Verbs Like Gustar

This week's Spanish Quickie is a bit different. You'll still learn some vocab and grammar--it's just a little more theoretical than normal.
In order to understand why "me gusta" is so weird (it's how you say "I like"--not "gusto") -- you first have to understand how the dictionary works.
That might sound silly to you. But to be completely honest, I didn't know until very recently.
I wish somebody taught me this a long time ago. It woulda saved me tons of time, energy and embarassing moments.
But my pain, is your gain.
Let me know if you have any questions. This video took me longer than normal to make. I rewrote it three times!

It helps to think of "gustar" as the opposite of "disgustar," or the English "to disgust." I've found it easy to remember because of the negative prefix. You don't disgust a piece of moldy bread, but the bread disgusts you, so you are disgusted by it. Basically all gustar is.

@@elspanishdude I found this video very helpful, but I have a question: When using the verb gustar, why does the subject (the thing that is pleasing) go after the conjugated form of gustar and not before? For example, why does "comer" go after "gusta" in "Me gusta comer" if "comer" is the subject that is pleasing? Why isn't it "Comer me gusta."? Again, thanks for these videos!

Gringo Español Correct. Acceleration works the same way. As long as they object is moving back toward a previously occupied position on the same vector path, both the velocity and the acceleration would be negative, and the speed would be positive as you can't have a negative speed. That would be like having a negative distance. Thanks for all of the great videos!

Thanks a million for these videos. They are helping me a lot in learning Spanish. This may not mean much for this video, but coming from an engineering background and to share some physics knowledge with you guys, the difference between Velocity and Speed is Velocity is a "vector quantity" meaning it has both magnitude and direction while Speed only has Magnitude. So while they might have the same units (m/sec for example) when Velocity of an object = 100 m/sec it mean velocity has a magnitude of 100 in a particular direction (whatever that direction is) but when Speed of and object = 100 m/sec it means the speed has a magnitude of 100 and but does not take into account the direction. That's probably why Momentum = mass x velocity (and not mass x speed) because moving objects have momentum, but however only have it in the particular direction they are moving in.... i think lol.. But again, keep up the good work and thanks again for the help. Saludos desde Trinidad y Tobago!!

The correct translation would be "la velocidad del coche", being "del" a contraction from "de + el".

Oh, and speed versus velocity? Speed is a "scalar" - you just need a single number to define it - the number of miles (eg) you travel in some time (an hour), for example. Velocity is a vctor - you need two numbers to define it - a speed (mph) and a direction (North). So - consider 2 cars. One driving 10mph North and the other 10 mph South. Both have the same speed (10 mph) but they have differewnt velocities as their directions are different. Just in case anyone cares.

Jordan, do you have a "List" of verbs like Gustar? I assumed your Worksheet would include a "list of verbs like Gustar".

Thanks for this! This is why it's important to learn the "Super Literal Translation". This is the same format as Russian and so to me it makes immediate sense now. However, now I know why I kept confusing my friends with, "Te gustas?" jajaja I was still trying to conjugate gustar like a regular -AR verb :)

If we take physics into account then "speed" means "velocity" (as the formula for both of them is distance/time) and "velocity" means "rapidez" But of course that usually doesn't matter

+carolina potterhead thanks. i was wondering how that worked. seems like it would cause a bunch of issues if both speed and velocity had the same word. =)

Hi Jordan, I love you videos. Quick question: how can I know where to put the extra information about what is 'pleasing', 'boring', 'interesting', that is, before or after the pronoun and conjugated verb? E.g. why is it: 'La clase' me aburre but Me encanta 'la pizza' or No me gustan 'las serpientes'?

Kane Blackburn Awesome question. I'm not 100% on this, so anybody who knows better, please add your opinion. They are all correct. I also just confirmed with a couple Mexicans sitting in the same room I'm in. So "La clase me aburre" and "Me aburre la clase" are both correct and it's just a style thing.Generally, words like gustar have the objects (direct or indirect) after the verb. So "Me gusta la pizza". I know aburrir is a word like gustar, but when given the choice of the two sentences, both Mexicans I'm currently with chose "La clase me aburre" as sounding better. But again, both are correct. So it's really just a matter of how it sounds to you. Your style of talking. I don't recall if I used the words differently (different order) in this video. If I did, I did it without thinking. One time I might say "Me aburre la clase" another time I might say "La clase me aburre". But other than just style, the emphasis in both those sentences is a little different. In the first, my feeling of boredom is more in focus. In the second sentence, the class is more in focus. Feel that?

I´m a native spanish speaker. Grammatically, the correct form is to say: La clase me aburre, La pizza me encanta. First we have to put the article, afer the noun and finally the verb. But, in the every day speaking, people use both forms,

Grammatically both ways are perfectly correct. The subjet (what bores you, what pleases you, what interests you...) can be place before or after the verb. La clase me aburre/me aburre la clase; La pizza me encanta/me encanta la pizza; No me gustan las serpientes/Las serpientes no me gustan. Use whichever you prefer.
