"VLA" is not a satellite array. The acronym stands for "Very Large Aperture". Main function: spacecraft tracking and radio astronomy.

Mmmmmm, we traveled that way 2 yrs ago. Pie town, best there is. NM apple pie has some jalapenos in it &berry just like a fresh handful. Dital, gas-corner store-restaurant has wonderful burgers via grind their own fresh meat. VLR, outstanding. There is the nicest little BLM campground that was $2 with our Senior Card. We rode a road/forestery road/road again where we came across old Adobe houses. There was a church also that was small Adobe, enlarged with straw bricks, then over wood they stuccoed. We love having a basecamp to explore from for a few days. Socorro was where we were hauled to when our wheel severed off our 16ft tt. Memorable trip in many ways. Love your vids. We are 72y/o, stuck at our home in Alabama. So wanting to travel. Thanks for letting up armchair.

Route 60 is my favorite highway in NM.... from Socorro to Datil (pronounced ' DATTLE' , to Pie Town, Quemado, etc. And if you drive this stretch at night in the Winter, with all the craters and mountains, it is honestly like driving on the Moon....you seldom see another car and the stars are HUGE. A big win.

🙋‍♀️Hello Russ! This was a wonderful day! Some of the landscape does favor Arizona. Haze laying along those mountains in the back. Probably from all the fires. We had the haboob hovering over us a few days ago. It was hazy like your mountains all around me. I am in the mountains. We were under a code orange for air quality. We may have a 2nd wave of it this week-weekend. No parades here Saturday. Our 'lil town puts off some beautiful fireworks. I hope you get some rest Russ, you sounded tired in your voice. I really enjoyed your video. Would like to know more about Array. Interesting. 👍

Was stationed at Holloman AFB (Alamogordo) during much of the eighties. As far as camping goes, the Forest Service has this neat thing called "dispersed camping", where you could park up to 300 feet (it was 100 ft in the eighties) off of an established road and set up camp. Parked my pickup camper all over the Lincoln and Gila NF's. No charge and, of course, no services. I'd advise checking with a local ranger station prior to pulling off the road. Currently (2021), the Lincoln has no restrictions, the Gila has some restrictions, and none of the NF's here in California (where I live) allow camping outside of established campgrounds.

Pity you couldn't get in cos it's really cool, and you can walk up right to one of those huges dishes. Movies that are filmed there are 'Contact' with Jody Foster and 'The Year We Made Contact' with Roy Scheider.

Bummer the VLA Visitor's Center was closed. It does a lovely job of explaining the science they are doing and how they do it. At least you got to see one of the antenna up close. Yes, it is radio astronomy. And I just read their Visitors Center Guide. They probably would not have allowed you to film there. They are very protective of avoiding any stray radio signals that will damage the very faint radio signals they are trying to pick up. But the real science information is interesting.

After watching the entire video I noticed the fuel prices 😮 I knew they dropped in this area more than most! I think Texas gas and diesel dropped below $1.00 a gallon 😊 I was in Pennsylvania during the whole thing, PA and NY State didn't drop the prices much, the normal was around $3.90 for gas and $4.00 for diesel the lowest I saw it during Covid was in the High $2.90-$3.50 range it was still a great break but not like around here. My wife and I should have gone full time back then we could have traveled 10x more area for the same Fuel cost.
