The Simpler Era in COD Zombies
A time of anxiety, experimental fun, horror, and generally simpler times in the Call of Duty Zombies experience. This era stands out from future eras and takes place mainly in World at War and Black Ops 1 where the experience was first carving itself a spot in the industry.

@MarcoStyle - This video took a lot of inspiration off his "The Creation, Evolution, and Exhaustion of Call of Duty Zombies" as I thought it was one of the most well-done videos I have ever seen. He's got some high production value that I want to chase for. So some of the editing may seem inspired because of his. I fell hard for the echo reverb effect he threw onto the zombie screams and quotes from our characters making a dramatic cutoff that then transitions onto the next scene.

Classic zombie is still the only zombies I play. The theme of your doom slowly approaching is really reflected in the music Easter eggs. The new ones look so goofy with cartoonish villains and making the OG characters good guys. I liked when they were their own brand of evil, and the idea that they deserved this, but also “fuck you I refuse to die” motif.
@Peterphoskytos
5 ай бұрын
That's the main reason I had that same feeling on MotD. Suddenly we weren't main characters. We were prisoners who simply said FY and refused to go down without a fight. Them dying in the cutscene rlly adds to the "this is a last performance before they die" and I'd imagine the cutscene. Yes there was the afterlife thing but I kind of just ignored it. At the end of the day, we were stuck there doomed to die. It wasn't the same atmosphere, but it was a good reminder of that og feeling zombies gave me
@Shiggy_
5 ай бұрын
@@Peterphoskytos ya they should’ve kept going with that. I understand you can’t just keep making it about the OG characters. But having different types of bad guys to play would’ve kept the theme. Like maybe a North Korean reeducation camp, Vietnam war or even an Iraq war themed one. Make the characters the worst people from both sides. Just like they did with WAW. I mean in the OG waw. Tank actually did collect Japanese body parts (which was a problem among American soldiers), Nikolai really did murder his wives when he got bored of them, and Takeo and Richofen don’t need much explaining lol.
they made zombies too easy. took away the satisfaction of making it to higher rounds. bring back the simpler times
I think once blundell fully took over zombies the mode began to fall drastically, despite it starting strong with Origins it’s what ultimately began the downfall of zombies as a whole with the unnecessary reboot of the timeline and it being more story focused than gameplay focused which was a big disappointment to me with the way it was handled, which ultimately led to me giving up playing any newer zombies mode past Bo2.

When they censored everything I stopped following the new games and went back to wAw bo1 & bo2. Agartha was something the Nazis were desperately looking for, so it disgusted me when the devs got rid of the swastika bc “it’s offensive” but made “agartha” Heaven instead of some underground utopia like it is in folklore Really showing their true colors. I love COD zombies with all my heart, it's a very special mode to me and the idea behind this video came from the differences between what I thought was the simpler era (WAW, BO1, and some of BO2) and the more flourishing era where zombies became much more mainstream and started tinkering with the core foundations. Black Ops 2 and 3 is where that started to change for me, and I very much still love those eras and will gladly make a video on them too if this one does well.

And thar Call of Duty zombies piano really hits different
world at war zombies and black ops 1 have badass zombies, the atmosphere is scarier and realistic while the others are just goofy looking
God i wish i could go back to playing waw and bo1 maps for the first time. Staying up till midnight to start the downloads and hoping it would be done when you woke up. 💔 Well never get an experience like these amazing yet simple games.
I still remember the first time I played zombies. As a kid I was normally behind when it came to consoles and games, I still had a ps2 in 2009 and didn't even know the ps3 had come out yet. It wasn't until my older brother's friend stayed the night I got to get a glimpse at a call of duty game, what would be my first call of duty, world at war. I waited for months until Christmas and there were only two things on my list that year a ps3 and call of duty world at war. Once I had gotten them I stayed up every night for days playing through the campaign enthralled by just how cool it was and how much it truly felt like playing through a blockbuster WWII movie like saving private ryan or band of brothers. Once I had completed the campaign and planted that flag next to Reznov I already knew this would be a defining experience in my life. But once the credits rolled and that cutscene played I thought to myself, "there's more?!?! It's not over?!?" I saw the crashed plane and the multiple figures in the distance and tried to think of some way it related to the campaign, how this could be the true conclusion to the story, maybe it was a special epilogue level for those that sat through the credits or maybe a secret ending that I somehow unlocked without knowing. But no, I knew exactly what it was the second I saw it. "Nazi Zombies" plastered on the screen, oozing with blood like an open wound. The amount of dread ifelt as I was dropped into nacht with no objective or guidance will always be with me. Then I saw the zombies coming, got scared when they broke through the barriers and promptly closed the game.
Black Ops 1 was peak gaming for me! Still play zombies to this day and never got bored its awesome, best CoD ever imo
this got me reminiscing bro😔💯we can never go back and experience this for the first time.. no matter how many games come out in the future or how many times we go back to play this.. we never gonna feel that feeling we felt when ww2-bo2 zombies maps were coming out.. the season pass.. everyone so excited to see what would happen in the new map.. sheesh bro. what a ride
oh my god.. that was the greatest vid that has to do with zombies that ive ever seen.. i can see that u put your soul into this vid and it really turned out great. thanks for the content dude
I’ve always been a huge Halo fan and I gotta say WAW and BO1 zombies were the greatest horde modes ever to come out of that late 00’s early 2010’s era. I wouldn’t even use GOW horde mode or Halo’s firefight in the same sentence as classic COD zombies. Truly one of the greatest gaming experiences ever.
grew up with this stuff...seeing waw given its due diligence (especially after mw3's...questionable zombies mode) puts a smile on my face. how i do so miss these days of waiting for the next map..and setting records. verruckt was my first map. my first sprinter..my first double digit round..man. all these firsts. loved this era..and will never forget the times ive spent on waw. thank you waw, you'll always be remembered by me. perfect video my friend, perfect video indeed.
I think another thing that makes zombies less scary are the graphical upgrades, zombies was scary because it looked partially real but not really. With todays games and the way they look it’s kinda hard to make it scary because they’re just so visually stunning and they try to show us this with colorful, smooth, and bright textures. Something which the old ones did not have.
Stumbled upon your channel and was surprised to see a wide variety of videos. Will definitely be binging through as this one has me hooked! Keep it up man
Great video, this is by far the greatest era of zombies and will always hold a special place in my heart. Wish they'd dial it back a bit and get back to the roots of Zombies

Kino der toten will forever hold a special place in my heart
WaW and BO1 will always be the best Era of Cod Zombies to me. Everything felt perfect to the point that anyone could drop into any of the maps and have a blast while the story was simple to explain to people, still till this day it has unknown mysteries in it which is exactly how you handle the horror genre. The fact that WaW, BO1 (Not Call of the Dead) and some of BO2 were able to tell a story with just a simple newspaper/comic on the loading screens without any need for a cutscene still amazes me, since everyone wanted cutscenes and now they've done it (BO2 onwards Mob and Origins), it doesn't feel special or unique anymore. Mob of the Dead has a great mysterious loading screen but you can only see that in COOP not solo as it's a cutscene now, Origins was the first to remove the iconic newspaper/comic loading screen for a generic poster. It's a shame how alot, ALOT of what made Cod Zombies special, slowly died once Origins and BO3 took over.

I remember as a 10 yo kid I always thought you could escape Kino der Toten through the ladder in the middle of the backstage as an secret easteregg, it was a hole different time and experience compared to the following games
I agree heavily with the simplicity point, going from WaW to Bo2 as a kid I never knew how anyone was meant to figure out how to build stuff without trial and error. Like many I learnt from my friends who learnt from the internet.
@anthonyefimoff7228

Yeah, the purpose of the maps (to build stuff and complete easter eggs) took over the design, so it felt like the areas weren't designed as well as before. Instead of a tight, engaging obstacle course, it was just paths to get you to the next area so you could complete some secret objective that you would never figure out without dedicated trial and error.
I’d love to feel the anxiety and helplessness of old zombies in the modern games, yet honestly I have no clue how to make that work
This is a very late comment but I gotta say, you make very high quality and entertaining videos sir! I wish you the best success on your journey!
I miss the simple era of CoD Zombies... Wish they would just put some time aside and give us 3-4 new maps just like these ones. Environmental storytelling, more grounded, with simple gameplay elements. Sure it won't be one-upping the map before, but sometimes "more of the same" is exactly what we want. Like adding another verse to your favorite song that always seems to end too quickly.
Admit we all purchased WAW quick revive on solo because seeing the bright blue logo on our screen made us feel safer

Quick question at 1:54 how did you get that sound of the echo when blasting your shotgun? Is that in game or video editing. Very cool!
I love old school cod zombie it’s simple but still fun
I remember being the only person who actually liked call of the dead and same for mob of the dead. Strange how they became cult classics despite being hated on release
This is underrated, but Sliding made zombies real easy too
The one thing about zombies that I really don't like is the story. I understand why it's so fragmented and retcon-y, but it's just weird to look back at now and think about how much better it could've been. The best stories in zombies are ironically on 'isolated' maps that don't have too much to do with the main cast like Shadows and Mob.
I sometimes return to the older games to play the campaign and some zombies if that game has it. I haven't played any cod game past Ghosts.

I like to think we inspired the Zombie mode in World at War with our Zombie servers in Call of Duty 2 multiplayer. Starting with a few player controlled zombies slowly killing off the survivors which turned zombie once killed, the goal is to survive even if you are alone. If everyone was turned zombie the zombies won. That is for me the beginning.

I lost interest during Black Ops 2. Black Ops 1 will forever be my favorite, with WaW being appreciated for its missed weapons.
Old Zombies tapped into horror themes MUCH more and the only comedy relief were the unhinged characters who had good reasons to be caricatures through lore. Aside from Origins and MotD (in fact, I think Mob is the best map) every map after BO1 has suffered from being far too goofy, colorful, objective-heavy, and full of overly complex lore changes. Zombies should've NEVER went Cthonic/Lovecraftian. Existential/occult horror is great but they did an absolutely trash job at implementing it later on. The best part was how supernatural the mode was early on and was amplified by Mob taking place in purgatory. Even still, they could've drip fed us with obscure lore but they went and made a cinematic multiverse. Knowing about the end of Zombies and how the timelines converged/diverged actually killed a lot of my opinions of the old map stories. It's like they couldn't think of anything cool besides "shadowy guy whose basically Satan/God has been pulling the strings this whole time!" When I was just fine learning about the Illuminati's involvement of the Moon project and creepy shit like that back in the day.

The problem with games these days can be summed up in one word; money. Game developers used to care about the games they made. Now they know they can pump out trash and make just as much money so there is no reason to spend more time on it then they have too. I think the future of actually GOOD games lies in smaller passionate studios.

Hell no
I like the Cthulhu stuff in Zombies, so many Nazi bases until it gets old.
For me the downfall started with mob of the dead.
I can say with no doubt that BO1 is the best zombies game on an objective and subjective level. I never quite got to enjoy waw zombies (due to censorship) but i def. will someday since i still love it! However BO1 innovated so much and had such a vast map variety, good guns with good sounds and feeling to them. Easter eggs werent easy but not something you'd need to do ridiculous amounts of research for. BO2 was also pretty good in my opinion and came in with one of the best zombie maps ever (MOTD). BO3 zombies was better than i thought it was going to be at first but it feels off to me, crackhead zombies running at double the speed are not anxiety inducing but just annoying, the zombie speed and damage from earlier games was def. better, alongside the things that the video mentioned and a few others it simply can not hold up with previous titles in my book. What came after BO3 is not even worth mentioning if you ask me.
I have always said this, but I think Origins is what destroyed the original simplicity of zombies. It started immediately with the same cast we're familiar with, but from a different universe. I believe it all went downhill from here. I did not like Origins at all. It didn't feel like a classic zombies map. I felt pressured to do the complicated easter egg, and when I tried, there were just too many steps to follow. I understand Origins by itself is a great map, and I do like it, but it's just not a classic for me and it really upsets the balance in my opinion. From there it was a constant mess of multiple dimensions, rewriting history, trying to make stuff cannon that was previously just done for fun (original 4 in the waw maps in bo1 instead of generic soldiers)
