@@bill_lumbergh oh Venus fly traps are interesting in and of themselves, don’t get me wrong. What I mean is that only David Attenborough can talk about literally anything, whether it’s about plants, seeds, rocks, or trees, and still grab my attention every time. Other narrators end up making me bored of the subject within 5 mins, cause they sound like they’re about to fall asleep.

Earlier this week I tried to feed my flytrap and the trap never gave the final squeeze (as the fly had been chilled for easier management)... Direct Thanks to Sir David Attenborough, The Green Planet, and KZreads uncanny algorithm as I now know why!

There are ways to get them to close around a dead insect, fish food, etc. You would tap or rub the trap to get it to close fully and digest the food.

If you can only feed it dead insects I would slide a little tooth pick in the trap once it’s closed on the insect and wiggle it around to get it to fully squeeze. That’s what I used to do
@themarksmann

@@TheJellyfish800 A great idea. Most of the time my kids catch a fly, I put it in the refrigerator a while, and afterwards it moves slow so I can use tweezers to place it in the trap and it won't buzz off, but it will walk/move enough to trigger the trap. I'll have to use a tooth pick on any that don't survive (the last one I put in the freezer for quicker results but didn't take it out soon enough!) Thanks for the advice!

This is fascinating stuff. Fly traps are a bit like Chinese finger cuffs, where the more you try to escape, the more locked in you get. If a hapless bug gets trapped in a flytrap, but lays perfectly still and waits, it could slink out alive. If it struggles (which it usually will) and continues to trip the sensors, it gets the final lockdown.

The ending is actually quite a bit of a tease as a plant that eats insects also grows plants(flowers) to attract pollenating insects...? Turns out it grows it's plants(flowers) as far away as possible from it's traps to avoid this problem. Just fascinating.

All carnivorous plants flower. It has evolved multiple separate times in flowering plants as a response of environmental pressure - in bogs and marshes, which pretty much all carnivorous plants hail from, soil contains extremely poor levels of nitrogen. Nitrogen is an extremely important nutrient in all living things. You can’t live without nitrogen. It’s a particularly important nutrient for plants. As a result, they ‘figured out’ that one of the best ways to secure nitrogen in these deficient soils was to feed on the roaming insects that are heaped with nitrogen. Due to being angiosperms, they all need to flower; they grew from a flower’s seed, they need to seed, it’s their only life goal.

I remember talking to a sound designer who used to work in Bristol where these Nature Documentaries are edited. I hadn’t really thought about the incredible amount of Foley (reproduced sounds for plants and animals) that are in these films. He said obviously when you have a group of lions eating a wildebeest on the plains of Africa you don’t have a guy with a boom mic standing next to them, so they have to recreate all of the sound from scratch with Foley artists. Nature Documentaries are as heavy with sound design as a Star Wars film.

Sir David you are probably one of the most down to earth intelligent and wise man ever lived.
It is something to see the environment they are from. In the outer coastal plain of the Carolinas, there are areas of mineral deficient quarts/silica soil where fires often would burn and flat areas of uplands where rain accumulates upon a harder substrate...a sunny bog or seep wherein minimal nutrients are brought in by flowing water...most of the water is from the rain itself. Stunted cypress trees and shortened pond pines line these acidic conditions and in the ground layer exposed to enough sun you will find sundews, spaghnum mosses (which decay slowly and make it more acidic), pitcher plants, bladderworts, butterworts and in rare cases...the venus flytrap. Their flowers, to me, are beautiful and so unique popping up above the yellow eyed grasses, bog sedges, rushes and pipeworts. A constant buzz of flies, beetles, moths, skippers, butterflies and bees abound. Where there is so little bounty of minerals from the deep earth, we still find life in the land of fire and rain.
@pansepot1490
2 жыл бұрын
I agree: it’s something to see the environment such unusual plants are from. There’s a botanist on KZread who posts videos about his field trips to see plants in their own habitat. I don’t think it was the Carolinas but definitely he visited an area very similar to your description where carnivore plants thrive. The channel is “crime pays but botany doesn’t”. PS Perhaps you meant see the environment in person: that would be the top but for people who are stuck at home like me vlogs from the field are a much appreciated substitute.

I wonder what evolution could have in store for a plant that can retain such information, if only briefly.
