VFX Reel - The Hobbit (M4's Book Edit)

Фильм және анимация

These digital effects shots are my contribution to M4's fan-edit of The Hobbit.

Two of the shots - gold on Smaug and Radagast on eagle - are my improved versions of Dustin Lee's work (the Maple Films fan-edit).
Here's a download link to all these shots, if you want to use any of them in your own fan-edit.

If you do use them, I would very much appreciate if you credit me for the work.

    Forgot to comment here a while ago but I may as well! As mentioned by Eric, these are for my fan edit of the hobbit, although some of you new viewers might wonder why these VFX were done: First few with Thorin are because he no longer duels Azog, and so no reason for him to be wounded. Arrows were removed because there is no river battle. Dwalin was removed because he never went to Ravenhill & instead Bilbo goes for its location as vantage point, like the book. The rest are pretty self explanatory

    thank you!! - just watched the full M4 cut - best fanedit of the hobbit movies out there in my opinion. And frankly, the hobbit is probably the most important movie ever made to fanedit and deserves the kind of attention you and M4 put in. Despite the theatrical's flaws, martin freeman's performance (inspired casting by PJ) means it will always be a great movie.

    I just finished watching this and it was fantastic. Easily the best fan edit of the "trilogy" so far! My only issues were a few abrupt cuts here and there and the intermission being a bit too long, but otherwise this is pretty much up to par with the LotR trilogy movies. I managed to get my hands on this edit, and it is my preferred viewing for The Hobbit now. I didn't necessarily hate all the changes the movies made, I think Tauriel was cool for instance.. but she isn't in the book, and that just bugs me. I don't mind a bit of deviation, after all, the original Trilogy deviated pretty heavily in some areas, mostly due to time. Heck, some changes arguably improved the writing, for instance Aragorn taking up Anduril acting as a metaphor for his acceptance of his destiny, but when you get to the point where you are basically writing a whole extra book's worth of plot and characters, it isn't Tolkien anymore.

    Hi Eric! First off I just want to say this is phenomenal work! Must have took hours to get everything pieced together scene by scene. I also have been working on a Hobbit edit for about 6 or 7 years now and am hoping to get it completed this year. I’d be very interested in working with you or discussing some potential effects work for the project if you’d be interested.

    Hi! To be honest, I don't see myself joining in on another Hobbit project at this point. This is the one for me, and when it's done I'm done. But like I said in the video description, anyone is free to use these digital alterations in their edits as long as they give credit for the many hours I've put into these shots.

    @@eric-nd9so In that case, maybe you could give me some advice as to whether you think an effect is doable. I don't know how well you know the film as a whole, but at the end of the film Beorn the bear is dropped into the battle and we see him fighting a bunch of orcs. In this, his fur is brown and I am looking to alter it to black to match his book description. There's a lot of movement in the shot. So far I've been going about it by changing the colour of his fur in a single frame and then running it through a software called EbSynth in order for it to alter each individual frame to the new colour, but results have proved pretty terrible. I was just wondering if you think this shot would be doable at all (not asking you to do it) or if you think it's impossible based on the footage

  • @eric-nd9so

    @eric-nd9so

    @@MovieMentality Interestingly, this was actually talked about on M4's discord today. Ultimately, the consensus was that it's not worth the time and effort. I think it's definitely doable though, so if it feels like a detail that is important enough for your edit, I say go for it. Just prepare to spend a lot of time on it. And I really mean a lot. With shots like those, with a lot of stuff going on like the Orcs climbing on him and other foreground elements overlapping etc, I don't think there's really any other way of doing it than to manually edit it frame by frame if you want a usable result. Which, obviously, is no small task. So to summarise - Is it doable? I definitely think so. Is it worth your time and effort? Only you can be the judge of that.

    The Hobbit is three above average films that have lots of small problems with the bigger ones being pacing, tone and CGI. This edit goes for more of a book story and for fixing those issues mentioned above. By doing that, the slightly above average films become one incredible epic that rivals LOTR, I'd give it a 9/10. The whole film is an amazing scene after an amazing scene and so on.

    I'm here! I can explain: Other than being like the book, Bard's family plot was pretty much entirely removed because it kinda sucked IMO / distracted from the main story (No more Bard being spied on, his kids helping with healing Kili/hanging with tauriel, his son hiding the black arrow, them all getting saved in BOTFA), so really removing him from the smaug attack was just another step in removing the bard-family plot, it would feel random to have his kid be super important in this scene but not anywhere else. My edit never explained the black arrow being hidden and the need for it to be delivered to bard, so it wouldn't work anyways. As for Bard's character, we focus more on him individually than his whole family. We hear some info about him, a little backstory, his ancestry, his motivations (part of which is wanting to keep his family safe, even if we dont know the kids personally), and so his character is still plenty fleshed out with an arc from everyman to leader, with clear motivations & character traits as you watch my project, without the need of putting his kids center stage so often. They are more background characters reminding us why he is a good man, relatable, and has good intentions. Additionally, I just thought it was a silly visual that was a little "corny" to have him balance the arrow on his kid.

    I finished the M4 edit and really enjoyed it! I will use it in future whenever I feel like rewatching the Hobbit from now on. My only major issue was the intermission between part 1 and 2. I feel like by cutting the eagles, we could have transitioned somewhat smoothly from the dwarves running from wargs into bilbo encountering transformed Beorn. I guess that causes in issue of "Where are the eagles coming from?" in part 3, but still. The intermission is weird and shouldn't be there.

    For Thorin's wounds, I made a deepfake with DeepFaceLab. The result of the deepfake itself wasn't great, but good enough to mask it on top of the wounds with opacity turned down. As for Smaug, I used the already de-golded shot from the Maple Film's Edit and improved it by photoshopping it frame by frame using various methods, like the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp and masked adjustment layers. Again, not perfect results, but good enough for such a quick shot.

    because in this edit the movie follows the book. bard is not imprisoned, his son is not a major character, and bard kills smaug on his own, meaning the son does not need to deliver the arrow, meaning it would make no sense for his son to randomly appear on the tower. plus, even more importantly it looked ridiculous to balance an arrow on your own kid's shoulder. this video is for an EDIT, because it edits how the original movie flows, that is why you would make such a change
