Vertigo
Фильм және анимация
Part of the fear of heights is that mad desire to jump from them.
Alenka Artnik is a Slovenian world record holding freediver, and the deepest female with a monofin: she has dived on breath-hold to 122 meters. Only a few days after that historic dive, we filmed this exploration of the strange desire to jump whenever we find ourselves at a great height. Turns out we'd both had dreams where we did just that, and we both experienced that in water, you can give into it.
This was filmed at Deans' Blue Hole in the Bahamas, which is 200 meters deep, enough to give anyone vertigo. Florian Burghardt kept us safe and helped with all kinds of things behind the scenes. The music is 'Revelations' by Tristan Barton.
Find out more about Alenka's incredible story from the rise of the depths here: onjustonebreath.com/

i was many many years old when today i learned that vertigo isn't actually the fear of heights, but that feeling of not knowing what's up or down. Fear of heights is called 'acrophobia' - wish i'd known that before i made the thumbnail...

I only know vertigo as a state of feeling very dizzy. I've experienced it once during a ascent from a scuba dive. I knew from reference of my team and through training that my body position was horizontal and stable but my body was telling me I was going through a rollercoaster very quickly. I recognised what was happening (this can happen when there's a pressure difference in the inner ear) and it was sort of mind over matter at that point. After a while it subsided and I was able to continue the ascent. I'm not very fond of heights either and drop-offs during scuba diving give me a funny feeling too. I can see how people with a stronger response than me with being high up (or even better having nothing underneath them) will make them feel disorienting or dizzy or maybe even extreme dizzy like the physically caused vertigo.

@@R_T_HEIDE that sounds petrifying! happened to a friend of mine who burst his eardrum; all he could do was grab the dive line and follow that up.

It was more of a surprise, I had enough air with me and it happened on the shallow part of the dive so that wasn't a problem either. That's the part of freediving I'm hesitant about, not having enough gas with me 😅 Now there's a scary situation.

"Vertigo" is just dizziness. Acrophobia can lead to it, but it's not a fear of heights, as most people think.

I have never been close to experience anything like this, and I most likely never will, unfortunately. But watching this, I feel a primal attraction, a longing... but also a primal fear, for standing right at the edge of the abyss and letting go. It is so beautiful and peaceful, and yet so dangerous. Fantastic work! Thank you for showing us the depths!

My next door neighbor friend was into cave diving. As we became adults and moved away from each other, I’d see her rarely during hometown visits. But one year recently I hadn’t seen or heard from her for awhile. Her brother let me know she drowned during a cave diving trip. Either got stuck or lost and ran out of air. Her swim partner found her. Scary way to go out.

A few years ago, I randomly discovered freediving, after never thinking about it for a second in my life, and it has been one of those singular things I've wanted to do the most, out of everything I haven't attempted yet. Whenever it's hard to believe in this experience, I'll sometimes watch this video and it gives me the trust in our world, that there will always be extraordinary things to discover and do. So much of the human experience-desire, curiosity, adventure, discovery-is beautifully captured in just 3 1/2 minutes. Many thanks!

That was so beautiful that you can hold your breath for so long! I also loved seeing that beautiful clear waterline showing when it was showing from the top moving down halfway coming halfway out of the water, seeing it move closer to the bottom like we’re almost coming all the way out of the water but then seeing the waterline moving back up some! It looked like we were going all the way back underwater but except we were moving halfway back underwater which I loved a lot! I usually love seeing that beautiful waterline moving up and passing the top going all the way back underwater a lot though especially after coming halfway out of the water and/or all the way out of the water because that’s more popular to see! Good underwater breath hold by the way!❤️🐟🥰💧😅😍🦈💦🐳👍😘🙂🌊🐋😊🐠💐💕🐬👙

Oh my goodness, you have touched on something that I have struggled with my whole life -- that insane voice in my head that says: "Jump". When I walk over a bridge or along a cliff over the ocean, I ask my partner to hold my hand and not let go because I am afraid that I will jump. On the one hand, I recognize it as a fear of losing control of my life. On the other hand, one of my dreams is to fly like a bird in their three dimensional world. Not many people understand that "insane voice" but you got it.

apparently, the French call it "l'appel du vide" - the call of the void. Common enough to have a name then, be it in French. We are not alone - let's all meet on a bridge in Paris and try not to jump.

The underwater environment is magical, and the likeness to flying is awesome, and flying hang gliders is very similar with a different set of constraints, and normally speed, unless you are flying a helicopter, which is magical in its own right, like being a few feet off the ground, yet not going anywhere, but flying as if you were underwater.

Technically speaking "Acrophobia" is the intense fear of heights, "Vertigo" is the subjective feeling of spinning around a vertical axis which induces nausea and vomit, and "Dizziness" is a subjective sensation of unsteadiness or postural unstability but less severe than "vertigo" 😁🙏👍🤓

I have not watched your whole prime doctor yet, it is intriguing I want to see everything. To me a person who is suffering with a severe stutter that has come up through maybe MS or cancer or PLS or who knows and I really don’t care. At my age of 51 and almost hopefully 52, I am a cellist pianist vocalist, violinist piano player, but most important the best thing in my world in 51 years and almost 52 is a proud father of three daughters who are my greatest accomplishments, so, vertigo. Upper down doesn’t matter everything in life will leave you totally confused in your mind of what angle or bridge or level or degree or how are you stand or float what’s up and down and so forth, and so forth until you have children, and that, that is the most beautiful and challenging experience you could ever have. I wouldn’t trade anything money, nor food religion you name it in the world for what I call vertigo but complete joy, confusion, frustration, and in direction of that I got through my way and she having beautiful children. Frustration and all, that to me is vertigo that’s a complete understanding when somebody gets it off what misdirection is in life is when you try to guide your children. I’ve been down 400 feet in the water. I can hold my breath for nine minutes. I can swim amongst the whales and sharks squids. I can swim in temperatures in Safir minus degrees I’ve climbed hills and mountains, above what people think is unsafe I’ve driven on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. I flown on F-18s, I’ve camped out and in temperatures that were with windchill down to -57° and experience the desert sun to no end at 115°. I’m a chef, I’m a cellist I’m a violinist I’m an entertainer. Most of all, I’m a father, and there’s nothing more challenging than I have ever had in my 51 of years of life ever ever ever has been, I tried father for three beautiful daughters and then I still don’t have answers for no matter what they ask because I’m still wrong and you know what,? It’s OK because they still come back to me and ask again. That’s life so ask me about vertigo. Which way is up or down. Do you think you know do any of you know? I respect all of you even though I don’t know you. But if you’re a parent, you can do anything and everything in the world but when you’re a parent for one child boy girl, that’s going to be and should be, and will be God blessed the biggest challenge you’ll ever experience in your entire life ever! Thank you for this beautiful show. Sweet dreams.

Someday I want to give into my vertigo just like this but first I must quit smoking!! When I was way younger I could hold my breath up to 2 minutes. I thought how amazing it would be to breathe under water. My step-mother is a certified open water diver and so she arranged for the family to go down to our local pool and do a little training. It was magical to be able to breathe under water. 20 years ago we went to Cozumel and we were going to try an open water dive class there but my brother and I were just getting over the flu and so we never got to dive. We did some snorkeling which was awsome!! My father continued to go diving but I was soo bummed I never had the opportunity to try it again. Maybe some day the opportunity will happen again!!❤
