Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia

Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia was the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. When she was twenty years old, Maria married Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, the first marriage between a Russian Royal and a British Royal to occur. It was initially a happy marriage, but eventually, like most royal marriages, it became an increasingly unhappy one. In 1893, Maria became the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha when her husband inherited the duchy. She greatly enjoyed her life in Germany, serving as the Duchess. Tragedy struck her family with the death of her only son Alfred and her husband, in 1899 and 1900 respectively. The duchy passed to her nephew-in-law, Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany. Maria lost more family tragically in 1918, when several members of her Russian family were murdered by the Bolsheviks. She died only two years later, in exile in Switzerland.

@@husseinmuhammed828 It actually was not. The host of the channel is correct in asserting its status as a Duchy. There was a Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, ruled by another branch of the same Wettin dynasty, but the other principalities where the family reigned were Duchies (with the exception of the Kingdom of Saxony, and those countries [Belgium, Britain, Portugal, and Bulgaria] where scions of the House of Wettin came to their respective thrones through various circumstances).

Grand Duchess Marie was a very fortunate woman. She was loved by her family and when she married her father, Alexander ll showered her with magnificent jewelry and her dowry was a staggering sum of $100, 000 pounds. Her marriage was unhappy as Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh married her for her huge fortune and died an alcoholic. Her daughter, the beautiful Marie Queen of Roumania, said in her autobiography that her mother was unhappy and hard to please. She hated England. She died in Switzerland and left her 4 daughters magnificent jewelry.

It should be noted that although the very homely looking Marie Alexandrovna was initially smitten with Prince Alfred (he was considered extremely handsome), Prince Alfred in return was mainly attracted to her enormous fortune. They did not have a happy marriage.

I just started binge watching all of your videos. They are great. I only have one critique. It's kind of an important one because it kind of makes me not want to watch it anymore.. the background music in your video is as loud as you're speaking. It becomes insanely distracting to the point that I turn off the video for a while. If the music is just a little softer so that you're beautiful voice is what we hear more of that would be the greatest of improvements. Great work and thank you

As the only daughter of Alexander ll she was spoilt and arrogant. Such traits would not have made her many friends in England, or elsewhere. Having said that she is one of the more interesting royal women of the late 19th century and she deserves a biography.

I think it's because the Russian royal family is led by a tsar/emperor and not a king. The tsar's children are titled Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses. The children of kings are princes and princesses.

Grand Princess and Grand Duchess are same in rank 💙 They're interchangeable, like how Lichtenstein is called either Grand Duchy or Grand Principality, and their current monarch is called either Grand Duke or Grand Prince.

I did a little research, and what I could find was: After Ivan IV of Russia was crowned as the first Tsar of All Russia in 1547, the titles of the sons and daughters of the Tsar of Russia was changed to Grand Duke and Grand Duchess respectively. It was also passed on to grandchildren through the male line. The title only passes down to as far the male line grandchildren. The Tsar's great-grandchildren can only hold the rank of prince or princess. Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses outrank princes and princesses. It's their form of titles. Technically, Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses rank higher than Princes and Princesses. Like in modern terms, Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg ranks higher than lets say Prince William, Prince of Wales, as a Grand Duke is ruler, whereas a Prince is generally not. But it depends on the country, and titles. The Russian emperor or Tsar wanted to bestow his children with titles that were befitting of rank, and chose Grand Duke/Grand Duchesses. I may not be completely correct, but that's all I could find. If you can find anymore information, I would be very happy to hear more
