VICE Meets: BMX Rider Mat Hoffman

Ойын-сауық

VICE correspondent Johnny Knoxville takes us to meet modern-day Evel Knievel, Mat Hoffman. More than any other figure in BMX riding, Hoffman's responsible for the the popularity of big air tricks, hence the title of Spike Jonze's documentary about Mat, The Birth of Big Air. Despite breaking over 20 bones and getting his arm shattered to bits by a semi-truck, Mat continues to bike harder and invent wilder tricks than anyone else in the business-all to the deep concern/chagrin of his doctors, who considered his career finished after the accident.

They say dont meet your legends, but I would give my right arm to give that man a hug. the joy not only him but every single soul in action sports from the late 90s to late 2000s has given me is immeasurable and deserves infinite praise

I feel like not many people know about the semi-truck thing. To go through that alone would have been incredible, but add in all the other injuries and the fact that this dude STILL drop-kicks boundaries in the face, and you get a truly super-human story. Hail the Condor, may the Miracle Boy fly in peace and Love to all BMX!

PS Matt did die twice from this jump, he hooked a weedwacker to his bmx to get more speed and crashed on landing and ruptured his spleen and his blood pressure dropped and his heart stopped twice. He also has gotten his knee drilled through and through with no anesthesia or nothing and had his ligaments replaced all on nothing. That’s the definition of gnarly
