Video Game Marketing is Dead

The time when you're looking ahead and excited for a new release is an experience to not forget about. I remember a time of looking forward to a sequel or new franchise from the incredible marketing built around it. I remember most games not stretching out hype for MANY years.

@@narutobroken You must have many fingers on your hand then, I have to agree with @sirkingjames4656. In the past year alone I have been very excited for several games that I bought day 1 and those have either met or exceeded my expectations. Games like Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2, Helldivers 2, Armored Core 6, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, Xenonauts 2, maybe forgetting one or two. Right now I am most excited for Into the Radius 2, which I almost cannot wait to play. Gaming is not all about the major franchises and newest releases, want an multiplayer FPS that is slow and tactical? Insurgency Sandstorm. Want Singleplayer or Co-op and breaching rooms? Ready or Not has you covered. You want an FPS with exploration and inventory management? Blood West. Good games are still coming out. You just need to find them.

Nintendo has been killing it. Pikmin 4, TOTK, Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, Splatoon 3, Xenoblade 3... There are a lot of great games nowadays from multiple companies. Biggest issues are lack of direction, bloated budgets and crunch. It's a miracle how good X-Defiant and Hi-Fi Rush are.

The last AAA game I was hyped for was Borderlands 3. It was the last time I can remember having genuine excitement and hyped for playing. Couldn't wait and replayed every previous game leading up to it's launch. Then I played it. While the gameplay was massively improved the story was significantly deproved. I tried going along with it but after...a certain death (if you know you know), I lost almost all remaining joy I was having and quickly became miserable while finishing the rest of the story. I purchased the special edition of the game but only played 2 of the 4 story DLC's before I got bored and left. I remember finishing them later but by then, I was completely disconnecting from the game itself and I felt like a spectator while playing. That amongst other reasons (never forget the nerfpocalypse), is why I never got hyped for another game ever again to this day. Not even GTA VI is bringing that level of hype for me. What I realized because of BL3 was that while gameplay is important, the story will always be just a tad bit more. Story matters the most and determines replayability. And while even critical like me praise the gameplay for the most part, the thought of replaying the story to enjoy the gameplay is simply unappealing and not worth it.

Borderlands 3 is such a sad case. The good parts of the game are insanely good. Things like the music is outstanding. Animations are so creative and well done. Visual effects and the some of the art style are amazing. But then you have everything around that. Sad case.

@@lukedstaten EXACTLY! I grew up with the damn franchise and it feels like I, a legacy fan, was booted out of the party. I actually get berated by extremely toxic people saying "but you are just wrong" and then they go on some spiel while the only game in the series to get updates now has a PVP sandbox SMALLER than Halo 3 or Reach. Most of the previous entry weapons aren't even available to use, and as the taxi driver of the team, I felt saddened by the lack of team-oriented vehicles in the sandbox and so many maps that harmed the fun of using vehicles (plus fragile vehicles too!).

There was a time before the curse of annual releases where creators took their time to create original games. GTA always surpassed themselves after each release, surprising us every time in a good way, just like Assassin's creed before Unity. You could feel that by playing . Now, even if this year's Call of duty or Assassin's creed are objectively better than the ones of our generation, they will still be seen as inferior because they couldn't reproduce the initial impact that the old games had on us. Great video, you're speaking for all of our generation !

There was a period of time where, despite games being disappointing for years, we still got hyped. Right around 2019, games took a turn from disappointing and buggy, to downright unforgivably bad. There were still people holding on hope, believing games most thought to be bad as good, but most people were losing hope. I still hold out hope for Call of Duty longer than I should have. Blame Truth kept telling everyone to stop preordering games and stop buying them. I didn't listen. I still bought the new MW2. Then I realized that despite the camo challenges being easy, I totally lost interest in playing it, so I stopped. I haven't played new cod since.

The actual quality is taking a massive dive. I dusted off the old xbox 360 library, all of these titles I played were physicals on an xbox 360 not connected to the internet, so I can have the 1.0 experience, and I can absolutely confirm that game francises like Assassin's creed, Halo, COD, and more were better back then than compared to now! I also feel like I need to point out that there are even more inactive franchises now than ever, Rock Band, Guitar Hero (Yeah, I am surprised both haven't had anything new in a while), Fable, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Rayman, Castlevania, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark, and more have not had brand new outings in at least a decade, potentially even more. Wanna know how many console generations that is? 2, soon to be 3 (especially 3 if it is a wii game, since we are likely to see the switch 2 before the ps6 or the next xbox). THATS WAY TOO LONG FOR THESE GOOD GAMES!

You look at a lot of the games and when you look at the advertisement and marketing the effort that was put into those categories usually ends up being like mad world or believe as a conception. On the other end, there's also triple-a games that. Like batman for instance the series it's got some of the best trailers, we dont get that anymore

I remember getting so hyped when cs go came out, and then when cs2 came out, I was like, "This is cool, but... it's not that big of a jump in visuals from 1.6->source->go." Plus, that game is a mess now because people care more about weapon skins than the actual gameplay. At least, that's the vibe I get from it. Which is unfortunate. 1.6 was my comfort game as a kid now. cs just seems like competitive, only gambling skin sweatfest, and the casual audience left a long time ago. Even something like halo infinite dropped the ball by catering to esports style game play and killed off the chance of gathering a large casual audience. I was so hyped for infinite man, and it didn't live up to it. It's in a good place now but it feels too late.

  • @JamesTDG

Honestly, the fact that CS has devolved so much actually stopped me from getting into the game. Also, I must concur, these companies focusing hard on esports without giving a reason for casuals to play is not good. People who play on comp servers only do so because they can build skills in social servers, it is essentially the big playground that helps people find new strats to use in comp. Before they absolutely ruined krunker, I used to enjoy the social part so much that I actually got into playing comp and did pretty well in it!

I live in a third world country. Back in 2020 we were barely surviving. there was Covid, An almost 100% inflation, lots of riots and protests, and there was always an internet, water or electricity outage caused by the government. We had nothing to enjoy in our lives, we still don't. Except videogames and movies, those were the only forms of entertainment that we could enjoy by pirating them. i always dreamed of having a decent pc that could run new AAA games since 2016. But well, here a mid range Graphics card costs as much as the average monthly salary. One of the games that i always wanted to play was Cyberpunk. Since i watched that 48 minute gameplay demo, there wasn't a day that i didn't dream about playing it one day. And finally, 3 days after it's release, i did whatever i could to buy a 1650S and just immerse myself in night city. i loved that dystopian setting, probably because it feels real, it resonates with this shithole that we live in. So i downloaded it as soon as i could, launched the game, spent an hour customizing my character, and..... After that, i was just fucking disappointed. Nothing was barely close to what they showed us. these games were the only things we had in our lives, and they were taken from us. Same thing happened to many of my friends who were hyped for TLOU2 and Death stranding. After Cyberpunk, i couldn't trust any comapny. I lost all my hype for Dying Light 2 and BF 2042. Nowadays i barely turn on my pc, i'v just lost my interest in videogames.

Halo really was the benchmark: the "Do you wonder what's out there" TV Spot, Chopin's Raindrop while the camera pans around the diorama - Chief animates as the camera pulls in. Hell, even We Are ODST went hard, with the russian(?) melancholic chanting song playing as it shows the full combat life of the Private from the beginning. Where did all those people who made those go? It's not just getting older. There is a felt lacking of earnestness, creativity and love of the property. Are games made and/or marketed by people who would play those same games otherwise? Seems less likely nowadays...

If every time you went on a first date it went was terrible, You wouldn't be excited to go on first dates. That is how the game industry has become for new games. almost Every launch has massive flaws. I dont buy games until they are 50% off or at least 6 months to 1 year past launch. I literally just Wishlist things so I can track the price and not forget about it. You enjoy games so much more this way I HIGHLY advise it.

The issue is that back then, there were a lot more good games than there were bad games, meanwhile, now the good games are the rare ones. You notice the two examples you used where hype was still in play were Bethesda and Rockstar? What do they have in common? They barely release games so the last time they released them was before this shift to this modern crashing industry began. The last GTA game was 2013. We have no idea with how much the studio has changed if they do still got it or not, but they did last time they did one... 11 years ago. And Bethesda as well, the last times they released a game in either of their series was 2011 and 2015 respectively (and that 2015 one wasn't even that great already) but it's been so long you're going off of just those old things they did because we have no idea what to otherwise expect. The gaming industry is crashing and has been going down for years. We just need to wait for the crash to actually finish happening and hope those who rise up from the ashes are better for it.

For me, the last game i was truly exited by was infinite. I would watch videos, analyse trailers and theories on what this game could be. It was so fun to just be excited. Then the first game play dropped and my excitement dropped. From that point on i knew that this isnt going to be the game i was waiting for. But oh boy was i in for a surprise. The game made me feel some emotions i have never felt before. It was the biggest disappointment i have ever felt with video games. I remember playing the multiplayer and being hit with disappointment after disappointment. The game felt strange. It looked like halo but felt so off. It felt cheap. The store, my lord the store. I thought to myself, "Story, thats where its at!" It came out, i played it all in one day and didnt feel anything. And that first tutorial you get. Oh my god it felt like a marvel writer wrote it. To this day, infinite is my most hated game i have ever looked forward to and i have a resentment for that company. I genuinely dont think halo could be in a worse spot than it is now. For me, if a new halo is announced, the chances of me buying it are close to none as long as the 343i logo is on it. Even though i know its non nonsensical, it frustrates me seeing people defend it, when the company that makes it literally disposes you. £40 bundles. £70 to recreate my reach spartan. Zero content in a live service game. Literal satan company.

All these developers are leaving their companies more than ever because publishers just want them to create cash generators instead of quality products. It’s impacting all entertainment like tv and film. Fuck what the consumer wants, just give them stuff that will make more money.
