In the 1950s, the White Sands National Park let you drive deep inside the sands where it was pure white high dunes and absolutely no vegetation. They had parking areas and washroom buildings like the one you photographed. They also had the shaded picnic tables.

I went there in the 60's and did that, us kids played king of the hill on the steep backsides where we could jump 40ft or more off the crests, it was all huge white dunes back there! We were from MN and my Grandparents lived in Alamogordo, it was Christmas time and we went up to Cloudcroft to play in the snow as well. Great memories!

We're so happy you enjoyed our area and the sites, but you did not go anywhere near the prettiest regions of White Sands... If you would have gone another mile into the Dunes loop, you would have been blown away! Untouched dunes (redone every night with breezes) and even more stunning views. It's simply a unique experience in our country!

So true, Sandy. Wife and I lived in Alamo for 10 years, and I volunteered at the park 10 years ago. So much fun to work with great rangers and to tell visitors about the amazing sequence of natural processes needed to make the sand. The park quickly became my favorite, even though I've been to Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Yellowstone, and several others. As for Russ, well, he makes great videos, but sometimes doesn't immerse himself enough in places. He'll say stuff like, "This is definitely on my bucket list. Have to come back and check it out", when he needs to stop NOW and check it out. Waiting for his bucket list time may make it even harder to walk on those dunes! That being said, I do enjoy Russ' commentary and camera work. He gets a kick out of life, and is living his dream. More power to him.

Boy the world of Whites sands, and the land of gypsum, is pretty remarkable. Our countries and our nature is pretty miraculous. It looks like the land of snow, and yet is gypsum, so white and so beautiful. We have a land like that here in Canada, and we also have a land that looks that but is potash, which is used for fertilizer, so it is pretty remarkable what our Mother Earth produces....Thank you Russ, and a big wave to you from Colin and I as we travel with you on your route for holidays. We know that area is filled with tornado weather, so our prayers for your safety go with you from us. Please take care as we love the travel and to do it with you but it is not worth your life, if you run into a tornado...So stay safe Russ, for we all have to get together for a hug yet, but thank you for the travel, for we so appreciate you keeping us sane right now with travel while my husband heals....Bless you all in friendship, and Love from Canada, your friends forever. Stay safe everyone. Carolyn

I was there in 1993 and did a tour of the Space Museum and the White Sands National Monument. It was a self-drive tour of the South West. While I was at the White Sands NM, the first thing I noticed was that the sand is not pure white. It's a kind of 'creamy' colour. However, in full sunlight, it does look white. And this shows up in Ross's video. It's actually almost 100 % Gypsum (Calcium Sulphate) I went all the way to the end loop of the road and did a walk-a-bout to an area where I was completely surrounded by pure sand. No vegetation. I had a small plastic container with me and even though you're not supposed to, I just couldn't resist the temptation. I filled up the container with the sand. I even found several small, very rough pale brownish Gypsum crystals and they are also with the sample as well. I still have the sample and it's a treasured souvenir of the trip. And you can see the 'creamy' colour of the sand.

We went to White Sands the first week of Feb. the gift shop was closed for entry, you had to point at things thru the glass to make any purchases. NM was still griped in fear of the Virus, most eateries were all pickup only and a lot of things where closed and the same in Roswell our next stop😁👽 Russ you showed a photo of the picnic table but didn’t include on the video the drive through the actual picnic area and the toilets. Those were super clean and a ranger was passing thru the area Checking to make sure they all had TP. The Rangers did a fantastic job in the park area. That long walkway is basically a wheelchair assess-ability ramp for people with disabilities. You can also rent coasters there by the gift shop. We saw kids and adults using them. By the way all the picnic spots had grills for charcoal use only and a nearby trash barrel. Our dogs on long leashes had a great time there too. I love how the sand doesn’t stick to you😁👍 Anyone going, go early and plan on staying awhile. The day we went the weather was perfect, not too cold at all. It was a fun visit!
