Video Example of a Channel setting (GoldSmith)

An example of a recent channel setting I did. Not by any means the only way to go about setting channel diamonds, but I hope that it helps anyone who might need a bit of guidance, Enjoy - Jaco

you are my favorite person now. Love the quality of the video and your instructions are amazing. Are you using GRS Microblock? Do you like it. I just purchased one and I am worried that it is too light and will move around alot. Any feedback is appreciated.

Gulsah Boye - thanks for the kind words buddy. Yep, that's the GRS micro. I find it works perfectly for this scale of work. Nothing to worry about. Use your other hand to counter the setting hand. Just make sure to keep it low not to stab yourself! I also stuck a piece soft rubber under the base to the table. I found an old mouse pad, removed the top and realised that the glue used to stick the top to the bottom of the pad still works great. So the rubber is basically an upside down mouse pad. But you could use anything. Good luck.

I saw something like that you described on your bench as were wondering what it was. Now I get it. Clever and practical. I found a swing arm that can be tightened, like a GRS benchmate for ring setting but it is made for GRS microblock and sold on Stuller. A bit expensive but keeps the grs microblock moving around and stabilizes. Check it out may be you;d like it. Thank you for the tips and I am going to try and let you know how i like it. Please post more videos.

How would you remove the diamonds in this type style? I have a ring that has this style stone setting. I want to remove the fake diamonds and do opal inlay. Any tips would help. It’s a cheap tungsten ring for me to practice with.

Love your video jaco! I have been practicing stone setting rings and pendants (mostly flush and bezel setting, with some engraving), I’m thinking of getting a ring setting clamp, may I ask which one u r using or u would recommend?

is there an 'entry' groove, that is bent closed once all the stones are in?

Hi Theodore, its difficult to show exacly how i set the stones as I don't have the correct camera to show all the detail. I cut the groove just deep enough for the stones to not fit while lying with the one side seated and the other out. Then I force the stone in. If you hear a click, then you have done it right. Hope that helps, Jaco

@@jacothejeweller I understand how you created the channel and how you determined the width of the channel, but the two things the video didn't show was the entry point and the seat. I think I understand what you told Theodore regarding the "snap" if you've done it right, but once you get the stone into the channel, what holds it into place? Do you take a graver and push metal inside the channel to keep the stone in place? Or is it more of angling your heart bur and creating the slot for the stone within the channel?
