Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia was born Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh on the 25th of November 1876 in Malta. She was the third child of Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She was a granddaughter of both Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Emperor Alexander II of Russia. She fell in love with her Russian first cousin, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia, but due to his faith, they were forbidden from marrying. Victoria went on to marry another first cousin, Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, but they were not well suited to each other, and divorced in 1901. Victoria eventually did marry Kirill, without permission from the British king or the Russian tsar. They were banished from Russia, and after the fall of the Russian monarchy in 1917, they fled to Finland. Their only son was born in 1917, and from him, they are grandparents of Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia, the current disputed head of the House of Romanov.

The Russian Orthodox Church did not allow marriages between first cousins that is true. Another sticking point was the fact that Victoria Melita had divorced the brother of the reigning Czarina......this made the marriage very unpopular with Nicholas & Alexandra.

Her granddaughter Kira married Andreas of Yugoslavia who was Melita's nephew. Andreas was also married to Christine of Hesse, Prince Philip's niece. Christine's cousin Margarita of Baden married Andreas' brother Tomislav. Phew!
