I think what he primarily likes about the whole story is, that it shows that everyone can do something like this as long as they are dedicated enough, because especially as teens what you lack in tools and money and experience you can compensate with having enough time. He once shared a story about a teen who made his own Iron Man helmet by starting with one of those paper cutout things that you glue into an actual 3D helmet made of paper and then cover the whole thing with layers and layers of plaster or bondo and painstakingly sanded it down and into shape to the point that it had a smooth surface that he could paint it. It was an insanely inefficient and time-consuming process, but it did cost him basically nothing and the result was really good.

You know what I find utterly awesome? When Adam shows his Alien helmet and mentions how his replica took so much time and money; and then, with the happiest smile, he presents the helmet from the high schoolers right alongside it, and agrees with the assesment that they look so similar on camera. Like he clearly has just as much pride in owning the high school prop as he does his own, and holds it in equal regard. That story about Ridley Scott going to see their production himself and bringing Sigourney Weaver just makes me so happy.

It is about the stories. I recently realized that the reason I liked having antiques and other artifacts passed down to me from my parents/uncles/aunts/grandparents/etc. or that I collected during my own adventures, isn't because of any value of the items themselves, but due to the stories attached to the items. Picking up the item transports me to the time and place it was created or collected, or connects me to the person who collected it. Sharing the story associated with the item connects me, the collector, and the listener.

Ahh, stuff like this, people like Adam Savage, and stories like these are what make me fall in love with humanity all over again. I’ve always loved the idea of CGI enhancing Practical, because man there’s so much you could do with just giving the set, the actors, and the audience that extra level of believability and love. Like when an actor can interact with their world in small ways, it feels all the more amazing. Memories of Murder illustrates this, while not full of monsters and weird sci-fi craft, the actors will grab and throw stuff sloppily, they’ll sit on objects, interact with each other and it’s one thing that makes everything feel just that more human than a lot of movies I see. One of the characters tips a table slightly, knocking over bottles and dishes a little. The way a character interacts with a cup shows how they feel either dominant, or unheard. If you wanna make a fake environment feel real, make lots of practical objects, and show the actors sloppily messing with them as if they’ve used it for years. Litter the frame with stuff, all showing the audience who your character is. If you want to make your fantasy feel real, make your character lay on an ancient monument to an elder god as they eat cooked and salted bugs and have an argument about their futures.
