Viggo Mortensen Deflects a Real Knife!

Ойын-сауық

Viggo deflects a knife
Did you know, in Lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring, during the fight scene between Lurtz and Aragon, two pretty badass things happen, and they were both unscripted.
The first of which is when Lurtz licks the blood from his sword. This was not in the script, but when the actor did it, it looked awesome, and they kept it in the film.
The second unscripted moment is when Lurtz throws his dagger directly at Aragon's face. Lurtz WAS supposed to throw his dagger at Aragon, but it was supposed to miss by a good deal, and later with the help of a different camera angle, they would make it look like it was a much closer call than it was. However, the actor playing Lurtz completely misjudged his aim and ended up throwing a metal prop knife directly at Viggo head.
Thankfully due to Viggos quick reflexes and apparently samurai like swordsman skills, he deflected the knife and no camera trickery was needed.
Peter Jackson of course kept this in the film, as its one of the coolest and most authentic scenes throughout the entire saga.

@@Matt_Alaric I dunno, it's such an extremely specific action that only ever really happened once in the entire trilogy, so it seems way too out of line to train for in particular. However, on the flipside, swordsmanship training does really help with reacting to incoming blows from specific angles, so it was likely more of an unintended but welcome benefit. Either way the guy's a true chad for getting into his role to such a deep point.

Viggo had no idea who Aragorn was before he took on the role. He asked his young son who he was and his son made his mind up for him right there and then, as his son was a big fan of LOTR and loved the character of Aragorn. Viggo pretty much agreed to take the role after that. Thank God his son was an LOTR fan.

When Frodo was stabbed by the spear from the troll, his reaction is genuine as they were supposed to stab him with a rubber prop spear but instead accidently used the solid metal prop. That scene where the Witch King gets stabbed in the face was meant to use camera trickery, with the stab actually missing his head by a wide margin and edits making it seem as though the blow had landed. However, the actor in question misjudged their cues and actually stabbed him in the face, killing the extra in question. The result was very effective though, so Peter Jackson made the executive decision to leave it in.

they will... you forget that before this, there was Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A Space Oddessy, Clash of the Titans, Ben Hur, Metropolis, and a Trip To The Moon, to state just a very select few movies that have this kind of passion and dedication. I mean there is one scene in The Shining where Stanley Kubrick demanded 127 takes of a single scene to get it absolutely correct, while Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights" with the blind girl took 342 takes. Don't forget how much Ryan Reynolds fought the system to make Deadpool a reality. If you think there will never be this kind of passion again, you're wrong. There will always be the next person who demands absolute perfection from themselves and/or from others, and will not be satisfied until it exists. We may wait decades to see it again, or it may be tomorrow... but to say never? you've never exposed yourself to people to find people *with* passion... my best friend (a man in his mid-50's) is working on his first 2600-mile hike, while I (woman in mid 40's) have picked up boxing (a sport where you're considered "too old to begin" in your 20's) with eyes on eventually being competitive. Passion comes from being discontent with the status quo... and there are a lot of passionate people in this world, but not all of them make movies. Give it time, and even "One does not simply walk into Mordor" will be as forgotten as "Rosebud" is to younger generations, and "Aragorn" will be a passing name that sounds familiar but you can't place the movie he's from, the same as "Sam Spade" is now. ...and you, Lego Batman, will look at your first gray hairs in the mirror, wondering where the time went, when a child goes and says "this new movie, there will never be another actor this passionate, another director who is this much of a fan, another genius to grace the silver screen", and you look back and remember LOTR, but then also remember the passion that drove Avatar, Marvel Cinematic Universe, or Jurassic Park... the movies of your youth... and realize the passion had been there all the long... and it's still there.

Viggo is the definition of "in the moment". It's one of the most important lessons to learn as an actor and it's truly hard to master, to forever be in the moment. It won't make you the greatest actor but it always makes you present in the scene. If he didn't have this, he probably takes a knife to the face, probably loses all the takes he had special reactions to the pain he was feeling, but then again, that's why actors go through training.

Additional, Viggo almost drowned at the scene where he is swept unconscious in the river, because the REAL armor, gear and cape was too heavy and made him sink too much underwater and swept away with the strong currents. Instead of crying for Help, Viggo held his breath risking his life, to make the scene complete. Until he came back to the surface. (The rescue teams were way too far). Viggo also broke two toes from kicking a real metal helmet a dozen times, he used the pain to shout out a roar of anguish and mental pain at the loss of the hobbits. Then collapsed, and it was only after the director said cut, that they realized Viggo was seriously injured and in pain. IIRC he also made the famous The Two Towers run scene across the mountains - with his injuries (broken toes).

I've read the books twice but I'm going to say I prefer the films. Honestly, it was great that they cut out all the weird philosophical shit in the book like meeting Tom Bombadil which just detracts from the main thread of the storyline. Also, in the books after they destroy the ring, that's not the end as Saruman takes over the Shire and the hobbits have to fight to back Hobbiton. The books are proper weird lol.

@@mr.stuffdoer8483 It really isn't. I mean, it is, but it also isn't. It's very fitting and also something that happened to many soldiers during WWI. Returning home and finding it... changed. Twisted, maybe even broken. Only that the soldiers usually can't change anything about it, whereas the Hobbits could and did. A redditor put it nicely: "It's not an anticlimax so much as a counter-climax, a second seemingly low-stakes climax after the high-stakes battle is already fought and won. It's sort of like Odysseus's return to Ithaca only to have to prove himself to his own wife, who doesn't recognize him. And much like the end of The Odyssey, The Scouring is actually the higher-stakes climax because in some ways it brings into question the value of everything the characters have fought for. All you ever wanted was to get back home and resume your normal life, but upon arrival you realize you can never truly go back. You have to fight for what should be rightfully yours and as you fight you realize that things can never really be the same again. That's real, and that's why The Scouring is such a significant part of the book for so many." www.reddit.com/r/tolkienfans/comments/72ic3w/whats_your_opinion_of_the_chapter_the_scouring_of/dniw974/?context=3
