For those wondering about the noise, I realized after that the footage was noisy in the screen capture for the shade of grey Vegas used to late, and the chroma key also wasn't totally clean but for what this video is I am fine with this.

Yes, I was the greatest user that Vegas had and it got me a TV contract, but once it got brought by( Magix) it been buggy. However, I used it on a Mac with bootcamp. It was so smooth just like what DaVinci is today. Never have I ever thought about crashing just work flow techniques... as a matter of fact as DaVinci was developing it was adding Vegas like features and surpass them.

I use both of them. I started with Sony Vegas way back when (around 2012) and have done many videos with it. Some of them were very complex. I just know how it works. That said, there are some great features in Resolve. Basically, I use Resolve mostly for color grading and speciality purposes. But I like the Vegas timeline editing better because I know it.

Thanks for this! For sure editing is faster in Vegas, by a mile! But, once you get your ways around Resolve, as with anything else, it does become easier and faster. Vegas is very intuitive, Resolve is very powerful. For the most part, Vegas takes you easier there, but Resolve will take you further. Vegas does have a clear workflow, Resolve is like a thing of itself - basically each feature requires a different way to learn it. Vegas could definitely use some of Resolve stability and GPU integration, Resolve could definitely become more straightforward. Could these combine somehow? ;) ResolVega editor! :)

Thanks for the comparsion. I like to hear more about these differences: multicam editing (Vegas slows down when you have many videotracks with fx, even when only the topmost is visible..), timeline playback performance (Vegas drop frames at every hard cut because of buffering or something. How smooth is this in Resolve?), what about 4k editing, does it need proxy? - Editline scrubbing speed with native h264 1080 files, rendering h264 or h265 at 20mbps quality comparsion, (i use frameserver +ripbot for quality output)... How is preview window drawing? I Vegas with my 50p footage and 50Hz monitor i cannot get perfectly smooth motion, often see screen tearing, stuttering, etc. Edius was perfect in this regard. Tracking object+follow that with a text..... You mean, real world usage :) I use Vegas, but look for another NLE, because with my i7 16GB and 1660Ti card i feel i drive my sportcar in a forest :(

Hmmm, I agree with many (most) of you comparisons, but not the audio FX discussion. First, I believe in Resolve's Edit tab, if you click on an audio track, the Inspector does have basic audio tools available. And re FX, I think if you open Resolve's Effects Library, any audio FX can be dropped on the timeline audio and adjusted in the Inspector. From my experience, it's actually pretty easy. I've worked a fair amount with both apps, and for audio FX, I actually think Resolve is more straight forward. Details aside, interesting video. (As an aside, my understanding is Vegas started out as primarily an audio editing app.)

To open an existing project in Resolve, click on the icon that looks like a house (lower right). That will open the project manager. As for those little Vegas files, those are of course just storing metadata on the project. Resolve does the same thing but in its proprietary database (stored in Program Data I think) and really in a way is cleaner than Vegas' approach, though admittedly less visible. I totally agree with your discussion of zooming the timeline. Vegas wins for sure. Likewise with having overlapping clips automatically crossfade (though that has to be enabled in Vegas). One thing not mentioned - in Vegas, but not Resolve, you can open multiple instances of the app -- work one project while another is rendering, etc.

You can actually have a Vegas project of a short bit of your main video that needs heaps of editing. Save it. Then have your main video open and drag the Vegas file into your project. It will bring in the small section that is actually a Vegas project itself. You can then leave both instances of Vegas open. Edit the small section and it will change in the timeline of your main project. If I am making a big video with 5 or more sections, I make the sections separately then fresh those Vegas files into my main project

You seem to have the same sensibilities as me when it comes to the Vegas interface. I've grown with it, so I'm more familiar with the flow. The only thing that bugs me is editing audio in Vegas. Moving around events is easy. Applying effects which change the waveform and change the size of an event doesn't work. When applying audio effects, the waveform looks the same and the size of the even does not change. When adding reverb, the event will cut off at its original size. I's like the audio editing to work like Audacity. Another thing that bugs me when editing audio in Vegas is when speeding up or slowing down video. I'd like the practice of syncing audio to the sped / slowed video to be easier. Beyond the 4X accordion-crunch to events, it's a lot of guess work and manual math. You can speed footage up 40,000 times. It's really difficult to use though. If you know of a tip or maybe a later version has fixed this (I use 14), let me know. One thing that always confuses me in Vegas when I do it is masking video events and getting that mask to apply to child events. I've done it, but it is not intuitive. Does Davinci make this easier? 32:43 Those generated project files could be incorporated into the main project file itself, but then it makes that project file larger. It could be huge if you have a lot of media that generates it. They are written with the same media file that uses them inside the folder that media is. You can better organize your project media files into folders to your liking. Porting a large project size is more cumbersome when working with multiple team members or when archiving. Since those assistive files can be generated on the fly, it relieves these problems. Davinci sounds like a buggy work-in-progress. I believe that is why they are offering it for free. The advanced neural engine seems to be the feature for which they're charging. It took a bit for Vegas to become stable. I suspect Davinci will move to an everybody pays model when they smooth out things. As for now, it's as if they're using the community as debuggers.

Compare to Vegas, Resolve is total crap. It would take one at least 3 times longer to make the same video in DR than it takes them in Vegas. When it comes to color correction, than Vegas 19 now is not worse than DR. At least in Vegas, one can see in the Vectroscope very clearly when they oversaturate image or not. Resolve's Vectroscope is just crap. And if one has 30 clips and needs to crossfade them, in DR it's a nightmare, because, of course you don't know the time when and how long that crossfade has to be, you want to see it on in your video, and Vegas is just perfect for that. The only shame is that it's not aval. on Linux. And that's the only reason to consider DR over Vegas. Love your video, thanks a lot.

To be fair to Resolve and other NLES for that matter, the playhead stopping when you do something midway is actually a good thing, given that it has less chances of catching your NLE by surprise while you're playing 4k+ footage that is loaded with FX, thus, less likelihood to crash. In VEGAS, you have to *remember* to pause. That being said, it's also a good thing, because it imitates the behavior of DAWS, which is something musicians who edit their own videos will feel at home with. Its a trade off. I'm a VEGAS user, but I certainly wish there was a way to disable the playhead from behaving like that.

You don't like the shortcuts, change them! It's as simple as that. Don't know if you can choose to set DR to use Vegas specific keyboard shortcuts, but you can change it to use shortcuts of other NLEs.

Dragging a webcam image and positioning it anywhere on the screen is easy in Streamlabs. Don't know why you'd want to do this in video editing. I've been using Shotcut lately. I almost got Vegas pro for cad $400 last Christmas but opted for Komplete 12 Ultimate for the same price. Resolve crashes my i5 6 core 3kmz pc. Might have something to do with my 16Ram though 🙄 I'm surprised that the audio wave form isn't increased when the track is normalized like in Audacity. Shot does a crossfade automatically and Shotcut is open source.

I don't hide them because I want to delete them with the media when I'm finished with it, and deleting them can sometimes fix corrupted vegas projects. There probably is a way to do hide them but then those cache files will build up on the machine. I wonder if there is a way to link them to the media file? That would be nifty.

I actually have a second computer that does the screen recording to take the load of my main machine. I've worked with both vegas and resolve on much weaker machines before and resolve crashes a little less than vegas. I don't notice anything super different other than vegas does not like it if you move a playback cursor back to where you just trimmed an event that is no longer there. If I avoid this then I rarely crash, even on weaker machines, and when I don't avoid it I'd say there is about a 2% chance of a crash.

But if you get paid good money to do what you do then invest back into your business and get industry-standard program bro. Nothing is wrong with the Vinci but if you got money there's better programs. And when you mix Vegas with some industry-standard programs like set fire red giant universe or ignite......your doing a whole lot better than what you can do with the free program

This sounds like you have weird export settings or are doing heavy fx. Resolve and Vegas render about the same for me. A 5 min video like this one would only take a minute or two to render. @@MMPHOTOANDVIDEO It looks like the problem lies with your specs itself, it's just not powerful enough to render more quickly. I edit with Intel Core i5 6500 + AMD RX 560 machine, rendering a 100 second 4K @ 24 fps video would usually take around 10 minutes. With heavy effects applied and multiple layers, it can take up to 90 minutes. If you're using VEGAS Pro 15 or later, try rendering in MAGIX AVC with an NVENC preset, it uses GPU acceleration to speed up rendering.

You didn't mention anything about rendering. Obviously because Vegas is a complete joke compared to Resolve rendering speed and codecs. Vegas 18 is even worse than 17 was. Most people use video plugins. Good luck if you use vegas. Plugins usually have to be made proprietary for Vegas. In Resolve, the OFX just work, except for some of Red Giant plugs because of Red Giant, not Resolve which is another story. Davinci Resolve is FREE. Most you tubers don't need the studio version for basic stuff.

Someone else brought up a similar issue I addressed in their comment, but in short, Vegas is actually faster for me than Resolve is many instances, it usually pretty close and both are very quick so it didn't stick out to me as a major difference. However, I am running Vegas 18 which was massively faster than 15 which resolve beat without an issue. Resolve was less complex to set up for sure making it easier for someone who is new to get the optimal render settings, while vegas has a massive list of codecs and then inside each option is a huge list of presets, so I think Resolve in general provides an initial simpler experience but I still prefer vegas for rendering, cause once you got your preset set up it goes very fast. Different experiences for different machines and setups of course. I haven't updated to the latest resolve, I'm one version off, so maybe the new one is way faster.
