Timelapse is just a camera that takes a photo every set period of time. They’re cut together and it makes it look sped up. The sounds are fake btw.

@@bimfred That's what I'm saying. Before this there was no choice but to return to the plant, hour after hour and take note of the difference in growth. Only now with technology do hours become minutes, minutes into seconds and we can watch these plants move as if they were animals. I'm sure many people studied this plant before and I wish all who had could see it grow and move like we can now.

David Attenborough can literally make watching grass grow interesting and educational.

[1] technically water lily is not a grass [2] grass, is WAY MORE facinating. grass contains glass (silicates), grass caused the extinction of horses in North America due to glass in grass wearing their teetch down too fast. Yet 5 million years later the same greed of we humans desiring another kind of grass (Sugar cane), slave trade and colonizers brought horses back to North America.

@@paolovallejo5500 my dude... you can google and verify "Silicate in gass", but you can't google "Sugar cane is a type of grass"? Also the real BS in my writting was the "horse extinction" part. "Mustication", i.e. the wearing down of teeth due to silicate in grass caused many extinctions, but not to the NA horses. NA horses had evolved to deal with that already.

@@babylebron6119 first you need some sound to help keep interest and the actual sound would be unusable. Second most of this was filmed in a studio under controlled conditions, lightning and with a fake backdrop. It’s just how these programs are made to give interest to the audience.

Fascinating...yet remarkably eerie to watch a PLANT do all that. David Attenborough is a genius when it comes narration.

This video is absolute perfection. The narration, the music, the imagery. Can't believe I'm coming back every month watching water lilies conquer a lake but here we are.

Of all the disturbing and terrifying things out in nature, I never thought I'd get so freaked out by a lilypad. It is truly a horrifying plant.

When I've been lost in thought about what kind of alien species might exist out there in the universe, I've found myself wondering if there might be species out there that we might completely miss or misunderstand because they either live far faster, or far slower than we do - throwing off our intuitions. In a way, plants are kind of like this. Time lapses show them in a totally different light. In real time, they might as well be inanimate objects to us. But time lapses show almost animalistic qualities at times

@@therealostrich836 I try to be careful with expanding my definitions so far that they lose a large part of their utility, and I'd say that referring to the entire universe as being "alive" is doing that. Even if we are living on the back of a neuron in a god's brain, it's alive in a way that is sufficiently different to deserve a different word

Amazing how plants can evolve to dominate their environment so proactively. Plants often seem so helpless and passive when compared to animals, but it’s fascinating to see a plant shaping the environment around it so aggressively

Underwater plants: Oh boy, I can't wait to thrive and grow in this pond with all of this tasty light! Water lily: *N O*

I was once told that plants can be viewed a bit like animals all trying to get at a bowl of food. They kick and punch and wrestle each other to get to the bowl (Which in the case of plants is sunlight), but it happens so slowly that you don't really notice it while walking through the forest. Vines climbing up tree trunks. Saplings trying to grow in the shade. Different leaf sizes and shapes meant for optimal capture of whatever rays make it to them. It's a slow and perpetual war with seasonal victories and losses.

I can’t believe you just totally misunderstood the reason they add in the sound effects. As for the motion, I’m having trouble where you found that. Wow, that beauty is actually a beast in disguise. In the local zoo as a youngster I was impressed by it's beauty in the pond in the tropical greenhouse. It's flowering was a yearly event. Never did I suspect it's monstruos behavior.

I saw this plant recently in one botanical garden and was so astonished to see how beautiful, scary, complex and huge it is. Highly recommend seeing it in person.

Beautiful transformation, I can’t help but rewind the part where the lily unravels.

That's a very cruel plant, but I can't help to feel mesmerized by how it eliminates anything else just for them to exist.

On the one hand.. sure sucks for the other plants. On the other hand, it manages to cool the water temperature and offer safety to fish from bird predators. It's really interesting, the balance of things

Incredible documentaries with the state of the art filming equipment and a fantastic group of highly talented and creative people to show us the life that goes on all around us and how intertwined we are.

Who could have thought that waterlilies would make for such a great war movie. Also amazed at the sheer skill of the producers and camerapersons.

BBC has always done a fantastic job at making even the most simple of life forms look and sound dramatic.

I really love how Attenborough has offered an alternative perspective through this narrative, usually lillies are well liked. But this has presented them in an interesting and twisted way.

I think it’s important to note that although here the plant itself is framed to be ‘evil’ or ‘horrifying’, in reality, the only way it can destroy so many other species is when it is removed from its natural environment and entered into a different ecosystem; much like the cane toads in Australia.

But why is there still such a variety of species and races and types? Because until now man has never had such unwanted power over life and the future! "Accidentally", bringing in harmful plants, rodents, insects or parasites, not to mention invisible dangers such as bacteria, germs and viruses! Something like that only happened to beginners and dilettantes in earlier centuries, today only to routine blind or Saboteurs and Attackers!

@@zacharykenniston748 they don't feel pain because they don't have nervous systems, but they do respond to distress which is what i think you're referring to. they release chemicals that alert other plants to predators in the area and stuff like that.

So beautiful from above but terrifying from below.

I felt like I was watching a Sci Fi movie seeing this come to life moving around. Interesting waterlily but creepy. Nice documentary of this unique water lily.

I am currently working painting a botanical jungle mural and this shows timing couldn’t be better. Totally inspirational! I just spent two hours on water lilies. I’m the lucky owner of a corpse flower (not the kind featured - titan arum) and I’m inspired to include it too! So glad to see this being released and for the incredible filming that puts plants on a human timeline.

"still have"? This show just came out a couple weeks ago on TV. It's called Green Earth and it's tangentially connected to a whole BBC series like Planet Earth 1, Planet Earth 2, Blue Planet 1, Blue Planet 2, and now Green Planet. They're all on TV and they've been working on this series of documentaries since the 00s and they're still making fresh ones like this.

Cinematography pure Bliss

The videography that the BBC filmmakers are able to accomplish is absolutely breathtaking and awe inspiring. I genuinely don't understand how they get these shots. I heard they will post a cameraman for weeks or months just to get a single shot of whatever they are trying to capture. That level of determination and passion is genuinely impressive.
