    Hi guys, I’m an ex crew member from the trilogy (not the hobbits). We shot ALOT of stuff that never made the Final Cut, including some ultra violent battle stuff reminiscent of PJs early splatter stuff. One day we may see an edition with a higher age rating. Happy to answer any questions anybody has, cheers from NZ

    @@mythwest we did a shot for the helms deep rampart sequence which was pretty cool and never made it- We had a prosthetic Uruk head full of brains and blood etc, the shot was at 48fps off speed , a CU of the head with an elf warrior behind him over his shoulder, the elf ran up and sliced the Uruk head and cleaved the top of the head off and black blood spurted everywhere. Very PJ, but never made the cut. It was second unit and PJ wasn’t there that day so idk how he felt about it, but the crew gathered around the monitor afterwards while the stunties were reviewing and whooped and hollered haha we must’ve watched it about ten times over until the first AD realised he had to move things along again 👍

    Honestly a movie series IMO was never good enough for something like LOTR there should have been no question that all stories told in Arda should be through a tv series. A movie series is just going to leave us wanting more more more at least when its starts as a tv series if the numbers are good enough we easily get that more more more. Now they will forever tiptoe around the idea of reshooting the LOTR to tell more of the story in a tv series. Which IMO should be done without question, yes it will be sad that we cant see those same actors but at the end of the day we want the story a good actor bringing a character to life really well is just a bonus that all actors/directors should aim for.

  • @njux1871

    @njux1871

    there are plenty of 6+ hour movies. theatre's just can't afford showing these. they could show 2 and a half other films in that time instead of having a hall blocked with like 10-50 guests for 6 whole hours. Sure if we look at Love Exposure for example, it's a masterpiece, but the mainstream will duly ignore it in the west. so it had to be a massive IP. Like I guess Lord of the Rings. And even with LOTR I doubt that it would be a big success in the cinema unless it's actually a good cut. The Extended Edition already is bloated and has pacing issues. it had to work. but honestly at that point I'd just release it as a re-cut TV show on Netflix or something. Which would be a bummer though because LotR breaths the spirit of film and that feels lowkey like forcing Tolkien to split up his novel into three once more lol

    I have a fun personal connection to the LOTR trilogy that relates to unused footage. My dad worked on one of the behind the scenes featurettes for the Extended DVD release of The Two Towers. If I recall, he did the one about the VFX for Gollum. You'll see his name as "David Spell" if you check the credits. He told me a funny story about his time working on it. During production of the DVD bonus features, Weta had apparently LOST some of the hard-drives with the behind-the-scenes footage they were going to provide to the editors. Of course, these lost drives had exactly what my dad needed to cut the piece. He had to creatively edit by making use of what little he had. For example, he would have to use shots for B-roll that were unrelated to what the speaker was talking about. Anyways, my dad has a friend who worked on the Return of the King behind-the-scenes sometime afterward my dad wrapped on the Two Towers featurette. While working on ROTK, his friend told him that Weta had FOUND the lost hard drives of footage that my dad could have used on his piece. My dad only worked on the features for Two Towers, so he never was able to use that footage. Oh well, lol. I know this video relates to unseen footage that could've appeared in the final film, but there's probably a good amount of footage out there was planned for the DVD bonus features but was never used (unless maybe they repurposed some for the ROTK features, I dunno). I know this is a "trust me bro" kind of story, but I thought it was a fun story to share related to this topic. I was really young when my dad worked on this, so LOTR has a very special place in my life because of my dad's contribution to the trilogy. Seeing this video reminded me of it.

Also, you might run the risk of being disillusioned if you see the extra footage's quality of acting and writing and realizing that the scenes we got were the absolute creme de la creme of the entire bunch. Film also degrades over time so Warner better hurry digitizing their vaults :-).

Why can't people understand what works as written word won't always work in a movie. The Scouring of the Shire is a great example, it would have destroyed the movie version of RotK. The important thing is Jackson stayed as true to the story as possible in a big budget movie from a major studio - and that is a miracle in and of itself. Look what Warner Bros. did to the Hobbit.

    I wanted to see that too, and it's in keeping with the book, but the reason Peter Jackson gave for cutting that makes sense: it would have detracted from the "death" of Gandalf and the heavy emotions of that moment for the Fellowship to suddenly have to run from goblins again. To me I wouldn't care if it went for 10 hours+..before they even get out of hobbiton lol... but seriously, this would sell very well as millions of movie LOTR fans would really gobble this up. I'd LOVE to see new angles on the same scenes...re-takes, new footage...it wouldn't have to be seriously integrated into the movie per-say, but would enhance the actual movie when watched again, and would allow a video editing frenzy to kick in as the fans would love messing around with this stuff. I always felt that as awesome as the trilogy is, I also feel a lot was left outside both the Theatrical and Extended versions (understandibly considering cinema and stuff). Streaming this as a mini-series, as Mythwest mentioned, would be an excellent idea (also agree with bringing Howard Shore to compose a few tracks, like an intro), and maybe a few small things to be added, like the scenes mentioned, extended battles, perhaps expanding Saruman/Gandalf's true forms (I would assume this means bringing Ian McKellen for perhaps a narration about the matter). I always thought of the films, as was famously said about the book itself, was not that they were too long but that they were far too short. The book the lord of the rings was of course divided by the author in to 6 unnamed books not the three packaged together by the publisher. It would be natural to make a three hour or so long movie for each of these 6 books. Something like: Film 1: A shadow of the past Film 2: The ring goes south Film 3: The treason of Isengard Film 4: The ring goes east Film 5: The war of the ring Film 6: The end of the age

    Yeah the movies are too short as proper adaptations of the book. They are as good as they could have been as 3 hour movies but they just leave out so much character development. A lot of characters like gimli and legolas get almost no character development. Even Aragorn doesn’t get very much. Not any fault of the movies, there’s just only so much you can do cramming a big book into a 3-4 hour movie.

  • @AnnaMarianne

    @AnnaMarianne

    8 ай бұрын

    @@EresirThe1st His characterization was subtle and not in your face, but it wasn't at all poor. I love his deep nuanced take on the Frodo/Sam/Gollum triangle, and the exploration of the concept of the good/the better/the best. Sam is *right* to judge Gollum - Gollum deserves to be judged - but Frodo's merciful wish to save him is even *better.* Sam judges Gollum chiefly out of loyalty to Frodo, but him judging Gollum causes Frodo to fail to save Gollum, which in the end greatly contributes to Frodo himself falling to his hurt and despair and having to leave Middle-earth. So Sam's ferocious loyalty and protectiveness over Frodo ends up hurting Frodo and causing Sam to lose Frodo, as he leaves for good. Etc. Lots of great stuff going on. I especially love Tolkien's villainous and semi-villainous characters. He really understood the tragedy of evil, of fall and of failing to be restored to good. His heroic characters are really good, too. Aragorn for example is a great if not the greatest example of the classical Western idea of the ideal masculine man - a man who is not limited by his weakness from doing what he wants to do, nor is so out of his own control that he uses what abilities he has to just pursue his own selfish desires. He's not defined by what he doesn't have (power and the self-control of that power), but what he is and what he has (those exact things). Aragorn is ambitious, and capable of violence and of dominating others, but he simply chooses not to pursue his selfish goals, and instead uses his strength and ability help those who have neither. So he's also an example of the Servant Leader, a vital Western concept. And he's an exploration of privilege and power in as something positive and good. Yes, he is insanely privileged in a way no other human is, but his privilege is good and justified, because what he has is not *away* from others, it's a *benefit* for others too. He has power and he wants even more power and he ends up gaining more power than anyone else at that point - and it's a good thing. Power is not wrong. Aragorn is like the antithesis of the messed up view of masculinity, leadership and privilege of our time. Of course, all of this is neck deep in Christian/Catholic theology. Sam and Frodo's respective attitudes towards Gollum are reflections of the Justice vs Mercy conflict. Justice and Mercy are both right, but Mercy is a far more excellent path. And Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf are the three faces of the Messiah: Gandalf is Messiah the God Incarnate, Aragorn is Messiah the human King, and Frodo is Messiah the Redeemer.

    I don't think anything can fix the problem that created the "Rings of Power." It's not that the story content was what made the show suck. It's the fact that the people who own the IP and the licensing are greasy, money-grubbing pigs who only understand spreadsheets and statistical data. They refused to hire actual writers for the show. Look at the writing credits. None of them are career writers. They're all low-tier "producers" who wrote a handful of crappy episodes for highschool dramas and Law & Order and used their connections as "producers" to get the job. It's all nepotism born from hollywood's rotting corpse. Just goes to show that Amazon thinks of LOTR and the Silmarillion as an easy cash cow and they have no reverence for it. They're going to milk it until its udders fall off. Considering all this, there is no hope even for a mini series based on that old footage. Who is going to handle that footage? What editor? What director? Will they need to shoot additional footage? The process is going to be picked apart by vultures, I guarantee it. If we ever expect something good to come out of Tolkien's works again, it'll be after the IP falls into the hands of a group that actually gives a crap about the source material. But that's a rich man's game. And I mean _billionaire_ rich.

    What do you mean sold out? They are still easily purchased in most formats.

    @@jameswebber359Sorry about that, what I meant to say is that I used to have the Special Extended DVD's (my dad owned a video rental shop, which when he closed got most of the content inside it) of FoTR, TT and RoTK. While I read, I remembered I had those DVDs and asked if they were still here, and got answered that 2 of them were sold, and RoTK being the only one left.

    The mini series format is how I was thinking the only manner which The Silmarillion could be presented. But, The Silmarillion is just too good. SOME of that epic universe benefits from exclusively read/print/internal imagination. IMHO.

    A mini series of the cut scenes would be freakin amazing even the LOTR trilogy bloopers is far more quality content than anything in the rings of power lmao

    I'd be up for a series around the Last Alliance. With actual Gil-Galad, not what ever the hell Rangs of Powa was.

    I yearn for any small tidbit of footage that I can see!! I'm always scouring the interwebs for some scene or minute detail I may have missed. Bring it on in any shape, form or context. I could never get enough. Ever. !! It all makes me so very happy In a very dark world at times. And thank every single soul that made these movies happen. ❤ seriously Bless you all!! Love from a TN girl 💓

    Personally feel the best way the best way to release this footage is as a big, beefed up deleted scene disc with the mythical 25th anniversary edition. Hoping Peter Jackson gets to make one! We’ve already got two versions of the film in existence, I’m not sure of the need for an extended ultimate edition as well, particularly when we consider the point mentioned in the video that it may give us more footage at the expense of the quality of the film. Plus no matter what is added, certain scenes (the big one being Arwen at Helm’s Deep) have been dropped from the plot, so they could not be included. Even if I think Jackson made the right creative decision there, I’m still interested in seeing it, so would need another outlet for all the bits that would never be added.

    So what you're telling me is there is a vast treasure horde underground and a giant corporate monster. Guarding it and you're looking for about 13 adventurers to go retrieve it? Hmmm.... Count me in!

    This would be fucking awesome. I’d love to see the films more accurately aligned to the pace of the books. I love the films, but one thing that has always felt strange watching them is the pacing. After reading the books, I feel like the films pacing is just so fast… even at an already long film. I’d be so down for a mini series or even a long ass film.

    The proof of these extra scenes exisiting were also evident by the tie-in games, which used many actual shots that people never saw. I remmeber when I played Return of the King, I was very confused by frames and shots that i never saw, but later on saw in Extended Editions or something that neither eidtions saw, like early design of the Witch-King's helmet, which was VERY different in the game compared to the movie design. Which only means that game developers had access to stuff that no fan ever saw on screen.
