The thing with Nomad being able to change the shape of his dead shard blade is probably because it is still his blade, and there is some fragment of a bond between him and it still.

That could be an arugment for it, if Adolin somehow reignites a bond or connection to Maya, in the same way that a part of a connection of Aux could remain with Nomad and the blade. @@rainhunter5546

Forgive me if I'm mistaken. Like Merphy's dad, my memory isn't the greatest and I've only read 2 of the Stormlight books, however doesn't Kaladin change his shard blade into a spear in Words of Radiance because he is more use to fighting with that than a sword? Doesn't that set the tone for Nomad being able to change his shard blade? I know it's a dead blade. For that, I don't know.

I’ve been telling anyone who will listen, I really feel like this book is the first truly pure cosmere book. Like even things like lost metal and rhythm of war being much more interconnected are still distinctly Mistborn and Stormlight books. Even the other secret projects feel like distinct worlds with references. But this book doesn’t feel like that. It feels like a story about the cosmere as a whole. And I LOVE IT

It’s adorable that Merphy’s dad enthusiastically reads these books along with her.

I really liked this book but it just made me so sad. So few of Sanderson characters seem to get happy endings. Sig had a rough life before bridge 4 and knowing that gets taken away sucks. Then he loses his honor spren. Gets a high spren. Has that spren mostly killed. Has to go in the run. Find a people that take him in. Then his best friend of decades (and his only companion) fully dies. Then he needs to leave and never return. He’s truly alone now and my heart breaks for him. I hope he doesn’t lose himself further.

I think it says in the book that he accidentally used the Dawnshard ability and it ate up Aux because it needed Investiture. I also believe the events have to be in the past. The fact that the book is set decades at least, if not centuries after SA 10 (if Sanderson sticks to the timeline). Now it could be that there is a second greater larger Cosmere threat coming to Roshar, but I don’t think so.

I think it has to be centuries after Stormlight. In the book in mentioned that space travel had been developed “over the last few hundred years”. I don’t think they have starships in mistborn and SA so this book is waaaay in the future.

The fear I have for Kaladin after the way he gets mentioned in this book when Nomad sees Wit... what HAS gone down in Roshar?! I definitely read all the vague mentions of events as something that has gone down between SA4 and Sunlit Man (which I assume is based way in the future). My god, I could not be more hyped for SA5. Interesting that I agreed with so so many of the points you made, but this is actually my favourite secret project. I think it is specifically the connection to Stormlight (my favourite of the Sanderson series), the mood, the writing style, the emotional weight. I'm not too into action packed fast paced books, but I could not get enought of this one.

This was clearly a book for Cosmere fans. He dedicated it to the fans, but it was for the Cosmere fans. It was my favorite of the Secret Projects, by far, but I also love the old scene fiction books that it was clearly emulating. But I also love the Cosmere and this was clearly written for those of us who are loving trying to figure it all out.

FYI, in RoW syll and Kal have a conversation about her turning into surgeon's tools for him, so it's not a new concept, it just hasn't been explored much

It's implied to be totally possible, but everyone on Roshar is always too busy fighting to explore it. There's even a few references to Spren becoming tools in the ancient past - I believe Syl even mentions Relodar using her a tool for some purpose way back when.

The Cosmere references aren't just fun easter eggs anymore - the varying aspects of the universe are being brought together, and that's a good thing. The Cosmere IS a connected universe, and the different aspects are beginning to be wholly relevant in each new story. You don't need to understand these connections for fun, you are starting to need to have Cosmere knowledge for proper context. I think once you switch your mental perspective from considering them references and, instead, consider the Cosmere books as part of a cohesive whole, you will enjoy it more. These aren't isolated little series - they are all part of the Cosmere lore! Or I could be wrong!

I think as we continue into the Cosmere, we need to switch from seeing the connections as "easter eggs". Because more and more the connections are becoming an integral part of the storytelling. For example when we're done with Mistborn Era 3 or 4, we'll have the complete setup for a Roshar/Scadrial interplanetary war since Zellion and the Scadrian scientists seem to ellude to peace treaties between the two factions. So by this point there won't be "easter eggs", just plain cross-over.

Yeah, the days of "oh you can read this and you'll miss some easter eggs but it's okay" are mostly over. At this point, if you pick up a brand new Sanderson novel, you're essentially reading the equivalent of a Marvel Phase 2+ movie. You're expected to have read a decent chunk of what's come before, or you're going to get lost real quick.

Zellion punching a Charred like he's in anime, or absolutely dominating them to end on a somber "Bridge Four..." were easily my emotional highlights in this book. Or when he's in the storm and think he's seeing Kaladin... :c The entire storyline of Sig finding belonging in this alien world after running for so long... I can't... :'C Also !! Scadrians are there and deal in... SECRETS ??!! Kelsier will have a BIIIIIG impact on Scadrians culture as a whole in the future apparently haha ! On the world itself, we had a lecture on the laws of movement and we learnt how to make atomic fuel from people's soul. 10/10, would math my way out of a problem Zellion-style again So many Cosmere-relevant tidbits here and there too ! The perfect "fanservice" novel haha !

Also something you didn't mention, Aux is a Highspren, not an honourspren. So the implications is at some point between SA4 and Sunlit Man, Sig leaves the Windrunners and then bonds Aux and becoming a SkyBreaker. This could be linked to SA5 events, maybe an issue with Honor/HonorSpren and the Windrunners. Plus Sig managed to get shard plate in both orders, so was part of the orders for a decent amount of time. Really looking forward to finding out what happened in SA5. But wouldn't be surprised if Sunlit is maybe set even later, like SA6.

Sunlit Man 100% has to be set sometime after SA5 and possibly after SA10 because Sigzil is clearly at least a century old if not much older. He's only, what, 20-something? in the current Stormlight timeline. So it's been at least 70-80+ years if not much longer. I know there's supposed to be a pretty big timeskip between SA5 and 6 but I'm not sure exactly how much of one. So it's for sure after SA5, could be anywhere between SA5 and 10 or beyond depending on how big the timeksip is and how old he actually is.

This book seemingly took place far past SA10. As far as I could tell, it was the farthest in the future Cosmere book yet and took place at earliest during the Mistborn era 4 time frame.

It sounds a lot like the Zuko Alone episode of Last Airbender. On paper it’s a fairly standard story of a wandering man with a secret past who helps a village, they discover who he is and he is cast out again. But it is the Avatar world around it that makes it interesting

Yumi>Tress>Sunlit>Wizard. But that can change... once I reread them all. (Well Wizard will continue last). Tress it's been "so long" since I read... I want to give it another shot reading all three together and see were my feelings land.

Crazy how these are resonating differently for people. I’d rank the Cosmere books as Sunlit > Tress > Yumi. None of them were bad through. I even liked Frugal, but it’s impossible to rank with the others since it’s not Cosmere.

I am so glad you mentioned the similarities with Secret Project 2. I feel like these two books are so mirrored, it is an interesting headscratcher.

To the question of being able to change the shape of the shardblade after Aux died - deadeye spren still have a presence in the cognitive realm. Sigzil says at the end that he looked for Aux but there is nothing left in the cognitive realm, so Aux seems to be dead in a different, more serious way. That doesn't really explain why the shardblade can still change, but it at least shows that it's a different scenario than the "dead" blades that we're familiar with in Stormlight.

Remember that Deadeyes are unique to A) Roshar and B) the timeframe in which Ba-Ado-Mishrim is trapped in a Perfect Gem somewhere. Shardblades and Dead Spren in The Stormlight Archive don't work the way they should because of Ba-Ado-Mishrim's imprisonment and what that's doing to Spren bonds as a whole.

There was no broken bond Aux had his investature(soul) sucked out basically. So he was never a deadeye and "stuck" as a blade

Definitely with the folks that think he was talking about book 5. The dawnshard would not have been discovered in the novella if it wasn't going to come up. I loved this one probably my favorite of the secret projects. I like to think that that last piece of art was Zellion going to Tres's planet, a full circle ark.

Great review! I’m so excited for SA5! With regard to your questions: the dead spren shapeshifting is something Shallan probably does as well with Testament, before starting to use Pattern. It’s up for discussion when the switch happened, but my impression after Rhythm of War was already that a dead spren could change shape if still bonded to the original Radiant and this book reinforced that. Aux getting hurt definitely played a big role in Sigzil spiraling but don’t forget that something is going to happen to Sigzil’s honorspren and their oaths first. Aux is a highspren he bonded later. And the Dawnshard is thrown in there somewhere as well. I also felt like the Unity/Conquest comments mostly reflected Roshar’s past and made the Cinder King seem like a perversion of Dalinar - a mirror in a way, like this was a planet with molten rock and a fire storm, thematically drawing a comparison to Roshar.

A believe that a very important aspect of Sigzils bond is that he did not break his oaths. It was only eluded that he did and that misgiving was reinforced by both Sigzil and Aux stating that he was dead but if we remember in the stormlight archive, spren do night die like mortals and the only true "dead" spren we see are the shard blades/plate made when the knights abandoned their oaths. Aux did not die, he was only severely injured and so he could still speak and attune himself to Sigzils needs. More evidence of this is his armor was also still alive. Sigzil is still a knight but after the hosting the dawnshard, his bond was changed and so did his powers

Sanderson did a brilliant thing in placing this story who knows how many years in the future. We have no idea if this is post stormlight 5 or 10, but it still has a lot of bits of information to drive us crazy with theories until he finally releases all the books. For someone who dislikes outdoor activities, Sanderson sure knows how to hook us (this is a bad fishing analogy).

This was the first book where I felt the Cosmere connections overshadowed the book for the first half of the book for me. For the first half all I was wondering was what happened in Roshar and what's going on in the world? The questions this book poses with throwing us into the future was kind of a miss for me. It felt so reliant on those connections that plot that I didn't really care about the actual plot of the book. By the second half of the book I connected more with the characters and the world but there are still so many questions that the book poses that I really feel like it overshadows the plot of the book. It's just a massive reference fest and there is nothing wrong with it. He said he wrote this for Cosmere fans and it really makes sense after reading this book. If you are a massive fan of the Cosmere I expect you would love this book. I still think Tress is my favorite of the Secret Projects. It's so funny, Tress is a really smart and engaging main character and I cared more about the plot.

To me, that was a big point of the book. The new world and the story we got was a device to show us Nomad with glimpses into his journey and development, while also unveiling what the broader Cosmere will look like in the future. This was very fascinating to me and I think I was more interested in this compared to the general story, but I understand this may be polarizing to some. These small details allow us to speculate on will happen in the coming Cosmere books to get us to this point we are at in Sunlit. For me personally, Sunlit was like an appetizer for the future Cosmere.

Did anyone find it interesting how zellion thought he Kal even thought he had been alive longer then a normal human should. Does this mean Kal is alive as well?

This was by far my favorite of the Secret Projects. I’m excited for the future of the Cosmere and the small hints to it that we got in this book.

The moment i read that Segzal was Hoid's apprentice, I knew that he will become a worldhoper, but I never expected him to become a protagonist of his own book😊😊

I definitely thought of the talk about what happened on Roshar seemed like a distant past that we are currently unaware of. Mostly because he kind of discussed the progression of the Alethi to make it seem that the iteration we see currently in the books is a result of their past. I am very excited for book 5 and the revelations to come!

I just finish Sunlit Man and I'm probably unique in your audience as this was my first Brandon Sanderson book. I started Mistborn but put it down. I started Tess but also put it down. I've always plan to go back to them but I haven't yet. Sunlit Man was his first book that hook me mostly until I finished it. I really enjoyed it and never felt lost. I could tell there were extra context I was missing, but I could guess enough for the story to make sense to me. The scientist able to control metal didn't raise an eyebrow for me cause they are scientist inside a starship. Them having technology that can control metal made sense. Only after hearing you make a big deal out of it has me thinking about it again. I guess they have some connection/are from Mistborn. But that is not needed in this story. That they people from a different planet, that is also different from Nomad's homeworld, with advance technology is what was important to the story and easily understood. I didn't even realize Nomad was a character most readers have meet before. I just thought he was a new character with lots of connections to the cosmere lore and will eventually play a bigger role on the setting. It wasn't until the postscript where Brandon refer to him with a name that never shows up in the novel that I realize the reader should have known who this guy is. And yet I still think the novel does a great job making the Cosmere lore great for those that know it and not make it a barrier to enjoy for those that don't know it.

I personally suspect that a lot of the references we're getting is stuff that happens not in Stormlight 5, but Stormlight 10. I think Sunlit happens far in the future! Part of that thought comes from the end of TLM, the epilogue scene where MeLaan is implied to be helping refugees around Roshar. I believe THAT was a scene that we were seeing Stormlight 5 fallout, which i suspect is a bit further in the past purely due to scadrian technology levels.

It took me a little bit to connect what Nomad meant by having belonged to two orders. But Sigzil's is a Skybreaker in Sunlit man. He broke his oath as a Windrunner and killed his original Honor Spren some time in the past. That doesn't bode well for SA5.

I think the reason that Nomad is able to use his sword in different ways is because previously when spren died they became deadeye. I think that was the unintended consequences of imprisoning Ba Ado Mishram. While when Aux dies the spren is not a deadeye

Or how Shallan broke her oath and "killed" Testament. Aux was "killed" by the Dawnshard using up investiture like the Machine did to Yumi's people.

Can only change form and technically can't be destroyed.. kinda like how a splintered shard can eventually over millennia coalesce into new beings, so even if AuX's personality/soul is gone, their essence still resides to some degree in the blade

Yeah, we actually don't know about how Spren die "normally". We only see the "corrupted" version of spren death because of the whole Ba-Ado-Mishram fiasco.

I initially thought Nomad was one of the heralds but the more I read , the more I realized he was one of Bridge Four. I just couldn’t for the life of me remember exactly which one. In my defense it’s been a while since I read stormlight archive… I admit I was shocked at the revelation though. I may re-read before SA 5 comes out…

There is a bad storm coming in SA5 😰 We also got hints as to what happens to fifth ideal radiants.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason your dad was able to enjoy it more was because he is less cosmere aware and because of that the cosmere parts didn't overwhelm the story. Because even though I love cosmere stuff and the implications and such, I loved the book and not because of the cosmere stuff but because I loved Nomad and this inner turmoil that he's experiencing along with this cool world to explore. It kind of sounds like although you enjoyed all of those things, that because you knew Nomad's past and all the references that your focus was taken away from the story to instead focus on other implications. Could be completely wrong, but just some thoughts I had as this will be an issue for the whole fandom as I think a lot of people are divided on the whole cosmere connections becoming more part of the story.

What you wanted was a mix of Brandon Sandersons worldbuilding and magic systems with Becky Chambers sociological exploration....

I knew who he was the chapter Wit showed up in the book. 1. He first thought it was "Kal" and that was an obvious clue that Nomad was someone from bridge 4 2. He had had a teacher-apprentice relationship with Wit and that's obviously Sigzil Obvious clues. Just saying

The differences in the behavior of sprens and blades could have relation with Bado A Mushram being released probably in Book 5?

If its a hit then maybe they will make a book about the world and culture of the world...ala the world of ice and fire.

Anyone else notice how the specific comments on Rosharans by the Scadrian scientist was “oh, you have a blade. Must be a mercenary” or something of the sort? Implied him being a sword for hire for sure

I read sunlit man before I read stormlight and I still enjoyed the story without knowing any of the conections some stuff like aux did confuse me but the story itself was still amazing to me so i don't think it relies on the connections too much.

As far as I remember Kalidin has used Syl as different weapons (he just prefers a spear) and the idea of the Shard Blades is they are dead spren that can ONLY be manifested in a particular form. What changed here (perhaps because of the spren's final willing sacrifice?) is Zellion can STILL manifest a shard weapon in whatever manner he chooses.

Personally I think this book eludes to both events that have already happened and events that will happen in SA5 and onwards for instance Sigzil’s mistake he made as a leader is something we have not seen as well as his breaking of oaths. Personally I think this book backs up my own thoughts that Kal is not gonna make it through book 5 but I could be wrong still. Overall I really enjoyed this book. It’s hard to say if I prefer this one or Yumi more. I will say that while I thought having Wit’s POV as charming for SP 1 and 3 I preferred Sigzil’s POV though when it came to Wit his POV may have been lighter due to the nature of stories themselves.

Based on Sigzil's comments in Sunlit Man, it would seem that Dalinar lost the challenge. Such an ending would be totally different than how Brandon usually ends his series. Yet that is such a change I could see him making. This is the opposite of the Vin trilogy where it starts off in a world of despair. On the other hand, Brandon likes to zig when others zag. I could see him dropping hints of a disaster ending (in world disaster, not quality of work) and then having a complete misdirection.

I think Dalinar will fail as well, I think something catastrophic will happen to the investiture on Roshar, i.e. Storm light will fail hence the name Stormlight Archive

Dalinar fails, and someone/something intervenes to prevent total calamity…but at a huge cost, maybe a 30 year break for the time skip, to either lick wounds or prepare for an even harder final battle in the second half of the series

I kind of figured it was Sigzil when they described him as dark skinned and he said “Storms!” I confirmed it when he mentioned something about organization or something. I really enjoyed this book but now I’m just like okay so wtf happened with Sigzil and the Dawnshard?! 🙃

I think the dawnshard affected his personality.

I had fun with the book, but felt I was missing a lot of references having only read Mistborn Era 1 and Stormlight Archive 1-4.

Not really. This book takes place probably hundreds of years into the future of current day Stormlight. What you felt you were missing is just events we don't know about yet even with everything out at the moment. The only thing you missed by not being up to date with Mistborn is linked to the Scadrian scientists. But that's very minor as a connection, since just like with Stormlight, it's taking place hundreds of years into Era 2's future. The most you missed is probably by not having read Dawnshard. But even then we don't learn much. Just the very basics of what a Dawnshard is.

Regarding blade changing shape, I was thinking it was linked to how he "died", because did Aux technically die? We know spren can be killed (avoiding too many extended spoilers) and that's different from breaking of oaths that cause deadeye Spren. Aux had his investiture ripped away by the Dawnshard, not a common occurrence in of itself so thats what makes me think why we've not heard about blades that can change before. Aux then only "survived" by his personality remaining with the last of his investiture. Aux gave Sig his remaining investiture that made up his personality, but didn't he also say he'd leave behind his blade? So maybe the blade still holds some investiture which then allows it to change shape? And there's room for this to all be allowed to work within Cosmere lore/logic because it's not something we've really come across before? So Sigs blade is a form of shardblade we've not seen before? Maybe 😅

I read the events of Roshar to be from the next 5 Stormlight books, rather than Stormlight 5. Sigzil was around 38 when he took on the Dawnshard. I don't think he's THAT old in our current timeline. So I assumed the references to the Rosharan conflict was something that happened when he was much older (I assume he's closer to Kaladin's age).

I think aux being "dead" is less dead in the sense of a deadeye from broken oaths and instead hes dead in a different way if that makes sense. Ie it wasnt the trauma of broken oaths but rather literally being burned as fuel

I hope they eventually figure out how to power up spren and stop just killing them off

I was and am still very very confused about the relationship to spren how it’s possible. How aux was alive. What exactly the dawkshard was and did.

Aux being a Highspren, not an Honorspren was interesting. Either he got an honorspren that was killed by the anti-Stormlight developed in RoW, then maybe Hoid hooked him up with a Highspren? Idk. Interested to see how we get to that point.

There are some words of Brandon that suggest that the death of the spren during the recreance is different than how spren normally die due to breaking the bond. Something is going wrong in the unique way that creates dead eyes. I think that is not what's happening with aux.

I wish I had reread Stormlight before this… I don’t remember Sigzil… 😭😭

I don't remember if it was in a book or one of Sanderson spoiler things or if it was a theory that was said in a book, but dead shard blades. As long as they're used by the same person who broke the oath. I'm pretty sure have the same abilities to change shape. It could also be that he's dead, not from breaking oaths, but from having his energy drained so he might not be a dead eye.

Also side note, the way that he talks about his oats being broken made it seem like that he broke his oaths before the dawnshard killed auxiliary. So I wonder if they have figured out a way to essentially quit being a radiant without creating more dead eyes

Ok kinda late here, this book was not one of my favorites and I agree to the things you said about the plot and it being more cosmere references based than a book by itself, but anyways I think that the events Sigzil is talking about in Roshar, might not even be in the series. Maybe they happen years after the events in the Stormlight Archive? Or maybe in the next arc he is writing (if that's still happening. I remember Stormlight consisting of two arcs and not only these first five books we have now with Wind and Truth).

I wonder, since in the Arcanum Sanderson says that Threnody has stuff based on Jewish culture and customs, if this one also had some Jewish connections. Considering it's about exiled people, who are on the run in a desert chased by someone who wants to convert and eliminate them all. And they worship Adonalsium, the original god of all (whose name is Hebrew-ish as well).

Wait.. so did we already know Hoid held the dawnshard? Or was that revealed here?

There's a line that people is not giving enough attention: "You didn’t do anything when my friends and I were dying to arrows all those years ago. I went to Damnation then, and you sat around playing a flute" Maybe they go to braize in book 5?

I agree that the cosmere is slowly consuming the cosmere stories. They're getting less development, less plot, less actual story to them. This started with the lost metal. I wanted to know about Wax and Wayne and their stuff, but the cosmere was all the time taking the attention away from the characters and scadriel. To be completely honest, in some ways, the cosmere would be better if it had less cosmere in it.

I think it's all a matter of taste. I eat that stuff up, but I get how many people just want their stories to be stories.

I recently got pretty much caught with all the Cosmere stories. I purposely ignored the the crossovers and Easter eggs because I didn't want the multiversal aspects of it to supercede the individual stories and narratives. So far I think Sanderson has done a fairly decent job at adding just enough info to spark intrigue without drowning out the stories with lore and connections. But i agree, I think some of the fandom just wants more lore and instead of focused narratives. I'd just hate to see the Cosmere devolve into what the MCU has become post endgame lmao

I got it was Sigzil pretty early on. I was very surprised to learn Aux is a Highspren, and not Sigs Honorspren. What happened for him to leave the Windrunners, and join the Skybreakers? Is he a "good" Skybreakers? Another interesting tidbit. Was when aux connected him to Wit... he for a moment thought it was Kaladin. This means Kaladin is probably around yet, in one shape or another. He also says he can't go back to his friends... like it is still a possibility. But it's been at least 100 years since Stormlight 5, probably more. So there must still be members of Bridge Four alive and well.

Why does every video start as if we just walked in on someone off screen just finishing a funny joke? Can we not hear the joke, too? Why can't we ever hear the joke?
