The Children of Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

The second son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha became the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893, following the passing of his uncle, Ernest II. In 1874, he married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, making him the first British prince to marry a member of the Russian Imperial Family. They had six children together: Prince Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Marie, Queen of Romania, Grand Duchess Victoria Feodorovna of Russia, Princess Alexandra, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, a stillborn son, and Princess Beatrice, Duchess of Galliera. In 1899, their only surviving son died, and the following year, Alfred died. The title of Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha passed onto to Alfred's nephew, Charles Edward, Duke of Albany.
