I haven't read any Sagas since I was young, but in my memory the impression is that some of them were pretty exaggerated. In some protagonists feats of strength and battle. When I saw Vinland Saga it felt perfectly in theme. Felt like perfect extension of the old sagas, to put them in manga form.

I find that the exaggerated nature of manga is very much a perfect fit for the norse myths in which it is based, because the norse myths themselves regularly exaggerate human feats of strength etc, as do most myths and folklore. I'm unsure of what the technical term would be in English, but in my junior high school years in Norway, we actually covered this at length. I think it was called "ironic exaggeration" or something to that effect, and referred to how Viking lore and legends routinely write in a kind of low-key and matter-of-factly way about things that clearly aren't humanly possible. One story, that I still remember involved a duel between two Icelanders, where one cuts off the arm of the other. The man who just lost his hand is "tired" and asks his opponent if they can't settle by the lake and have a drink before they continue. They do so, take a breather and go back to killing each other. Obviously, in real life, you get your arm cut clean off and you'll bleed to death in minutes unless you do something drastic about the wound. But, in the story, it's presented as if it's no biggie. In this sense, I feel as if Vinland Saga being a manga almost makes it more similar to an actual viking saga than had it strived much more for realism.

Also on the bit about the tendency of manga to exaggerate human strength... That's true but also, I find that it works really well with Vinland Saga specifically, as it's common in these eddas and sagas to paint the characters as these larger than life figures while recounting their feats and legend. It's likely coincidental more than anything, but in this case the exaggeration actually feels in spirit with the source material which I think is a cool added element when analyzing this story.

An experienced anime/manga fan probably saw it coming and I wasn't floored by surprise when I saw it but I was quite sad. Thank you so much! None you my friends read the Vinland Sega manga so discussion on this manga is something I'm currently deprived of for almost 3 years (binge read all the right after the anime ended) It was interesting to learn those nuggets of historical information as well (plus I can say leif correctly now) and learning exactly where Yukimura took creatively liberties. I do have a complaint though.... IT'S ONLY 32 min and 49 sec. Ma'am Vinland Sega is minimum 2 hours person involved in discussion (so at least 4 hours here) lol. Honestly though i would love to here you guys discuss every single character up into this point how you feel about them. Even characters like Helga and Bijorn even though they kind of take a backseat in the first book. I feel though that would help expand the conversation that much more. Now you probably thinking "he's being a little greedy". And I'm here to tell you absolutely! Really though love the video and thanks again especially if you actually read all of this cause I had no intention of making this comment so long lol.

It's like a window opened through time, in a way that I hadn't experienced before despite having already read and enjoyed most of the more famous Icelandic sagas. I think that I have to disagree with Murphy here because I think Thors failed. He realized he wasn't perfect saying that if he was a true warrior he would never have needed his sword or to even have used violence. And we see thorfinn surpass him in this way later at the end of the slave arc. And with thorfinn he succeeded in planting the seeds of his philosophy but in the most important ways, he failed thorfinn and the tragic part is him knowing that as he died. He failed Thorfinn because his main goal was to teach thorfinn these things about life without making him have to go through the horrors that he did. And in the end he succeeded but in his whole goal he failed. And I think part of that is to show that this value in life and refusal of violence isn't something you can really just teach through words. And I think he was doing well to teach this through his actions but still we see both his son and daughter don't understand and often ended up being disappointed in what they saw in their father back in Iceland (thorfinn hearing that his father ran, and Ylva hating him for saving the slave) but we see that this either was taught or was already learned by his wife seemingly without going through the same kind of suffering that both thors and thorfinn had to.

Philip loves grimdark fantasy, and has read way more graphic material than Berserk. But what he really loves is the character development and themes that get explored because of that horrible trauma. Berserk is amazing when it comes to Guts and a couple other characters. But it does rely on shock value in other parts. For instance there's a scene where village women get kidnapped by Orcs, and for multiple days ... you can guess the rest, and when Guts eventually saves them, they're all like "k thanks bye we can take it from here!" And they just leave and we never see them again. Scenes like that would probaby drive Philip crazy. Miura even said he regretted relying on sexual violence for repetitive drama as much as he did in the early parts of the story. Philip would probably just roll his eyes at a character like Wyld who is just edgy.

The fact that you seem to love this kind of narrative based on historical stories makes me think that you'd really love the "Kingdom" manga as well, which is a fictional retelling about the Warring States period of China, and the unification of China into one country. The author similarly has cut-ins throughout the series referencing some of his sources, or explaining what 'really' happened in those days, rather than how it happened in his story. It can be quite battle-heavy, and often focuses on the logistics and strategies of large scale, pre-black-powder warfare, but it's still an incredibly compelling story nonetheless.
