I red a book about The Winter War between Finland and The Soviet Union in 1939. There was a description of an incident that stuck with me for some reason: Finnish soldiers had captured some russian soldiers and was checking their pockets and packs for weapons and usable items. On one of the soldiers they found a pair of woman’s shoes. The finns laughed and asked the soldier why he was carrying these shoes with him. The russian told them he had been out shopping shoes for his wife (a task which probably consisted of standing many hours in line). On the way back home he had been picked up by recruiters and pressed into army service. Within days he found himself at the frontline. It seems little has changed in russian mentality and their disregard for the individual is hard to comprehend for westeners. Churchill said «Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma» but he also said «Russia is never as strong as she looks; Russia is never as weak as she looks.» It will be an interesting winter to put it mildly.

I have an ex-stepson who did the year military service in Russian airborne a couple years ago. No idea about his training, but he was paid something like $30/month, and much of that was siphoned off for his unit's shared or "community" costs (not sure what that was). So, I sent him some money every month. He spent it on going to the surrounding town when on leave and eating fresh fruit. almost the worst part is the dumb luck and chaos involved. once the recruiters catch you its 50/50 if you are sent to the office, beaten and put in jail for disobeying or sent home. and apparently in some areas the officers have decided to send unfit people back home while others are sending everyone on the battlefield. i mean if the constriction was equal no matter what the policy id think the men sent to fight and die would be more unionized and willing. and ofc this means that some men die and survive based on simple luck, if they lived in the next town or even next zip code theyd survive or get sent to hell. perhaps the deciding factor might even be that youre at the recruitment grounds on monday morning with the monday morning officer instead of the wednesday evening officer. or any other factor. its like getting kidnapped by some criminals and you try to survive by any means but any variable can mean anything

In "The Gulag Archipelago," Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn tells the story of a train that leaves Moscow with enough leather to make 10,000 pairs of boots that are to be made by prisoners in the gulags of Far Eastern USSR. The leather travels along the Trans-Siberian Railway, the longest continuous rail line in the world. However, at each stop the cargo is inspected and the manifest is signed off attesting to leather to make 10,000 pairs of boots. But, each apparatchik must have his "beak" sweetened, so a bit of leather is "confiscated." By the time the train reaches the gulag, the manifest says 10,000, but there is only enough leather in the rail cars for 7,500 pairs of boots. The inmates make 7,500 pairs, but only 5,000 get loaded into the rail cars by the time the railroad people and the prison commandants get their "beaks sweetened." At each return stop the cargo is inspected and the apparatchiks "beaks" are sweetened. When the train returns to Moscow, the manifest says that 10,000 pairs of boots are on board and accounted for in the manifest. But only 2,500 pairs of boots are in the rail cars. Since no one wants to be blamed for stealing 7,500 pairs of boots, the manifest is stamped "All accounted for" as 2,500 pairs of boots are put into the warehouse. That is how you "lose" 100,000 military uniforms in Russia.

First of all, the truly brave ones are the UKRAINIANS. It is estimated that 70-75%% of Russians support Putin and the atrocities/war crimes of his barbaric and kleptocratic regime. Of the 20-25% remaining (comprising millions of people) just a few THOUSAND protesters came out (not hundreds of thousands, not millions .... just a few thousand) ..... so what, maybe less than 1% of Russians? The remaining 24% of the "silent opposition" are doing what they do best and have been doing for decades, staying silent, too afraid to fight for their rights (unlike the Ukrainians)...... and most don't care about rights unless it affects them directly. So now that it directly affects the “silent opposition” what do they do??? …… what they have done best so far ….. flee instead of fight for their rights ….. cowards. The majority of Russians running scared didn't give a crap about the atrocities in Ukraine .... until now .... they should NOT be allowed in to Europe .... stay in your Russia and learn to fight for your rights you cowards! The Ukrainians did it and are doing it, what is your excuse??? Full respect to those about 1% of Russians who actually have courage and stay and protest. If all the hundreds of thousands of Russian cowards running for the borders had instead gone to protest in Moscow they might have already been well on their way to toppling the Putin regime.

I've been told in several training scenarios that tampons are great for stopping bleeding from things like bloody/broken noses or gunshot wounds. I think that the main point of concern is that they're resorting to "ask all your female aquaintances to send you tampons, because we don't have enough resources to treat your wounds otherwise."

They aren’t though, it’s a myth that persists because it sounds right - but isn’t. The gauze used to treat deep wounds like those from gun shots has a coagulation agent in it so blood will clot and stop flowing out, preventing bloodloss. It also won’t expand like a tampon does - you don’t want it to expand and rip the round open even more!

When i was in the military in the mid 70s, after basic training and certain tech schools i was in my mind prepared for anything. We had all that you would need to operate efficiently in combat scenarios. After ending up in a special ops unit we trained all the time if not deployed missionwise. I cannot imagine any trooper in any military unit placed in a combat theatre with just mere basic training in todays world. So no training what-soever is simply "forced" suicide. When those 300,000 troops are chewed up in short order the Russian people will have a decision to make if not before but putin must be removed from power and those olagarchs that prop him up need to be handed a rifle and sent to the line or at least have what they have stolen returned to the citizens.
