain people and ultimately drives some away from his art entirely, but is something he can never abandon because the permeability of that border between Real and Fake/serious and joke is at the center of what he does.

It was great watching someone who doesn't have a lot of anime/manga experience go through the story but I think one big thing you missed because you don't read manga is just how impressive it is that CSM is as good as it is. Its really hard to have a story flourish in a format where, save being too sick to draw, you have to deliver 19 pages with possible revisions every week, and make it engaging enough that people come back next week. And for reference anime adaptations tend to do 3+ chapters per episode so it's not a lot of room to work with narratively speaking. Paired with the relentless release schedule, it's common for the mangaka to kind of fly by the seat of their pants at times or forget to tie certain threads together (Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia are pretty good examples of characters or plot threads just kinda disappearing for a bit cus the mangaka just forgot). So while there are definitely other weekly series that are good, it's rare to see that level of craftsmanship, both in terms of art and narrative, in weekly shonen (the same genre as like Naruto and One Piece)

Some notes on the foreshadowing/early references to stuff that happens in the last volume: 1) Power's blood inside Denji: This one is fairly vague as foreshadowing goes, but just before Denji opens the door in ch82 he knows Power's intentions in a way that he shouldn't. I think this is a roundabout way of communicating that they are linked somehow. 2) Denji splitting off his heart: Aside from the obvious one when Pochita gets sent to space, Reze splits her head from her body during her attack on the public safety training house in ch46. Both head and body can move independently for a time. In addition the back of Denji's head can be seen among the people following Makima just prior to the final fight in the graveyard. 3) Makima desires a family: Two sources for this. Firstly at the end of ch22, in the train, before she gets shot, Makima seems to honestly state how she enjoyed the drinks the night before. The same scene also shows her distaste for the government who control her. Secondly ch39, the movie date chapter does a lot to characterise her. The scene where both she and Denji cry is a scene of heartfelt affection between two people. 4) Makima's sense of smell: Most obvious reference is at the end of ch1 when she finds Denji. I believe there is also a reference in ch2. A bit later she comments in the similarity in looks between Denji and Beam. Aside from that I can't think of any more references apart from the general "dog" motif.

Remember the scene where Denji swallowed puke from his first kiss? We were told Denji's body has a habit of swallowing everything. But yet, he couldn't swallow the ice cream, because Aki being gone broke him beyond anything he's been through. He's changed. Fujimoto uses jokes throughout the story as a precursor to character development. It's brilliant.

Pretty sure you missed a panel, because when chainsaw man rips his heart out after being in space, he revs it, and chucks it back down in the atmosphere forming a new body around his heart to continue attacking. That’s how he went from being flung into space to hurtling back down at Makima and gang. Also Denji ate her because of the chainsaw man “powers” of making things disappear that he ate, so …….. kinda makes it a little less weird? Eh not really.

IDK if you noticed but in the background while Makima is leading Denji to the door in the background is a painting by Gustave Dorè for Milton’s ‘Paradise Lost’ called ‘The Fall of Lucifer’ that depicts Lucifer being thrown out of heaven. I love how it calls back to chapter 1 with Denji saying the reason he’s okay with dying is that he’s lived all his dreams he told Pochita in chapter 1. I really like the subtle argument between Denji and Makima that’s symbolized by the town mouse and country mouse. Makima thinks things like be better if all bad things were erased, but Denji realizes that good things are only good because of their contrast with the bad things. This is shown with the flood movie bad move comparison, as they were able to enjoy that last movie so we’ll because of the previous bad movies they watched. Also some really good details with Makima is that when she first meets Denji she does comment on his scent. And the things with hugs at the end, if you go back to the date she goes on with Denji the part where she cries is a scene where two people are hugging

3:50 Makima is such an evil villain that she emotionally weaponized good boys like this. 4:30 It is not just that Makima is smarter but that Denji is emotionally exhausted and trying to go back to how he once was in a vain attempt at regaining happiness. 12:35 Something clever here is that not all the disasters she mentioned are real events. The reader if they think about its are put into the same place as Kishibe here trying to remember and determine what is true. It also establishes that this is a world where world War two never happened and nuclear weapons aren't a thing, which changes thing and is likely why the soviet union is still around. 14:08 This is not her family's restaurant. It is a restaurant where the employees are encouraged to treat each other as "family" despite the clear mistreatment Kobeni suffers there. 14:33 I won't go over the chainsaw here not being denji becuase many other comments have, but I'd like to point out that Kobenibwhile bonding earlier with the violence devil had mentioned how she had only gotten ice cream with someone before once with her father and how it was a good memory for her. Now being forced to get ice cream against her will with the chainsaw here is a really messed up violation of that memory. 16:55 I get what you mean in general but I don't quite get the problem here specifically. Makima is an incredibly powerful devil wielding the Gun Devils powers, her shooting Chainsaw into space isn't that crazy. Chainsaw man has been established to be near immortal so him surviving isn't an issue either. With him coming back he threw his heart to the earth and regenerated around it, it wasn't him shooting chains from space. 21:43 Again the burger people weren't her family and are all dead. She is glad to be away from her family so they don't get wrapped up in all of this and aren't in danger. 26:31 I'd like to point out the sheer irony here. This version of Denji she is monologing at about how he is not Chainsaw Man is an empty husk controlled remotely and holding Pochita's heart. It isn't Denji, it pretty much is chainsaw man, but Makima is so caught up in her delusions of Chainzaw man and has no idea what Pochita is actually like. 28:42 Kishibe has mentioned before that the greatest devil hunters are the ones who are the craziest rather than the strongest or the smartest. 30:16 I interpret it this way: Denji is really messed up here, but so is Makima, and becuase she would likely agree with defining this act as love is why her contract didn't protect her from it. 30:53 I won't nessassarily say it is well set up but she does mention having a strong sense of smell in the earliest chapters. It also really works thematically that this being obsessed with control never saw anyone's faces and only bothered remembering those she had an interest in, which never included Denji, despite his feelings for her and the promises she made. 31:31 It definitely feels like there should, but honestly anyone who knows the full story behind her is likely going to fear/hate her Kishibe himself included. Denji is pretty much the only one who would unconditionally love Nayuta and be able to protect her so the government doesn't grab her up and try to make her into a weapon. And that is the best shot at the new control devil not becoming a total monster like Makima was. 32:28 What got me at this point was realizing that all of this has been a massive Spiderman-esque superhero origin story. At the end of the day I feel that Chainsaw Man is alot like Denji himself: on the surface gross, violent, somewhat immature, and stupid, but insanely clever underneath all of that. That is not to say the formor is untrue or purely a distraction as at times it all comes together imto a character and story that we can really appreciate for how powerfully unique and surreal it all is. There are also alot of details that on a reread you will see and be utterly mind-blown by with the context from your first read.

3:26 cold hands can indicate stress or anxiety (when it's only the hands). It's kind of a helpful way of knowing when someone is stressed and they aren't great at verbalizing or sharing their feelings.

the scene with Power and Denji took place in denji's mind, similar to when Pochita gave him his heart, that's why we saw Power in her Fiend form and not as a devil. Also i don't know if you skipped a page or what not, but when Chainsaw man was shot into space he ripped out his heart, threw it back to earth, and regenerated back from that. also about that restaurant, Those people weren't Kobeni's family, it was jus a "family" themed restaurant, where the employees have to act like a part of one big family

Yup, that was exactly the reaction I was expecting to see to Denji’s solution to the, uh… “Makima Question.” Time will tell if Denji is the parent Nayuta needs, but is it weird to say I think they’ll be fine?

Wow what a great time it's been watching the reactions! I'm glad you found some enjoyment in the series by the end of it. The ending of the series blew me away with just how far they were willing to go. It wasn't always a fun feeling but it was unlike anything I've ever read. So far part 2 has been great so I can't wait for you to have the chance to enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing how you react to the rest of Vineland Saga from here on out!
