I'm an advanced amateur making jewelry from recycled copper. I enjoy your relaxed, no-nonsense, clear, and to the point explanations. The majority of your techniques translate to copper work easily. Thank you for making me a better craftsman.

No problem and yeah you can do the same a things with copper, brass, silver and gold. There are small difference but it's basically the same. 😁👍
I am just starting with brass smithing and silver smithing. I was looking for exactly shat xou showed in the video. Thanks! I like the way you explain important things without unnecessary stories!
ideas: instead of a tumbler and media required try using a clean brillo pad to brighten up the piece or a brass brush (soft) . Both work and you need to control the look by the direction of your rub . BTW the clamp for filing flush is an expensive piece that is something for a pro , 3-4oo bucks for a Swiss made beauty . You can use egg shell powder with water and rub surfaces for a satin polish . These ideas are because the polish on silver is very easily marked , these are more forgiving and faster . Otherwise polishing with the usual Tripoli and rouge is good always . (retired goldsmith) :)
AWESOME! I made the mistake of buying a few semiprecious gemstones without much attention to their size and knew a flush setting could not be possible in every instance. Being limited in resources is tough sledding for a novice as it is buyer beware for every item that I may need, however, your videos offer a viable solution and I am encouraged. Thank you so much.=- `
Your videos are wonderfully clear.Thank you. The lists you provide for the materials you use in each project is extremely helpful. It makes watching your video, looking at suuplies to buy and making the project one efficient step which I very much appreciate.

It’d be a good idea to say how low the stone should go. Where does the table go? Above or below the edge of setting? How thick should the wall be, etc
Very informative video. l will have to try out, firstly obtain the required tools and see what transpires. You make things appear so simple.
I really liked your video about tube setting stones. I definitely want to start using tube settings with my other stone setting techniques. My question, is there a limit to the size stone that tube setting works best, or would it be limited to the size tubing that is made?

I need to make a ring with 2 tube set stones (3mm and 5mm) but they need to touch. I want the tube section to be between the shank rather than on top. Any suggestions on how to do this so I can get to both tubes to set the stones?
Please clarify something for me. Should the setting burr match the stone? i.e. if I have a 2.5 mm stone should I use a 2.5 mm setting burr too or some other size? Should the setting punch match the size of the tube? i.e. I have a 3 mm tube should I use a 3 mm setting punch? Thank you! Great video by they way.

It might be possible to do but it's not going to be easy to do and it would depend on how the stones are set. I don't suggest trying it seeing that you might just ruin your watch. 😅

Hey Gomeow, I have a question.. I'm designing a ring for my partner and am going to get it cast in seterling silver, I want to set a pear shaped blue saphire in it keeping it in place using prongs. My question is, do i need to heat treat the cast ring before & after setting the stone and bending the prongs into place to avoid any disasters?

If you are just using 925 Silver you should be fine as it is. Silver is kind of soft and bending prongs shouldn't be hard to do.

Hi Randy, this was a really great demo, thanks! Being on the cheap (because I've gone waaaaaay over budget - LOL), is it possible to set the stones if you don't have a setting bur and/or punch? Can you get by without at least one of them? Or is there a cheaper tool than the ones in the link? I've never done this but I'd love to tube set 6 tiny birthstones as a mother's day gift for my mom. It'll probably take me until mother's day to finish! 😄 Thanks so much for your help!🙂

Extremely impatient person’s hack for hardening the thermoplastic: if you’ve heated just a thin layer, spray it with air duster. That comes out super cold and will accelerate the hardening process. Or plop an ice pack on top for a minute.

Than you and I don't have a video on it yet but I will think about doing that 😊.
LOVELY video! The tube should be .5mm larger than your stone in a perfect world. so if your using a 2mm stone, you'd want a 2.5mm tube. Also a tip for soldering tubes like that to your flat half circles, put T pins through your honeycomb block, backwards (points up) and then put the tubes onto the t pins and then put the half circles up against the tubes and flux/solder like normal! they won't fall over on you, as the upside down T pins hold them in place. (T Pins are found in the sewing section at Michels/Hobby Lobby/amazon) I was told tumblers don't actually work harden pieces regardless of the media used...but then i've also heard they do....shrug?
@GomeowCreations

Randy, there is a LOT of controversy about tumblers "work hardening" pieces (metal). I've heard that unless the piece is VERY thin and tumbled for a LONG TIME - (hours!), A tumblers action cannot impart enough percussion to affect a hardening result, at least a result that is enough; what's needed to impart strength. It's clear that tumbling does a great job of burnishing and a bit of cleaning too. What do you know/think of this?
@juliel6254
3 жыл бұрын
Flying Chef - I can't speak for anyone else, but I have the same tumbler as Randy and I LOVE it. It does work harden my pieces. It is excellent for smaller pieces like ear wires and freshly soldered pieces as they are always easily malleable. After a good hour or two in the tumbler, they are much harder and stiffer for sure. I have two lbs of steel shot in mine and it works great. And the polishing aspect makes it well worth it.
@satay31
3 жыл бұрын
Julie L, agreed, I usually tumble much longer 4-8 hours but I only have 1lb of shot in my tumbler and tumbling does a great job on my handmade findings, bezel set pieces, Even rings and chain.
