Discussion of Vinland Saga Book 4 with Merphy Napier

The wonderful Merphy Napier joins me to discuss the end of the first arc of Vinland Saga, book four! Our discussions of books one and three appeared on Merphy's second channel, ‪@merphynapierreviews‬, and our chat about book two previously dropped here. All of our discussions of the manga can be found in the "Vinland Saga" playlist on my channel. In addition, Merphy, who is introducing me to manga, has other content about Vinland Saga and other manga on her main channel, ‪@merphynapier42‬.

I love how Yukimura foreshadows Thorffin’s future … Askeladd once said that everyone is a slave to something and this first arc show us how Thorffin became an slave of himself, his range and his revenge . Now he is literally an slave …. ( I want to say more but I don’t want to spoil anyone haha)

That's very well said, Camila! Askeladd certainly had some wisdom, and Thorfinn was definitely a slave to his anger and vengeance. It's very cool how Yukimura foreshadows and deals with these themes.

I respect and adore how Yukimura spun a character of Askeladd from Askeladden. Where he took the outline of who Askeladden was within folklore and animated him to Askeladd through liberties allowed in historical fiction. There are very few occasions where you come across such a character in stories, and it truly was a treat and blessing to witness the realization of him as the prologue was being serialized.

Black pages are sometimes intentionally used as a pause. These are usually not included in the magazine release, but in the volume release of the manga. Inio Asano does this often after a depressing scene or big reveal, which helps you let what just happened sink in. However, they can also just be filler pages to offset the page number (previous chapter ending on the left page, next chapter starting on the left page).

I like merphy started adopting some of the little quirks of the Dr. I.e. making a statement, and then capping it off with something like, “don’t we?” Or “isn’t he?” Or something like that. Very charming. These two mesh so so so well together in conversation. Very natural and beautifully exploratory discussion.

One thing I found interesting is that Askeladd's mother was the only person who he was ever truly loyal to in his life. Like he loyally followed Canute but that was only really after Canute's transformation and Askeladd really only did it fulfill his own agenda. That is, he needed Canute in order to secure Wale's safety. As cold as Askeladd appears at times, you can tell how highly he viewed his mother and how important it was to him to fulfill her dreams. He took care of her as a child, overthrew his father's rule in order to get the resources to take her back to Wales to pass away in her homeland, and then dedicated his life to protecting the land she cared so deeply for. Not to mention, Askeladd's blood boiled both times when king Sweyn insulted her/ Wales.

I so wanted to mention Askeladd when you were discussing fathers and their influence on the characters. Thorfinn and Canute both had a bit of Askeladd in them as you discussed. Askeladd took matters in his own hand instead of waiting on his ancestor to return and being back paradise on earth, but he also sacrificed so much of goodness in him that he is far away from a good person worth of that paradise. He knew that, he saw someone capable of that in Thors. Revenge would be selfish and a loss, but Askeladd with his last moments made a choice that is right, one that is better than the two of evils he had to pick between

  • @PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy

Beautifully said! Askeladd's reaction to Thors -- wanting him to lead -- is a nice foreshadowing of his reaction to Canute, in whom Askeladd sees the potential for a great leader. This is confirmed by Thorkell's reaction to the two, especially when the they appear side by side in Thorkell's memory. Very cool stuff!

Those black pages are made for those dual page panels, without them, you would have that total image formation splitted instead of that awesome art moment. It is also made for those “turn the page” moments, it is one of the feel moments that the author can surprise you in this kind of media (that sensation when you turn the page and get goosebumps), basically it is a storytelling component that they think when producing it (sorry, english is not my first language)

Great discussion! This last volume was great there is something very shakespearean about this kind of ending. I look forward to you reading the next arc because this is where Thorfinn truly becomes a protagonist of his story. Askeladd's ending was masterfully executed, he was really someone who lived as his father, conniving, pillaging, killing, being essentially the same man he prayed for Artorius to end, that was his greatest tragedy, yet he died for his mother's ideals finally allowing for two new Artoriuses (Canute and Thorfinn) to be born. I was always conflicted about his relationship with Thorfinn, he uses him, manipulates him to get what he wants, plays with his emotions, gives him just a bit of taste of possible revange to keep him going after him, leaves him to thorkell and only helps him when his own ass is dependent on thorfinn winning but at the end just like with Atli he wishes something better for him. He wisehs that Thorfinn doesn't become like him and follow in the steps of a man he wanted to kill, like he did with his father. I can't see him as a father to Thorfinn because I have a wonderful dad and I know that true parent indeed challenges their child but also does so in much more healthy ways, but still it is very clear how for what time and beginning of their relationship these two were given, their bond was about much more than just vengeance.

The use of all black pages are very deliberate. Manga didn't always do this. The first time I saw was about 20 years ago. It didn't start but ended in pure black, and not just one or two pages, but went on and on for about 6 pages. The story ended so crazy, so claustrophobic it shook me to the core. I still think about it from time to time. (I won't mention the name of the manga in case if you two ever run into it). It was one of my all time favorite manga thrillers.

I know you covered the loss of another father figure in Thorfinn's life with Askeladd's demise, but even the medium conveys this perfectly when you look at the panel Thors dies and the panel he is holding up Askeladd dying asking what he'll do now. Thorfinn is center stage clutching them with both hands grieving in the same manner and the choice of negative space in these two panels creating nothing else in the world but him and his father figure in each really sends the message those two events aren't too far off. So good! Excited to see how he handles this loss a second time.

Indeed, the themes in this volume are gorgeous. Everything comes to a head and swells, opening up our eyes as viewers to so much ahead. I like the comments about Askeladd here, I hadn't considered those points of view beforehand. He didn't want Thorfinn to still be tied to his path of evil, especially knowing how kind and honorable his father Thors was. I have always thought that Askeladd kind of resented Thorfinn for having such a formidable father (which he never had) and still turning to a life viking. He lets go of that, and encourges his pseudo-son to venture further, to actually live a life worth living. It's so beautiful. It makes me cry every time

One thing you didn’t mention about Canute’s blow to Askeladd… am pretty sure Canute’s blow wasn’t fatal. Page 317 Askeladd says ‘is this the first time you’ve run a man through?’ Then there’s a “tug” where he pulls the sword in deeper, presumably to his heart. Then he releases the sword and utter the words ‘well done’. Am I reading that right?! Very powerful and does add something to this death scene.

The TV series reorders some scenes and adds a couple new scenes to this book all of which I think are amazing choices for both the story and the new medium and I can't recommend it enough. One of my favorite decisions in the show was to add one more scene after Askeladd's backstory where he looks back to a wrathful Thorfinn one more time and says "I should thank you for your service, you were a useful kid. i should also thank Thors." And that singular line breaks Thorfinn. And as everyone leaves the scene Thorfinn looks at the blade attached to his arm (obvious symbolism there) and sees his reflection. And through the reflection he looks at the scenes of his life as a warrior and then back to his mangled face. And just before the end of the episode he lets out an animal scream. I think this completely recontextualizes both Thorfinn and Askeladd's character and that perhaps it would have been best if Thorfinn just killed Askeladd in his sleep all those years ago and moved on. Or if he gave up the warrior's life to live with that family he betrayed. He's a character that had so many opportunities to give up the life he's been wasting for a decade. And it really puts into perspective what Askeladd means when he says "i'll teach you how to kill someone you hate." On the outside that seems like a very silly question, there's only one way to go through with something like that: by any means necessary. And that's exactly the point. Thorfinn hasn't been taking this seriously, and is too caught up in how Thors fought and died to have accomplished his goal by any means necessary. It's one of my favorite lines in the story for that reason.

What I loved about the whole duel between Bjorn and Askeladd, is that Askeladd's inner thoughts and feelings are entirely up in the air. Personally, I think his hatred for Danes didn't leave Bjorn as an exception, but he still acknowledged and was sincerely grateful for both Bjorn's loyalty and his desire to befriend him, even knowing that he hated him. So when Askeladd told Bjorn that he was his only friend, it comes from a bittersweet place. He doesn't mean it, but he still wants to respond to Bjorn's desire to be his friend, by at least giving him peace in his final moments. Even if saying it was a lie

It's interesting, as Philip mentioned often the arc of a hero beginning as somehow weak and pitiable before seizing destiny and strength being a common fictional trope, applied here to Canute and Thorfinn, but these ideas originate from real life as well.
